five websites that i, a 24-year-old writer, swear by

this has probably been posted before. you have probably seen this post in a thousand different ways. but if i can get someone to hear about these sources with this post? it's a fair deal.

wordhippo.com - do you NOT know about this? girl, you are literally missing out. there are dictionary websites, thesaurus websites, but this one is revolutionary. it gives all of the following and i have, indeed, used this website almost daily since i found it: synonyms, antonyms, definitions, rhymes, sentence examples, translations, find words, word forms, and pronunciation. trust me when i say this is a game changer.

nameberry.com + behindthename.com - name websites. behindthename is a bit more thorough, but nameberry keeps up with what is popular amongst the new births in the world. they are pretty much databases with names and definitions. it's great (if you don't already use it).

surnames.behindthename.com - basically the same as above, but this one focuses on surnames. it is a lifesaver.

fantasynamegenerators.com - you stuck? don't know what to do? need a full name, a name for a specific species, a name for a school or hospital? use this website.

My Go-To Writing Sources

My compilation of all the writing sources I've used (or can remember using) over the years :) Each of them have been incredibly helpful and motivating in my writing journey, and I've provided a short description of what they offer on their channels/articles (evidently, I don't read as many articles as I should). I've also listed them from oldest to most recent (typically, the ones at the beginning of the list are channels I don't watch as often anymore, though they are still good sources of information). As I find more, I'll continue to update this post, as well.

Alexa Donne - She's a traditionally-published author who gives writing tips and shares her experience with literary agents and the publishing industry.

Jenna Moreci - She's a self-published author who gives tips on the craft and also helps authors grow their writing platform. She gives insights into the self-publishing journey and helps aspiring authors understand that particular process a bit better.

Bookfox - John Fox, an editor and published author, dives into the craft of writing. He analyses what great authors have done, explains how you can draw from movies and shows to put into your writing, and overall gives amazing tips on character, plot, and setting.

Alyssa Matesic - She's a professional editor and has worked at one of the Big Five publishing houses. She gives excellent advice on writing, editing, and publishing your novel from the first draft through the querying process and beyond.

BookEnds Literary Agency - The founder and a senior agent of BookEnds give great insights on the querying and publishing process, and they offer perspective from the agent's side, which I find really interesting. It's a great source of information if you're thinking about traditionally publishing one day (even if you're not entirely ready to begin querying).

Articles:

Reedsy Blog - There are plenty of craft, structure, and publishing articles on here that have really helped clarify any confusions I've had. Side note—I also used its writing software to write the second(ish) draft of my book (and literally the only problem I had with its software was that dark mode was behind a paywall 💔 other than that it was great).

Books:

The Art of Revision: The Last Word by Peter Ho Davies - a short(er) craft book that discusses the different aspects of revision, bringing to light a few different strategies as well as exploring high-profile authors who have revised their own works over the years. It's incredibly motivating (if not very slightly winding in the prose).

Other:

The Shit No One Tells You About Writing (podcast) - a general discussion about the ins and outs of writing and publishing. There are high-profile guests, as well, and it's great to put it on in the background while you clean/cook/etc :) It's on Spotify, too.

useful websites for writers

hi everyone long time no see! at least it feels like that lol. i assembled a post with sources that i hope can help you with your writing! i know other accounts have done this sort of post before and i’ve always found a new website i didn’t know about that has been super useful. some of these are my recommendations and some of them come from you guys!

word hippo (free)

this website has saved my life countless times. it’s super easy to use: simply type your word in the search bar and you’ll get copious amounts of synonyms! you can also look up antonyms, translations, definitions, prononciations, and conjugations!! truly a writer’s saviour.

onelook thesaurus (free)

ever forgotten a very specific word, but it’s right on the tip of your tongue? onelook is super helpful for this! the first result isn’t always the one you’re looking for, but when you press enter you’ll get a bunch more suggestions in order of relevance. for example: if you type “shadow outline” into the search bar, the word “silhouette” will appear!

prowritingaid (premium $79/year)

i’ve never used this software before but it looks pretty useful. there is a free version that you can use online and edit 500 words at a time, but if you pay the wc is unlimited and you can integrate it into some writing softwares like ms word and google docs. it will break down your writing style, grammar, overused words, readability, and a lot of other stuff that i don’t know how to summarize haha. when you login there is a tutorial video that i would suggest watching!

dabble writer (free trial, then min. $10/month)

this one has different subscriptions with different features so i’ll just go over what the standard subscription includes ($15/month). another that i haven’t used before, but i think it’s essentially a writing software that allows you to outline and organize your storyboard and ideas within it. i feel like this would be practical for plotters, but for pantsers or plantsers like me (unless you’re a plotter-leaning-plantser) i doubt it would be worth it.

nameberry / behindthename (free)

i have two strategies for coming up with names: smashing my keyboard or browsing on nameberry! it’s basically just a baby name website that provides all kinds of different names. the forums are also pretty helpful if you’re looking for help naming a character! behindthename is a website that delves deeper into name definitions which can be pretty cool.

fantasynamegenerator (free)

i love this site so much! it is a godsend, especially for fantasy writers!! it has name generators for literally anything imaginable that needs a name. amusement parks, species, riddles, weapons, prisons, and so much more!

nanowrimo (free)

nano is a word count tracker, most commonly used in the month of november, which is national novel writing month (nanowrimo). the challenge during november is to write 50,000 words, but you can set your own goal to whatever wc you want, whenever you want! it’s a great way to stay motivated to write and achieve your goals!

Does anyone know of a website that tells you what common punishments are for different crimes?

This is a very typical problem for people who write stories, so I'm sure there must be some site out there for stuff like this 😂

To be specific, I need to know what a sentence would be if someone was found guilty for killing three people, but they were under 18 when they committed the crime.

For how long would they typically be in prison?
