Writeblr Intro

Hello! I'm Ana, she/her, 20s, queer WOC. I've already made a couple of friends here, but I'm always down for more!

My main genre to read and write is fantasy, though I have WIPs in several other genres including horror, mystery, and sci-fi. I write/read romance too, but that's usually as a subplot rather than the main genre.

I have about a million WIPs, but my primary focus is Traveling Bards (unofficial title).

About my WIP:

Traveling Bards is a portal fantasy/isekai comedy about a set of triplets that wake up in another world and, with their second lease on life, dedicate themselves to wreaking havoc and becoming menaces to society (and living out their bucket list dreams, but that's a story for another post).

Would love to have some more writing buddies, whether that's for motivation, sharing advice, critiques, or just commiserating together! I'm also open to tag games, though I might not always respond. Please feel free to tag me, or let me know if you'd be open to tags!

Katsuko finally tore her gaze from her princess to lock eyes with the king. Her pearl pendant, a gift from her love, seemed to grow warm against her skin, hidden beneath her armor. She tilted her head, a practiced smirk sliding its way across her face. Her blood roared in her ears. 

“I wonder only how her highness would prefer I present the champion’s head. On a stick, or on a platter?”

Liesel wasted no time getting comfortable. She was in the tent by the time Faye and Felix made it to the clearing, camera, journal, and pen already out. Naia was rifling through the snacks with mild interest. Faye conjured cushions for herself and all but collapsed onto them.

"The next time you want to go on a hike, leave me out of it." Faye groaned.

I threw myself onto my bed. Aki jumped atop me right after, snuggling into my chest. It was summer, but I'd be damned if I ever passed up an opportunity to cuddle with her. My fingers ran idly through her dense fur, luring her into a nap. We laid there for what felt like hours, dozing off under the dimming sunlight streaming through the curtains.

Katsuko maintained a desperate grip on her stoic facade. Clenched fists and teeth masked her trembling, and slow, even breaths kept her heart from leaping from her chest. They would see her dead. They would see her gutted open and consumed if she faltered.

Here are some crazy grasshopper mouse facts for those who are not familiar with the most badass mouse species on the planet

- They are primarily carnivorous, and their diet is made up of not only bugs but also snakes, lizards and other mice.

- They hunt like true predators, slowly stalking and creeping up on their prey before ambushing them. They will sometimes let out a screech as they attack.

- Like wolves, they howl to establish territory and have a specially developed throat to produce louder vocalizations. They will stand up on their hind legs and throw their head back to howl- a sound that can be heard from 100 meters away!

- Grasshopper mouse behavior is linked to lunar cycles and they are more active during a full moon.

- These mice have been hunting bark scorpions and evolving alongside them for so long that they’ve evolved a mutation where scorpion venom that is lethal to other animals is converted into a painkiller in the grasshopper mouse’s body.

In writing, epithets ("the taller man"/"the blonde"/etc) are inherently dehumanizing, in that they remove a character's name and identity, and instead focus on this other quality.

Which can be an extremely effective device within narration!

They can work very well for characters whose names the narrator doesn't know yet (especially to differentiate between two or more). How specific the epithet is can signal to the reader how important the character is going to be later on, and whether they should dedicate bandwidth to remembering them for later ("the bearded man" is much less likely to show up again than "the man with the angel tattoo")

They can indicate when characters stop being as an individual and instead embody their Role, like a detective choosing to think of their lover simply as The Thief when arresting them, or a royal character being referred to as The Queen when she's acting on behalf of the state

They can reveal the narrator's biases by repeatedly drawing attention to a particular quality that singles them out in the narrator's mind

But these only work if the epithet used is how the narrator primarily identifies that character. Which is why it's so jarring to see a lot of common epithets in intimate moments-- because it conveys that the main character is primarily thinking of their lover/best friend/etc in terms of their height or age or hair color.

I have never thought of it this way! That’s so interesting. So maybe you’d replace those descriptors with actions - reaching up to rub X’s blonde hair between their fingers, following the path of X’s tears dripping pat crow’s feet, etc

So you maintain the intimacy but keep the visual component? I love this, brb gonna go make some edits

“It was a mistake, my lord-- practically a compliment to the lady, I’d say--” Liesel interjected, but the Baron couldn’t be stopped. 

“You dare to insinuate something untoward--”

“We insinuate her beauty! Yes, always a good thing, to be full of youth and beauty-- there were no implications--”

“--You mean to call my honor into question, is that it?! To paint me as some-- some vulgar knave?!”

“Your words, not ours,” Faye muttered, only to wheeze as Naia rammed an elbow into her ribs.

“Of course not, Lord Bellwood!” Naia insisted, smile tight. Despite her continuous attempts to placate him, her grip on her instrument was becoming increasingly furious. 

“I should have never given any chances to a collection of filthy northern barbarians-”

“Okay, you know what? Fuck you, actually.” It was out of Liesel's mouth before the words even processed in her head, sending Faye into a fit of laughter. Liesel was past the point of patience. Naia gaped, but the surprise died immediately in favor of acceptance. In for a penny...

“Your mother’s a whore,” She said with finality.

I've been had!!! I guess that means I'll offer another snippet!!

She caressed her cheek, a feather-light touch of fingertips ghosting over embalmed skin and protruding bone. Time hadn’t been kind to her poor Izumi- but that was fine. Aika would rectify it no matter the cost. She would wrest their happy ending from the clutches of fate with her bare hands. 

She lifted crumbling remains out of their resting place carefully, laying them out on the forest floor. The process, from there, was entirely uncomplicated. Aika had prepared extensively; endless hours of research, endless hours spent tirelessly combing for every minute detail and necessity, all finally coming to a head. Knife, candles, book- and most importantly, offering. The language was ancient, syllables heavy and foreign on her tongue, but Aika was practiced. The words dripped like molasses past her lips, barely above a whisper. Plain beeswax candles burned acrid, sour notes into the air, stench turning foul and rotten as the ritual progressed. 

The predawn mist- once a dewy chill against her skin- turned glacial, gnawing at her fingertips and scraping the curve of her spine. It thickened into a fog, until the dim candle flames were the only visible light- until it was barely visible, too. The deer struggled against its bindings, bucking and bleating. She silenced it in the next moment, as the summer night grew impossibly darker.

It was dark out. This deep into the forest, the foliage was too dense for the moonlight. The soft mist blanketing the earth made it easier for her to overturn the dense, rich soil. The heavy silence seemed to elevate the wet shnck of the shovel pillaging the ground. Not a single other creature was alive in that moment, the world suspended into liminal space. And yet, the forest seemed to breathe.

However long it took her to dig, she didn’t care to know. But eventually the shovel found its target, an unmistakable thudding against a hollow case bringing an end to her search. A crowbar did the rest- biting into old wood, half-rotten and swollen. She tamped down the fluttering of her heart- it was still too soon to celebrate. 

Slowly, gently, the casket was pried open, revealing the treasure nestled in its belly. Still beautiful, after all this time. Tarnished, but fixable. She smiled.

“I missed you, Izumi.”

It just adds so much weight to the scene, the silence, but the world is giving her the space, the time, to do what she needs to do.
