wordpress gutenberg editing rant

after spending absolute ages last year customizing my wordpress site by hacking into the normally-inaccessible customizer and messing with theme.json files, i discovered a few months ago that what i need is a child theme. looking up how to do that, ive now discovered that the next version of wordpress is just. straight up going to have custom css fields natively in its editor. 😭 all that work has to be re-copied into the individual block settings now.

it still is absolutely baffling to me they released the gutenberg site editor without custom css or custom font options. im still gonna need to use a child theme and RE-re-copy my settings into it in order to have my preferred font in there.

i barely understand wp's codebase/terms to begin with and have had to claw and fight my way to my current level of understanding, bc when i started updating my site to gutenberg i didn't even know how to google the problems i was having, or else i would have started with a child theme and avoided some headaches.

feeling way less motivated to start working on that child theme rn but i suppose i should start so i can have a better understanding by the time 6.2 releases.

Oh gosh can I rant for a bit?

Wordpress is messing things up for my blog.

So I was on Business theme, but I thought I wasn’t getting my money’s worth, so I downgraded. Low and behold, alot of my posts were deleted. I contact support, they restore it but take down my recent new posts. 

Don’t go on my blog. Yes, I’m proud of it and am getting good traffic for a new blog- but it’s a mess in construction atm.

Sometime I realize I treat a section of the WordPress dashboard like a fridge. If I keep looking in the fridge eventually the food I want will magically appear. If I keep looking at this theme section eventually the functionality I desperately want right now will appear right, right?

I can’t figure out how to get around this thing. Blargh. One section of three latest posts. Then below that 6 latest posts, but the first three posts of the second section are the same as the featured three so basically duplicate posts.

I can’t figure out how to offset the main section to not show the three latest posts in its area (since the latest are already above anyway).

Offset exists as a part of the WP loop but when I tried to edit the loop the whole layout got changed... for some... reason...

Then trying through the functions file but it offset from the three posts area and the second area so I just got the same duplication end result anyway.

You’d think they’d each have a separate loop. Or hm...  home page template using block carousel and block posts. But the only loop I can find is in the home template, so maybe I guess they are both using the same loop that’s then edited by the options in the theme settings.

But no damn offset option.

This also leads me to not know if it’s doable without major hassle or a total reworking of one part of the theme or if I’m just not knowledgeable enough and missing something. :/

Wordpress Woes and Job Prospects

Having a rare moment where I got to talk about the going-ons of my life.

And jeez am I super annoyed with this Wordpress site I'm working on.

I decided to work on my website again, and took all day to find a good gallery plugin for my Wordpress website that doesn't confuse me the heck and back, or just outright doesn't work.

But hey, going to look at the bright side of this! The final main piece of my base website is complete. Next up, I've got aesthetic graphics to make the place look a lot more interesting and inviting.

Tomorrow I got a job interview over at Keller Williams Real Estate for a regional admin assistant position. I feel like I have a good chance at this, I've really learned how to present myself more confidently in front of people the past year.

I have come to the conclusion that posting to Tumblr, even with my crappy HTML skills, is far easier and far less annoying than posting to my real-life Wordpress blog.

Seriously, fuck Wordpress - WTF is it with its unnecessary "self-correction" and the removal of every paragraph and line break tag I try to put in the code? Wordpress randomly removing paragraph tags and line breaks even after I've saved it all is really annoying, because then the layout of my blog post is all wrong every time I try to post or re-post or update the bloody thing >:(
