Luna's Notes: The height measurements are in brackets because these are internal measurements and I'm not 100% sure they're like. accurate to the world's scale.., shrugs. anyways I tried to focus on specific comparisons to give you a good idea of things. Also I think I'm gonna make Director a Little Taller than before perhaps. Just a bit. god theyre so tall
I thought I'd have mroe to say here tbh but I think I did a pretty good job outlining it ~
edit: I forgot to add this but SLS' height is 144 cm (so the lower height limit is 145 cm)
Your question is: what is considered the most sacred place in your world? What makes it so special? Is that consideration based on actual reality or pure belief?
NOOOO /jk Thank you for the ask!
There are many sacred places in my world but one in particular features in the first book: the Sundial.
The Tetradic Alliance has four capital cities, one for each region, whose representatives meet in the southernmost city. They gather in the huge Sundial plaza, under a tower fittingly called the Gnomon after the shadow-casting blade on a sundial. It's even built to resemble a giant gnomon, its shadow sweeping to point toward each of the other three capital cities throughout the day.
Ranged in circles around the Sundial are shrines dedicated to major gods and spirits from across the Tetrad. Each entity takes many different forms depending on the culture – for example, lakes may be represented by a naga in one place and a different spirit in another, or the sun is called one name by the Mbenu people and another name elsewhere. But no matter what humans believe, the sun will always be the same sun, and a mountain or river will always be the same mountain or river.
This collection of gods and spirits is known as The Painted Pantheon (for their many colors and shapes). It's not really a syncretic religion but tries to represent as many Lopenyan religions as possible.
The Pantheon's shrines, placed where the Tetradic Alliance was born and where many travelers visit and worship, are meant to demonstrate that Lopenya (well, western Lopenya) is united despite its enormous variety of cultures. No conflict is allowed in the Sundial because here the representatives keep peace between regions, and here Lopenyans will always find a piece of their homeland.
At least, that's the goal. But the Tetrad was always fractured, and perhaps the Sundial is, too...
So in the hellaverse it seems like hell is still supposed to be a ‘punishment’ for sinners, but it doesn’t really seem that way with how the Overlords work and whatnot (especially with Valentino- geez that man needs a beating). I wouldn’t mind if it was stated in the show to be not true and just something humans made up, but it’s obvious that isn’t the case.
It seems like it’s really only a hell for the people who fall for smaller crimes, so would you keep this aspect in your version? I wouldn’t
Yeah I don't fully get how Overlords work within the Hazbin universe either hence why I kinda made them less powerful that they seem in the show. Like, they can make deals with other sinners for their souls? How? How do they have that power? How did they get that power? Why do they have more than the fucking king of hell himself?
I did answer the 'punishment' question in the past where it depends on each ring but Pride doesn't punish anyone because Lucifer doesn't want to. Not in the "I don't want to hurt anyone" sort of way more than a "fuck you, dad!" way where he's acting like a rebellious teenager and refusing to play jailer/continuing to defy God (yes I know God isn't a thing in Hazbin for some reason but sssh). Plus his dislike for humans/sinners also is him just like 'nah I'm keeping my distance'. So, the reason why Overlords are so powerful in Pride is basically the lack of order or 'punishment'. Yes they're in Greed and Sloth too but no where as powerful as they would be in Pride and if they do feel as if they're starting to become a threat/a 'risk' to Hellborns in that ring, the Sin of that ring makes sure to shut that shit down.
It's called 'the wild west of hell' for reason and those who landed themselves into other rings that aren't as 'kind' to sinners attempt to smuggle themselves into Pride with vary success. I have Valentino originally landing in the Lust ring but managed to escape but that wasn't an easy feat neither due to well...It's Valentino and being I did keep Ozzie's dislike of use of force in this AU...
Let's just say he ain't gonna have a fun time in the future if he's ever dragged back to Lust. I'll leave it at that.
Overlords are basically powerful gang/business leaders in this AU. (I'd use the term 'organized crime' in some cases, but that'd imply there's a law enforcement in hell which there really isn't in the traditional sense but I'll save that for another time being I got a lot of notes on rules and laws in Hell and likely will make a detailed post when I feel like I'm ready to do so) They don't have that 'deal with the devil contract' thing (with the expectation of Alastor maybe. Maybe) going but may have a version of it but this is something as i'm still fleshing things out and haven't thought much about this until Hazbin itself dropped. Again, I'll likely talk about Overlords in-depth at a later date once I feel I have a solid foundation on how I'm gonna handle them.
So not really keeping it as is. It's kinda of 'Life is what you make of it' sort of deal and depending on your sin(s) and/or where you land in Hell, you can survive okay. Yeah, life is gonna be shitty regardless, but you're stuck here here so might as well make the best of it. I'm likely gonna change and expand on things as I go being with every new bite of content coming out of Hazbin and Helluva Boss (though I gave up on that show being Viv rather write her Wattpad Yaoi fanfiction suppose to giving us a fun show about a bunch of demon assassins but may still adapt something from new episodes even if I don't plan on watching them anymore) gives me something new to play with if I don't scrap it entirely, and trust me: Hazbin has been giving me a sandbox of shit to play with.
In honor of Worldbuilding Wednesday... How do you present your worldbuilding to your audience without overwhelming or boring them? What techniques do you use?
Thanks for the ask! To be honest, it's not really a hard and fast rule that I work with. It's sorta just a vibe? But essentially "explain as I go". I don't reveal anything that isn't relevant until it is. For example, if the story is about a trek in a fantasy land, I don't need to mention the currency/bartering system until they're actively making purchases or bartering. And even so, I try to refrain from full-on explanations.
So instead of a scene like:
She pulled out a dalc- a round gold coin about 10 centimeters in radius with the previous queen's face stamped into it- and made the purchase. A dalc was the highest form of physical currency in their country, and the previous queen, Queen Annie XIII, was so renowned for her economic advancements that she'd usurped King John IV for the honor of her face on the coin. Cassie won this coin by yada yada yada
I'd instead do something more like:
She presented him with a round gold coin. "Would a dalc suffice, or is that still not enough for His Royal Stingy-ness?" It'd better fucking suffice. She doubted even Jack had a dalc to spare.
And just leave it at that. Frankly, none of the other bits of information means shit to a reader, at least not in that moment. So if it REALLY becomes important at some point, I'll just wait until that point to explain the rest of it. It helps to keep in mind that, while this is a book, and the reader is new to the world, no one else in the story is (unless you made a character just for that). While you still need to explain things to the reader, it's just as jarring for them if the characters act as if they're in an educational show for elementary school students.
If you made a character just for this express purpose of having someone else who also needs the world explained to them, I think a good measure to keep in mind is the kinds of questions you (or someone you know whose personality is similar to your character) would actually ask in this situation. Would someone drop-kicked into fae-land ACTUALLY give a shit about whose face is on that coin? Would they care enough to ask? Would it ever actually occur to them to ask how their irrigation system works, or how the monarchy was established, while they're on a cross-country journey to save the princess?
Yeah so that's it, lol. Long-winded, but the TLDR is "context only as context is needed." Thanks again for the ask!
👀 - A piece of lore you’ve been waiting for an excuse to share
Ooo ok! So basically the Patron of Darkness, Dusk, lost his family - his mother, his father, and his twin sister Dawn - to the Big Bad Organization That Doesn't Have A Name Yet.
For their birthday some years prior to this, Dawn had gotten them matching pendants, infused with a spell that could transform them into twin blades. Before, Dusk only had his own, but amongst the wreckage of his home he'd found his sister's pendant too, and now he wears and uses both of them in combat.
🔮 - Is there a magic system? Explain how it works
Ye! It's an elemental-type magic system, with eight main Forces (elements) that each branch off into their own separate sub-forces and -elements. There are some areas where the lines between the different Forces blur, especially for simple spells and other spells that blend two or more types of magic.
(Disclaimer that this WIP is in its very early stages, so details of the magic system may be subject to change, but this is the general idea I have for it.)
The magic itself has the properties of energy, but is unique from other kinds of energy. It cannot be converted into or from other forms of energy (thermal, chemical, etc.), it's more of its own thing. However, this 'magical energy' can be used for any Force. There's no "Fire magic energy" or "Nature magic energy", it's all just one form of energy that can be used for any kind of spell before it is released back into the surroundings to be used again.
But similar to real-world energy, there is a constant total amount of magical energy in the universe, and it is present in the atmosphere and surroundings everywhere on the planet- but some places have greater concentrations of magical energy than others.
So the main Forces are (currently) called Fire, Water, Earth, Sky, Nature, Phase, Light, and Darkness. Each Force has a complementary one, as you can see!
Fire deals with actual fire and smoke, alongside general heat manipulation and energy manipulation. (regular energy, not magical energy) Hence, Fire can also assist or cause processes like melting and evaporation. It's called simply Fire because that's easier for young mages (and me) to remember 😅 Fire magicians are commonly found in colder climates and are known for their warm characters and quick tempers. They're good at thinking on their feet and improvising.
Water deals with ofc water, and can even affect solutions and any mixture that happens to contain water. It also deals with ice, mainly because I never understood in fantasy why water and ice had to be separate elements. Water also deals with reducing heat energy and cooling! So processes like condensation and freezing can be initiated/sped up with the help of a water spell. Same as Fire, its name isn't exactly all-encompassing of its abilities but just bear with me ok i'm bad at names Water mages tend to have qualities like flexibility, resilience, and adaptability. Most people who work with water tend to have a serene confidence to them.
Earth deals with soil, stone, and generally geological materials. This also means that alongside the earth itself, any materials and substances found within the earth can also be controlled, like minerals, metals, and fossils. Magicians can bend and reform the topography to their will, but this in particular takes a lot of magical energy and can be quite taxing on the mage themselves. For this reason Earth magicians typically need to be physically strong and resistant, able to withstand and work against the pressure and movement of the earth's crust.
Sky magic focuses on clouds, winds, and lightning, as well as precipitation. It shares a unique bond with Water as they can both deal with, well, water XD. Sky magicians can control wind direction and can bring about major changes in weather and even the climate as a whole depending on how powerful they are. However, it takes a lot of magical energy as well. Sky mages are typically light on their feet, agile, and fast, able to keep up with the wind and float alongside clouds.
Nature magic consists of interacting with vegetation and wildlife, bending the bounty of the earth to one's will. Magicians can communicate with the life around them and some will specialize in certain species or classes of animals. They can also reform plants and cause seeds in the soil to germinate and grow, but the type of plants they'll be able to generate or manipulate depends on where they are and the type of soil available. Some more powerful mages can cause non-native plants to grow in an area to suit their needs, but they need to be careful that invasive plant species don't wipe out the native flora. These magicians are also the ones most likely to have familiars and they tend to meet them fairly earlier than other kinds of mages. They're typically good healers, and have good communications skills and high emotional intelligence.
Phase might be my least developed Force right now. It generally focuses on magic in relation to physics. Stuff like gravity manipulation, space manipulation, portals, phasing through solids, and controlling energy and particles. It can't convert pure elements or substances into a new kind of element, but Phase magic can work as a sort of catalyst for chemical reactions. It's one of the most powerful Forces there is and the most difficult to master. Similar to Water magicians, Phase magicians are highly adaptable to their surroundings. They are capable of bending gravity and the physical state of anything to their will. They also tend to be highly studious and have excellent memory, with good problem-solving skills.
Light is my favorite! XD it's also the first one I came up with, and the reason for this WIP's existence in the first place lmao. It deals with light energy generation, manipulation, and radiation manipulation. It deals a little more heavily with electromagnetic radiation in general than Fire does, and non-Light waves have even formed their own sub-Force of study. Light magic also allows for spells such as casting illusions, invisibility, cloaking, and uncloaking. Lasers, sparks, and moon, star or sun formations are common methods of harnessing light. Light magicians have excellent sight and can specialize in different types of vision, and are known for their ability to scrutinize and put together tiny details.
Darkness is the final Force and tends to overlap with Light a lot more than the other Forces do with each other. It deals with the absence of light or energy, such as through absorption or other means to form a total vacuum. Darkness-formed vacuums can function as force fields to protect the mage. This Force can consist of shadow generation/manipulation, leeching an area of light until it's perfect to hide in. It can also generate smoke, similar to Fire. Like Light, Darkness also allows for generating illusions, invisibility, and cloaking. Camouflage is a common Darkness power. Darkness mages also tend to have improved eyesight, as well as improved reflexes and stamina. They usually work in solitude, but are beneficial assets to have on your side.
Aside from this, a magician from a given Force of magic will, over their years of studying this form of magic and being exposed to its spells, build up a resistance or even immunity to its extreme effects.
Some skills or abilities blend two or more types of magic, such as teleportation (Darkness+Phase) or flying (Sky+Phase). For skills like these, a magician will have to have studied how both or all the Forces pertain to this ability.
Some more powerful and ambitious magicians will have studied and become qualified to work with two or more Forces, but these are a bit rare due to the difficulty and skill level required in mastering general magic and specializing in even one Force.
👑 - Are there rulers? A government? Who calls all the shots?
I love stories with monarchy, but as far as i am aware only Liam's story (royal whump) have some sort of royalty.
For rest of stories there is your average corrupt modern goverment.
I may be assuming stuff a bit much, but you really look like a ghost, so you could be either a spectre (in the real sense of the original word this time haha), or guess you could also be a in the family of dead players
the dead players group is supposed to be made of undead mobs inspired player, but i guess literal ghost can totally fit in there too ^^
Since you answered an ask about Blue and Haru’s romantic feelings I’ll ask you this question I’ve been mulling over for pet whumper accounts, in your universe of pets what is the line between romantic and I guess platonic/familial love or attraction/affection in your settings with pets?
Some accounts seem to portray the image that “good” pet owners really do love their pet platonically, but with pets being humans who are enslaved the borders of that distinction must be pretty hazy I must imagine.
I’m very interested in what kind of line exists in your universe of pets like would an owner who actually fell in love with a pet be considered weird? When does it become weird? Some owners have intimate relationships with their pets and at least some of those must be consensual, as much as that is possible in such a skewed power relationship, and so what would the line be? Obviously having intercourse is acceptable because they train some pets to do that I believe you’ve said, but would kissing a pet be weird? Would taking a pet on a date be weird? If so, what’s the distinction between a date and taking a pet with you to lunch or the park and spending time with them?
I hope my question is making sense. I know what I’m try to get at in my head I’m just not sure I’ve explained it well enough. I’m fascinated by the distinction and where your society might parse pet-owner relationships and how they would make sense philosophically to the people that live in the universe.
hehe, no problem, these are so good for worldbuilding👀👀👀👀
The problem would be not as much that you love your pet, but that doing so on a way humanizes them. You can love them platonically like a pet and that’s okay, or you can love them platonically like say, you’d love a friend or a family member and that’s not okay, cause implies they’d be more than pets to you.
Same for romance, although you’d hardly have a consensual romance unless you are humanizing a pet, and it’s from there that it would begin to get problematic, not so much the physical actions themselves.
Like, seeing a pet not adress a owner by ⭐ respectable fancy pronouns ⭐ is weirder than seeing an out-of-cotentxet kiss. You are not supposed to go to your pet for advice, or tell them about your life, or have them be anything other than a trophy partner. You ar enot supposed to take it seriosuly, you know? I doubt any consenseual/healthy relationship would go like this, so either they fake or they’d indeed be considered taboo/something bad.
As for places and dates and stuff, there are places that accepts pets, places that don’t and places that accept with certain restrictions. Like there are places that accept pets but only if they stay on the floor - orfeu has been banned of a bunch of these already. You’d not be able to have a ~~date on a place like that. Others wouldn’t be worried about the pets going on the table, so people won’t even pay much attention
Also there is a lot of international or at least interegional trafficking. You’d hardly remain on the safe city you enlisted for. So, some regions are way more targeted by the companies for people to register..
In places like that people tend to be more accepting of pets in general because the reality that they were just people in complicated situation hits closer to home, but these regions are also not targetted for sales, just for recruit. Places that are targetted as pet-buyers tend to be separated from the reality of where they came from.
