“Hey, I’ve been turned into a penguin. Can I go home?”
“You’re excused.”
Instead of a giant trampoline, it’s magical cylinder.
“For the last time, we did not order a Magic Cylinder!”
“You know pal, you could have told me that before I set it up.”
#would baby kaiba have blue eyes white dragon plushies?

She Changed Comics: Colleen Doran
Happy Women’s History Month! All through March, we’ll be celebrating women who changed free expression in comics. Check back here every day for biographical snippets on female creators who have pushed the boundaries of the format and/or seen their work challenged or banned.
Colleen Doran started out as an exceptionally precocious artist, winning a Disney art contest at the age of five in the late 1960s. At that time she had every intention of eventually becoming an animator, but also felt pulled to comics. At 12 years old, a lengthy bout with pneumonia unexpectedly cemented her career track in two ways: a friend of her father’s gifted her a huge box of comics to read while bedridden, and she also had lots of time to write and draw her own creations. It was at that early juncture that she began work on her long-running independent series A Distant Soil, which has since become a touchstone in self-published comics.
At 15 Doran attended her first science fiction convention. Impressed by the fanart she saw there the first day, she returned with her own work the following day and sold out. By the time she went to college, she was already working fulltime as an artist and A Distant Soil was being published by WaRP Graphics. After the publisher attempted to claim full copyright on her work, however, Doran left WaRP and started the series over again at Starblaze Graphics, an imprint of the Donning Company.
After Donning in turn went out of business, Doran worked for a time on major properties including Amazing Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, The Sandman, and Legion of Superheroes. A Marvel adventure comic she illustrated in 1986, Swords of the Swashbucklers #9, was one of the books seized in the police raid of Friendly Frank’s comic shop which led to the establishment of CBLDF. The issue was reportedly targeted due to lesbian themes, but ultimately was dropped from the case before store manager Michael Correa was prosecuted and convicted for display of obscene materials.
Having been burned in her previous attempts to find a publisher for A Distant Soil, in 1991 Doran decided to take on the job herself. Through her own company Aria Press she re-released the issues that had been published by now-defunct Donning, then continued the story with new material. In 1995 the series was picked up by Image Comics, which still publishes it to this day.
Heavily influenced by manga, A Distant Soil was among the first U.S. comics to feature openly LGBT characters. In a 1995 interview in Comics Buyer’s Guide, Doran said she saw no reason not to include fully rounded characters of all orientations:
I thought I was pretty obvious. Rieken and D'mer are lovers and bisexual…. I do plan to explore gay rights concerns at greater length in the future. Gay rights are human rights and I don’t care if people think I’m a lesbian. Just shows how homophobic they are. Like straight people can’t support gay rights! That’s like saying men can’t be feminists! Really stupid.
Doran’s recent portfolio is as diverse as ever. In 2012 she illustrated the multi-generational Irish American family saga Gone to Amerikay, written by Derek McCulloch. Last year, it was Stan Lee’s memoir Amazing Fantastic Incredible, and her next major project, coming this fall, is a graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s short story “Troll Bridge.” In between there have been covers for The Walking Dead, Squirrel Girl, and S.H.I.E.L.D., among many others. On top of all her creative achievements, Doran is also now credited as a pioneer in comics self-publishing, and continues to advocate tirelessly for creators’ rights to their own work.

Your replies are on the way, Tumblr
Just wanted to let you know that we’re putting the finishing touches on replies, and making sure they play nicely with everything else on this platform.
“Why did they go away? Why, staff, whyyyy?” Fair question. We had a gaggle of overlapping message-like systems—namely, asks, fan mail, reblogging with commentary, question posts (rare!), and, yes, replies. When we finally introduced actual instant messaging a couple months ago, we had a lot of untangling to do.
In order to make all these systems work together, we had to do some back-end retooling, which meant taking down replies for a bit. For longer than we expected. Sorry about that.
And we get it—replies fill a very particular need (and you were very clear about expressing that need). They’re a kind of super like. A way to fully express your feelings about a thing without expecting anything in response. A gift.
When they come back, they’ll be even better. People will be able to reply to your posts multiple times, and you’ll even be able to reply to your own posts. Simple changes, yes, but ones that open up lots of possibilities.
Best of all, we’ve laid the down the engineering and design groundwork for even more substantial improvements down the road. Replies will be able to develop side-by-side with messaging.
More to come, soon enough. We know you all miss replies. We hope you enjoy their imminent return.
FLORIDA SCHOOLS PANIC ABOUT TAMAKIS’ ‘THIS ONE SUMMER’
2016 So Far
I’m working very hard, so forgive me if I’m not very communicative these days. Here’s what’s up.
I’m deep into the final stages of Neil Gaiman’s TROLL BRIDGE, a fully painted graphic novel adaptation of Neil’s story that I’ve been working on part time for years now. Oh, the odyssey this has been. The book will be available from DARK HORSE COMICS shipping September 2016, but I think it goes on sale October 3.
I think we’ve created a work that looks nothing like most of the comics today. It’s both fun and creepy, and I’ve learned a lot doing it.
In its 11th week, AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE STAN LEE tops the New York Times bestseller list once again.
If you haven’t gotten it yet, most of the online bookstores have it on sale right now at a GREAT price. Yes, you can get it signed direct from me at my bookstore, but you can get it for a very low price at Amazon. I can’t sell it to you for a better price than that.
CBS News did a feature on Stan in honor of his 93rd birthday, and you can see an article here! The feature spotlighted many pages from the book! It was great to see that on a bright Sunday morning!
Incidentally, I’m often asked about what it is like to work with different writers. One of the things I like best about working with Peter David (with whom I’ve worked on a number of projects including the STAN LEE book,) is that Peter is incredibly considerate of his artist collaborators. He is very careful to provide reference sources in the script. Many work hours go down the rabbit hole trying to chase pictures to match what the writer wants.
I mentioned this tip to some young artists and writers who’ve never considered this as an issue. But whenever you work with someone else, try to get them to put reference sources directly in the script so your peeps don’t have to read your mind or track things down.
Also with regard to the STAN LEE book, Allan Harvey, my production assistant and letterer, is a noted comics historian and collector. Many of the classic comics in the book were referenced from Allan’s personal archive. I can only imagine what a tough time I’d have tracking all of these things down without Allan’s hard work.
Speaking of hard work, I just sent Allan the first payment on work for the restoration of A DISTANT SOIL Volume III. OMG.
Over at ELECTRICOMICS, more great news, as it was chosen by PIPEDREAM as the best digital comics app of 2015!
THE GUARDIAN UK also chose ELECTRICOMICS as one of the best iPhone and iPad apps of 2015.
And the piece by Alan Moore that I illustrated, BIG NEMO, placed 4th in the PIPEDREAM best webcomics poll of 2015! Not bad for a short story!
I have two short works coming out in upcoming issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001: issue #8 and a later issue I can’t name as yet. Pencils and inks. I hope you will watch for them!
I also have cover art for SPECTRUM coming out soon. SPECTRUM is a comic based on the web tv series CON MAN starring FIREFLY actors Nathan Fillion and Adam Tudyk. Check out this story from ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.
And I have yet another cover coming out, this time for SQUIRREL GIRL #7 and MARVEL COMICS!
I love this book, it’s super-cute and fun! Coming in April!
I’m also looking forward to getting started on a project with Top Cow, and I am juggling other offers as well. I’m going to have to make some hard choices, because I just can’t accept everything that’s coming my way. It’s good problem to have, surely! I just have to stay organized and focused. Easy, right?
I’m also doing some convention appearances this year in places I’ve never been so check them out.
INDIANA COMIC CON, April 29-May 1, featuring actors from Game of Thrones and Star Wars, as well as comic creators including George Perez, Jim Shooter, Mark Waid and more!
WIZARD WORLD DesMoines, May 13-15, featuring HERCULES actor Kevin Sorbo! Writer Peter David and I will be signing copies of AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE STAN LEE!
At least one more to be announced.
And don’t forget, pages from A DISTANT SOIL are loaded five days a week on this website! The main page features a new pinup every week, but the graphic novel chapters are loaded in chronological order. Click HERE to start. Thanks!
