ACTUAL FACTUAL PEOPLE WHO SPEAK KOREAN PLS FACT CHECK THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW CORRECT THIS IS!!!!!
HI EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like singing, kpop and singing kpop, but singing Korean out loud is awkward, because I have to explain to my parents that I am not secretly fluent in korean, I can just sing the lyrics because I've listened to the song a bunch. My sister will also accuse me of being a Koreaboo, but I'm not, it's just the because I like kpop and singing and linguistics and I have adhd. oof yeah I just exposed myself, but I don't need to worry, because yall won't tell anyone, and yall already knew that.
Because of this, I have a habit of making "english versions" for lines of songs that I know the English translation to and can say the Korean for. I have done it for Yuna's lines in the second verse of Icy, the chorus of lemonade by NCT 127, the chorus of Hype Boy by Newjeans and almost total of Vivid by Jeon Heejin.
I also do it because sometimes the official eng ver. doesn't make sense compared to the translation, which annoys me. (I kinda want to post on X whether multilingual idols feel similarly)
Today I present to you an english version of the second line of the chorus of wolf. The original is "난 단순한 게 좋아 내 속에 숨어있던 것이 지금 눈 떴어" and it translates to "I like simple things, the hidden thing inside my has opened my eyes." It doesn't make sense to me, and sounds clunky. I thought of the first part at work while I was hanging up clothes and the second part suddenly came to me while eating dinner last night. At work, I was thinking of this sick simon says x monster exo x getting closer (breathless) x say my name ateez mashup and also thinking of wolf for some reason, when I started repeating the 난 단순한 게 좋아 part a bunch, when I thought of the line "I've forfeited simple things" I immediatly got really happy and excited, because it fits the amount of syllables that are in the original, which are 7, and it makes more sense with the second part of the line the actual translation, which I got happy.
I was saying the line I made and the actual line throughout yesterday, generally enjoying the great line I made and the fact it makes sense, and I was thinking during dinner, which usually yields creative results if focused properly, and I was about to go put my plate in the sink because I was finished with my food, and I was singing the first line when the second line, "now that the hidden thing inside me is rearing its head!" popped into my head fully formed, just like that! I was surprised, because the gist of it is the same as the translation, and I didn't have to change any of the words to fit the syllables of the original, when I'd usually have to think alot to fix it!!!
One thing I only realized after translating it is that the syntax is weird, but I had to make it like that to fit the way the lyrics is like. If you were hear my sentence in the wild in my corner of English, it would be "now that the hidden thing inside me is rearing its head, I'm forfeiting simple things," but "난 단순한 게 좋아" is the part about simple things and the second part is "the hidden thing inside me is awake/aware." This doesn't make sense because the two lines are two different ideas and they are put right next to each other but there aren't conjunctions to show how they are related to each other. There might not be because there might not have been enough syllables in the demo version to put one in and the lyric writers decided it would be fine without it, BUT IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE ANY FREAKING SENSE AREJNAVEARSBJHAJPEIRPIN ugh sigh.
Anyway, I really like what I've made, and am pretty proud of myself for doing it super quickly, so I decided to share it here, because that's this website is for. I put the Korean translation of it up top, to show how similar it is to the original, except I'm not sure if yall are able to do it, so I'll just explain.
The original is "난 단순한 게 좋아 내 속에 숨어있던 것이 지금 눈 떴어" and I created "I've forfeited simple things now that the hidden thing inside me is rearing its head" and the translation of it is, "내 안에 숨겨진 것이 고개를 들고 있으니 이제 나는 간단한 것들을 포기했습니다." the first thing I can see is
