_ _ _ #TCHERVEJA #bebamenosbebamelhor #GoldenQueenBee #cervejaartesanal #cervejasartesanais #cervejaespecial #craftbeer #instabeer #instacerveja #cervejadodia #cervejariaartesanal #cervejacaseira #cervejaliquidosagrado #cervejagourmet #chopp #cervejagelada #cervejacomouro #choppgelado #ouro #churrascada #cerveja #instachurras #belgianstrongale #belgianbeer #picanha #cervejabelga #GoldenQueenBee24k #churrasco #lupulo #worldbeercup (em São Paulo, Brazil)
2 award-winning Alberta beers to try
I’m convinced we all win when an Alberta beer is handed an award. The benefit to the brewer is obvious: an ego boost, the feeling that maybe it wasn't such a crazy business to get into after all, hopefully a bump in sales.
For the rest of us, that award is an opportunity, and not just in terms of getting a decent beer recommendation. It’s the starting point of a conversation about whether we agree or not and, more importantly, why that is.
That can lead to moments of reflection on the state of the industry (or art, if you prefer) and where it's headed, at least in the near term. Action comes of that, and evolution rolls on.
Following the successes in May of Calgary's Big Rock Brewery at the Canadian International Beer Awards and Red Deer's Troubled Monk at the World Beer Cup (congrats, both!), I did some reflecting of my own. Personally, I like where things are going.
Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter Big Rock Brewery 10.4% ABV Canadian International Beer Awards: Gold - Best of Alberta; Gold – Specialty Beers
Given the strength of this ale, aged 6 months in oak bourbon barrels, I enlisted my usual tasting crew, mom and dad (no, I don’t live with them), who are always eager to get crafty despite, or perhaps because of, the fridge stocked with Pilsner and Sleeman’s downstairs.
The complexity of this seasonal kept them guessing, dad especially. "Bitter," he said, then suddenly, "chocolatey. It's good. It's actually more like licorice." Then mom: "I like the fizz. Sweet. It's nice." She also noted a "heaviness."
They're right on all counts about this red-brown porter. The experience begins with a scent of licorice, bread and chocolate. A sip starts with a thick sweetness before yielding to smooth espresso at the end. The transition is seamless, bridged by whiskey that mellows to a pleasant warmth.
That is, there are so many reasons for the accolades. This is a marvel of a beer.
Moment of reflection: Alberta beer is a culture of innovation. It's hard to keep up with Big Rock's almost iterative approach to brewing, and that’s a good thing. After more than 3 decades, the province's pioneer of craft is still setting an example by taking risks. Nice to see them recognized for it.
(Here’s my list of all the Alberta breweries that won at the Canadian International Beer Awards.)
Open Road American Brown Ale Troubled Monk Brewery 5.5% ABV World Beer Cup: Silver – American-style brown ale
I should admit that, in general, American brown ale is not my favourite style of beer. Nevertheless, I can see why Open Road tantalized taste buds at the World Beer Cup, which bills itself as “the most prestigious beer competition in the world.”
First, it stands out from other brown ales I've had for its earthiness. Crack the can and almost immediately emitted are aromas of grain, cedar and even hemp, as if Open Road were the Easy Rider of Alberta beer.
It pours an attractive red brown, with a dirty white head that dissipates to an archipelago of bubble islands fed by steady streams of fizz.
The earthiness in the scent carries into the flavour, a toasty malt that includes more of that cedar woodiness, walnut, medium coffee and a savoury sweetness that had me thinking salted toffee.
What really intrigued me, however, was how that sweetness interacts with the hops.
The balance between them is almost acrobatic, leaving the drinker to wonder how it was achieved. While one takes the edge off the other, each also highlights its counterpart before joining raised hands to inevitable and uproarious applause. A commendable feat, whether you care for the show or not.
Moment of reflection: With Troubled Monk's win, Alberta beer takes a big step toward recognition as one of Canada's craft beer centres of awesomeness. The door is open, the music has suddenly stopped and everyone is looking this way. What comes next is up to Alberta brewers.

SHOCK-ING WIN AT WORLD BEER CUP 2016! In the Belgian Wit category last night at the World Beer Cup awards ceremony in Philadelphia, Shock Top took home the gold, to the surprise of thousands of hungover brewers in attendance. Shock Top’s sassy spokes-orange Wedgehead was on hand to accept the award and sling pre-written insults at the crowd. “Look at you guys, you look like someone cloned the cast of Duck Dynasty using nothing but flannel, alcohol and repurposed pubic hair. Don’t hate me because I’m a third rate-knockoff of a second rate beer, hate me because I’m $27 a half barrel.” He then dropped his trophy, yelled “Mohawks Rule!”, planted a wet kiss on Brewer’s Association figurehead Charlie Papazian and walked off the stage into an orange limousine filled with strippers and Hoegaarden. As it pulled away, the window rolled down, exposing Mr. Head’s buttocks, which were painted blue.
