An early issue with my setting was all the damn ads. If you've ever been to a sporting venue or anything with a lot of sponsorship, you know there are brand names slapped over everything, everywhere. It's inescapable. And since I'm going to have to draw that kind of thing quite a bit, that kinda presents a problem. The story is set in modern times in a real place -- Albuquerque, NM -- so simply not drawing advertisements will look wrong, not to mention weirdly blank. I could suck it up and have huge BUDWEISER and HARLEY DAVIDSON and SUNTRUST taking up panel space, but do I really want to give free adspace to all these companies, and do they want to be associated with me?
Turns out making fake logos is weirdly fun. It started out with a few placeholders, but now I've got fake brands, fake shows, fake bands -- I wouldn't call it an Alternate Universe, but nobody here drives a Ford, they drive a Mule (because Nothing Kicks Like A Mule). Nobody wears Lacoste; all the polo shirts have a tiny embroidered coconut crab, the official logo of the Birgus lifestyle brand (a softshell crab for the ladies' line). Beer provided by Javelina Brewery. Sporting gear by Uzani and OIP (One Inch Punch), and when you need hydration, you crack open a SweetiePie SPort.
To tie in with the Henry Darger post from last week, I first read about Sweetie Pie from one of his lesser-known manuscripts, which started as an autobiography but turned into a ~5000 page account of the supernaturally powerful twister, Sweetie Pie. It's a pretty weird juxtaposition of name and content, and I liked it enough to turn it into a beverage company.
Sweetie Pie was a sugary juice drink popular during the '70s. The original incarnation on the left is still around, but the company exploded and has since expanded into almost every drink market. The bottle on the right is just one of their many SPort lines, filling what would have been Gatorade's shoes. Minor character Hannah Silva is taking a refreshing swig there at the bottom. She never loses her cool, but she always looks ready to freak out.
