2x19: Kalele-Where Steve is trying to keep an open mind

Steve is having a hard time with this situation with Mary and her being arrested for Diamond smuggling. Danny has some information that he didn’t know and he was relaying that. Steve just needs some help and to sort out this fucked up semi involvement.

Steve can tell that something is up with Danny. He’s been quiet at work for the last few days and he knows that’s never a good thing. Steve has been racking his brain all day trying to figure out why Danny’s been so quiet as of late. He thinks that maybe it has something to do with the kids, but what he doesn’t know is that Danny is trying to find a good way to tell him that he’s dating Harry. My question...how do you think Danny would tell Steve about his relationship?!

Ooh~ Yeah I can totally see this. 

At first, he doesn’t notice it too much and later curses himself for not noticing it. He and Danny are the leaders of 5-0, a shared control even if Steve himself is recognized as the boss. He and Danny are equals… and it’s part of why they’ve split up more in recent cases. As much as he acts like those lil quips about getting older don’t get to him…they do. But more so they worry him about the effectiveness of the team. So he sends Junior out with Danny when he can so he could learn more about the detective side of things, the civilian way of thinking, while he brings Tani with him to show her a bit of the military way of thinking. Same applies with Lou and Adam even though they have more experience in the field and it depends more or less on the case…

But none of them have come to Steve about Danny being quiet. Then again they don’t know him like he does. He tries to bring him into a conversation, or make him mad and bring him into banter. Not really mad just…to spark up something that’ll let slip whatever is really bothering him. But Danny is guarded. He’s being very specifics with his words and it only makes Steve panic. What could be so bad that Danny’s hiding it from Steve? 

The kids were the only logical reason, but they were fine. Grace was healing up nicely and still planning on going off to college… so…Charlie? But no, he seemed perfectly fine the last time Steve saw him. What if it wasn’t an illness or injury though? What if…what if Rachel decided to move again after Grace was off to college? It wouldn’t be absurd…but she was Charlie’s main parent so if she moved…Charlie would have to go with her. People are creatures of habit, and if Rachel didn’t care if Danny followed Grace to Hawaii or not despite that his whole life and everyone he knew and love was in Jersey…who’s to say she wouldn’t do it again? And Danny….the best dad in all of creation who left everything behind to follow his child…he’d do it again, even if it pained him…

That had to be it. Danny was leaving because Rachel was taking Charlie away. 

Steve should accept it. He should accept that this was an adult decision and he should be calm and collected and respect the choices made. 

Except he did none of that. He made calls to people in high places and was getting ready to call in favors and bring it to court and let Danny have full custody of Charlie. When you save important politicians, befriend rich and influential people, and even some of the shadier criminals who maintain some sort of peace in the rough parts of town…well, Steve’s not one to turn a blind eye to help when it comes to his family. Maybe it was selfish but he knew Danny. He didn’t want to leave. One major move was more than hard enough…he didn’t deserve to be uprooted again. 

Except…after some of his friends did a little digging, there was no sign that Rachel was moving off of the island. 

So that made him frown deeply. What could be going on with Danny then? 

“I can tell him if you want me to.” Harry offered. 

Danny shook his head, “It’s gotta be me. This thing with us…it started out as an accidental flame that grew into an inferno…I should have told him from the stage of a spark…this is on me. You’re his friend too but I’m his best friend…just…give me some time to tell him.” 

“I still have some loose ends to tie up in England. So no dire rush. But if you want me to be there…just ask.” Harry said before he leaned in to kiss Danny. 

Whatever doubts he got usually disappeared with a kiss like that. But he still had to find a way to tell Steve. 

Danny racked his brain for what he could do. In the end, he decided to go with the advice of his nan. Let food be the ice breaker. He thought about what he could make to make the conversation go easier…some of Steve’s food came to mind but he wasn’t sure how Steve would react and didn’t want to be the guy who ruined his previous favorite meal or snack with the image of news that could be considered bad. So that also removed banana chocolate chip pancakes too, along with Christmas cookies. 

Truth be told…Danny spent many hours surfing through the internet looking for the perfect food to break the news to Steve with. In the end…he decided to go with some fudgy brownies. 

He had made a batch the night before, so he had some ready, but he was baking some when he asked Steve to come over. The house smelled like chocolate and he hoped that helped. 

“Those for me?” Steve asked. 

“Even if they weren’t, you’d steal at least one.” Danny countered. 

Some of the tension left Steve’s shoulders that the snarky remark. It was a very Danny thing to say and it felt better than the silence. So Steve grabbed a brownie and asked, “You finally gonna tell me what’s going on?”

Danny sighed but nodded. “I think it’s time…” 

The tension returned to Steve as he steeled himself for whatever it was. 

“I’m seeing someone. It’s…a guy. A friend…and it’s kinda very serious.”

Hc: after they got into a general pattern tony gets even more determined to enter popculture to bucky. Bucky thought beforehand that t'challa would be in a similar boat to him but nope and now bucky has to catch up on two continents worth of tv shows

Wow, that was fast. And something that’s never occurred to me before, you’re amazing, anon!!

This immediately got me thinking about endlessly-whining-but-secretly-not-minding-all-that-much Bucky, so please imagine an AU in which CW never happened for this:

When Bucky comes into the kitchen with a mulishly stubborn expression on his face, Steve is instantly worried. That expression has never led to anything good that he can remember. He’s not wrong either. 

In answer to the hesitant “What’s going on, Buck,” he receives a full-on rant, slamming cupboards and wild gestures included. It’s hard to make out what Bucky is complaining about, all Steve understands is that it has something to do with Tony, and that T’Challa is no help at all–and he can feel his stomach dropping straight through the floor.

You have to understand, as an Avenger living in the Tower with the rest of the team, it’s impossible not be invested in your friends’ relationship. It had taken months of mishaps and misunderstandings and pining (dear lord, the pining) for those three impossibly stubborn and proud men to figure their shit out. 

But they had finally done it. And even though Steve had been sceptical at first–a romance within the team just screamed trouble–he’d never seen Bucky so happy–or Tony, for that matter. (T’Challa too of course, and Steve likes the prince well enough, but they weren’t friends before and it’s different.)

Tony joins them before Steve has the chance to get to the bottom of the issue, sleep-tousled hair and eyes only half-way open, and even though Bucky continues with his rant, his tone is already softening. Good. That’s good. (And unsurprising because sleepy Tony is the best medicine against bad mood, Steve has yet to meet anyone who’s proven immune to Tony’s charm.)

“You still complaining about that?” Tony asks between an open-mouthed yawn, causing Bucky to grumble, “Well, you’re still pushing it,” back. He sounds a lot less upset and more resigned now though.

“Everything alright?” T’Challa–who somehow manages to look impeccable at any hour of the day, a characteristic most people who did not know Tony privately would’ve attributed to him–asks, strolls into the kitchen in a perfectly fitted suit that makes Bucky’s eyes darken. Tony meanwhile is too busy fumbling with the coffee machine, and yes, the sheer domesticity of the scene makes Steve think he should probably leave now.

But he’s curious now–and, as already mentioned, invested–and he can’t help but ask. So he does. He doesn’t expect Tony to burst into laughter at his question. Nor for T’Challa to join in. Or for Bucky to honest to god blush, god, Steve can’t remember the last time he saw his best friend do that.

“Tony insisted on catching him up with the 21st century,” T’Challa mercifully explains. That just causes Bucky to narrow his eyes at his partner and pull an unresisting Tony into his arms and away from T’Challa as revenge.

“Oh, please,” he huffs. “Tony might have come up with the idea, but who decided to encourage him and made suggestions about including different cultures and how it would be nice and helpful for us to get a better understanding of Wakandian culture?” There’s sarcasm dripping from those words, even as he burrows his face in Tony’s soft hair.

And well, Steve can picture it all too clearly because T’Challa is sneaky. His amused grin earns him a glare of course.

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it off, punk,” Bucky snaps. “Tony’s created weekly schedules for me and quizzes for JARVIS. There’s a grade system and everything!”

Steve tries, he really does, but he doesn’t succeed in smothering a snort. Because Tony, sweet Tony who’s still snuggling up to Bucky and appearing completely unbothered by his partners’ annoyance, would. He absolutely would.

“That reminds me,” T’Challa cuts in smoothly, voice deeper than before. He’s watching his lovers with a very intent expression, that makes Steve slowly back towards the entrance. “We still owe you your reward for passing the last one.” T’Challa’s voice is purr now, and Tony who has started to blink the sleep out of his eyes, is looking very interested and–

It’s high time to get to the gym, Natasha is probably already waiting for him Besides Steve may be very invested in his friends’ relationship but there are things he simply doesn’t need to now.

"I'M NEVER LETTING YOU GO!" "Even if that means me choking to death by hug?!" "YES!"

Steve: Tony

Tony: Yea?

Steve: I just...wanted to let you know I love you. So much.

*Steve leans in and kisses him on the lips.*

Tony: Love you too, Steve.

*They both smile.*

But if Tony said it out of the blue one day:

Tony: Steve, um,

Steve: Yea?

Tony: I just want you to know that I love you, Steve. So much, and erm-

*Tony looks sincere*

*Steve's eyes widen*

Steve: NO, NO, NO, TONY-!

Tony: Wha- Steve, I thought-

Steve: WHATEVER YOU'RE THINKING OF DOING, DON'T DO IT, I LOVE YOU, AND DEAR GOD I'M NOT LETTING YOU GO-

Steve puts his arms around Tony to grab him into a bone-crushing hug.

Tony: Ste-

Steve: I swear to God, if you're about to make a self-sacrificing move-

Tony: *Choking* Er-

Steve: I'M NOT EVER LETTING YOU GO, TONY, I DON'T CARE WHAT IT IS, YOU'RE NOT DOING IT!

Tony: I wasn't - going to do - anything, Steve, can you please - let - go- I was only - suggesting that we move in together - like, officially, so-

*Steve loosens his hold on Tony and stares at him*

Tony: Ok, I know we already spend most time at the Tower, but I thought we could make it official, like maybe we could merge our rooms, y'know, er - maybe - I mean - only if you - if you want that, of course-

Steve: Oh, god.

*Steve kisses him*

Tony: Is that a yes..?

Steve: Yes, yes, of course yes, you idiot. I'm sorry, I just - you don't say that very often - I - God, I love you.

Tony: *smiles* I know.

“Monstrosity”

No one should be surprised Stark's idea of a household pet is a spider. And yet...

They find it scuttling about inside a tank. A giant thing that's been no doubt souped up by Hydra's sneaky potions ("Chemicals, Barnes! This isn't the Salem Witch trials."), surrounded by other tanks of dead, enlarged version of bugs which he would vehemently protest on finding creepy. Worse is when the thing turns all of its beady eyes on them, raising hair on Bucky's neck and arms. If the furry palp and legs aren't enough, that thing has a human eye dangling in one of the webs. The morbid scene is straight out of a cheap horror flick. And yet much worse than aliens or flying robots he is used to seeing everyday. Even Black Widow steps back in disgust at the sight of her fellow arachnid.

Steve looks at that thing for like one second before looking at Bucky like he wants to say ", there ain't gonna be any slipper big enough for this". Bucky shrugs back, shuddering at the thumping sound of its legs. "Well, we could let Hulk squash it."

Unfortunately, he says it out loud. And worse than their misfortune of finding the final boss of any horror game, Stark makes a wounded noise at the back of his throat, his faceplate up and eyes moist when he turns to the team, his back dangerously close to the cage. Any other time, Bucky would have hit him to keep himself open so wide. Specially in front of a thing that's got all its eyes on him like he's some tasty treat. ("No, Stevie. I am not a peckish old grandmother. Your boyfriend is a dumba—Stark, get off the sea serpent!") But today, right now, he is not getting any closer to the bug. So he'll wait for when Stark gets his peachy ass away from it.

"We're killing it?"

Steve's face falls at the sight of his beau's sad puppy look and oh, see! Bucky knew that idiot would be the downfall of the two of them.

"Don't do it, Steve," Widow hisses beside them. "Don't fall for it."

Tony looks alarmed.

"But, why?"

"Tony, honey, I know you have a thing for collecting strays. But there's a skeleton on the underside of its belly."

Oh, sweet lord. Bucky hides the symptoms of his rising disgust and bile behind the vibranium fist. And yes, there is a skeleton dangling from the spider's belly.

"I'm going to go hurl in a can," Barton announces cheerfully, then grabs Wanda by her collar and runs. "And if that thing does end up in the compound, I'm moving back to the farm!"

Stark makes a broken, choked up sound and Bucky would swear it doesn't sit right with a fifty-something man, but all of them sway forward to console the inconsolable man-child. Except when Natasha takes one step to motherhen the genius, the spider hisses and spits a web at her. Thankfully, there's an eight inch thick glass standing between them and the thing, so it's fine. Though it does send them all scuttling further away from the cage.

Stark turns to look at the spider, which looks back at him. The genius looks back at them and Bucky knows, right then and there, it's game over.

"A giant spider?"

He sounds incredibly happy and excited. See, there's a reason why he hates babysitting for his punk of a best friend and his billionaire boyfriend on Friday nights. It's this very reason.

"Is it radioactive? Does it eat giant flies? Or smaller roaches? Is it male? Female? Is it going to lay eggs? Are you going to keep it in the compound? Can I see it?"

Stark doesn't look up from the various screens he has been studying for the last hour and yet seamlessly rattles off all the right answers to his brainchild. Or whatever the hell Parker is supposed to be. (Hey!)

"No. Possibly. Yes. Yes. No. No. Yes. Yes, if you swing by after you're done with your homework."

"Aw, come on!" Then. "Don't let Bucky have a fit before I get there."

Yeah. He hates the kid.

There are exactly four people cooing over the freak of nature. And Bucky is appalled to see Banner is one of them.

"Don't call it a freak, Bucky. It's not nice," Banner intones, swiveling back to the screen with a scowl on his face. Both Tony and Peter have their heads bent over the notes on the table, while Harley Keener looks closer to vibrating out of his seat.

"Have we settled on the name yet?"

"Aragog? Or Gandalf?"

"Why the hell would we name it Gandalf?"

"The beard?"

"Well, then lets go with Furball!"

"Ugh, kids," Stark groans, then mouths 'Furball' and begins to cackle. If that doesn't prove Tony Stark is a man-child.

Bucky briefly entertains the idea of going over to Sam's place. At least there, he'll get to have sex. But then Stevie has him in a headlock and is dragging him over to the communal kitchen, where he'll no doubt spend all the time bemoaning losing Tony's attention to a bug. He could and would sympathize, if he wasn't so worried about being a giant spider chomp. So now, he settles for being miserable and silently plans his quick escape to DC.
