As you can probably tell, my art style is very detailed. But, I want to make traditionally animated TV shows. So I tried making some little animation-friendly WOF tribe headshots. This is the first time I've tried something like this, and the other tribes I'm still working on, but let me know what you think or things you think I could improve on.
Rainwing wings are actually similar to hummingbird wings, making Rainwings the most agile fliers out of the different tribes
Nightwings scale coloring has to do with the night sky they were born under, not genetics, the wing pattern of stars followed this rule as well until the move to the volcano and then it became genetic. Nightwings will however begin to develop light silver scale spots and brighter wing stars the longer they spend time out in moonlight, though it will never be as bright as what it could have been
Nightwing find the bright star patterns to be incredibly attractive traits, and Morrowseer, Deathbringer, and Stonemover (pre statue) we considered incredibly attractive until Moonwatcher and Foeslayer were introduced
Though all dragons continue growing as they age the rate depends on the tribe, Seawings grow the quickest by a far margin followed by Nightwings, Skywings actually grow at the slowest rate followed by Rainwings though this is less noticeable as Rainwings are considerably smaller than Skywings
While Seawings are the best swimmers followed by Mudwings, Icewings are actually the third best swimmers of any tribe as a large part of their diet is located in the artic waters
The membrane of the wings are the most fragile part of any dragon tribe but Seawings and Silkwings have the toughest membrane of any tribe
Sandwings, Rainwings, and Leafwings while they don't technically have the strongest wing membrane they do have specifically tear resistant membranes
Hivewings have poor night vision especially when compared to other tribes; the exception is Cricket because that is her unique Hivewing ability, she just has no clue because of her poor eye sight and the fact she doesn't really know what is and isn't normal for most Hivewings
Cricket and Blue are just ADHD and autism and thats why they meld together so well
All of the dragonets of destiny have stunted growth or other issues due to not getting their environmental needs growing up
I feel like queen Wasp was just some throwaway character, so that’s why I’m telling you about my au 🥹. After Wasp became connected with the BOE (Breath of Evil) It slowly started to change her, her eyes and under scales as well as any easy-to-flush out scales started to turn this pale green, her dark eyes glinting with an EVIL emerald glow to show how the BOE changed her. It also came with abilities with the help of Clearsight’s magical book.
(also part of my au that Clearsight learned some types of magic by Darkstalker, we’ll get to that later in another post maybe)🤔
Wasp’s magic is green, poisonous, and parasitic, able to cause painful blows if touched— kind of like raining venom— her claws are more venomous than any Hivewing in the kingdom and she is an experienced fighter even when she’s so old. She’s not an elder, but an ancient (dragons who have succeeded to pass their ages and continue to grow until their new age of death— which is pretty long— so she’s been here for some generations)
She has this huge battle against the Leafwings and the Silkwings after the decided to band together to defeat Wasp. She had made the librarian (one who could use Clearsight’s magical book only) to create this battle to the death dome and it would only dissipate until one of the others died. She died when Sundew shoved her off balance and out into the magical barrier, nothing but magical particles gone into the air. And that’s how she died in my au, because… why are we allowing, a lying war criminal who almost committed a wipe out genocide, sit in flamesilk caverns with her sisters? But yeah
This is where I must implore you to click on the image for better quality please. I actually worked so damn hard on this one.
Oh boy this piece though. Last digital anything I did, and for good reason. I did this with a freaking track pad on my laptop in college. I'll spare the majority of you the rant and cut here though.
The original sketch for this piece is a full double page spread in a big sketchbook that I had to scan in on a scanner at the library cause I couldn't get a good flat photo of it on my phone to then use for this digital whatever you want to call it.
I don't know what possessed me to draw it. I don't know what possessed me to color it. And this was the second version of color I did. If I feel like it later maybe I'll hunt down the other version. I would add the initial pencil drawing here too but the scanned file it too damn big for tumblr, apparently. And I don't know how to/am to lazy at the moment to try and figure out how to down size it.
Also, being the digital art noob that I was and still am, I made this canvas way too big. I think this version was a bit smaller, but I know the first one was huge, cause I wanted the little details. I had issues with getting it to load/upload. (I was on deviant art at the time. It did not like the size of that image either.)
But yea. I made this thing.
In hindsight, I probably wouldn't have made Swordtail's wings have any transparency, but I was playing with stuff digital could do. I would also change the way he's carrying Blue, but I was also so proud of how Blue's head and neck came out that I think I didn't care enough to fix that in the sketch either.
Like seriously if you look at nothing else just look at Blue's neck. That's all I care about. /joking
On to more Wings of Fire related rants. In writing up this post and looking at the piece again I was struck with the realization that young metamorphosed silkwings are a little like sophomores/juniors in high school that just got their driver's license.
I know they don't usually carry each other around and that Swordtail is hopped up on some strength improving thing in this scene (if I remember right), but it was an amusing thought to me so I thought I'd share it.
Just, 'Oh you can't drive fly yet? Don't worry, by buddy just metamorphosed last week, she can take us.'
Cut to a young silkwing with three or four other's comedically and cartoonishly piled on their back in a true affront to physics and biology.
