The World Editor changes everything about how we play Super Mario Maker. Not even just Super Mario Maker 2...this is the evolution of the series that should have been part of Super Mario Maker 2 at release.
The World Editor is basically THE defining feature of Super Mario Maker 2.
Think about it. There were enough new elements in SMM2 to justify a new game, but there wasn’t anything that substantially changed the formula. Even then, in order to include the 3D World theme, they had to go against the synergy between game modes that made the first game so special.
Something was weird about SMM2′s development. It didn’t have a central vision when it released. The story campaign is okay, but the level editor and Course World are the main point of Super Mario Maker. Those two things weren’t fundamentally different from that way they worked in the original game; they just had more options.
BUT. If the development team had tightened their focus a little bit, maybe postponed the 3D World theme until they could figure out how to match it with the other themes, things could have gone differently.
If the World Editor and the Koopalings were in the release version of the game, then it becomes clearer that the new level environments are part of the overall hook for Super Mario Maker 2: making themed worlds and sharing entire 40-level games!
This makes Super Mario Maker less about milking each level for as much potential as possible, and more about making levels that come together to make a cohesive experience. We know Super Mario Maker doesn’t really specialize in “cohesive experiences”. Every iteration of the game lets you play a campaign of random levels. While that’s fun in its own way, it’s not like playing a real map where levels are deliberately crafted to complement one another. The World Editor is exactly what Super Mario Maker 2 needed to evolve the way we play Super Mario Maker.
It’s just weird that the defining feature of the game didn’t come out until almost a year after its release. But hey, it’s coming out tomorrow, and I am really, really hyped.
