Good Morning Georgia! Showers & thunderstorms will be redeveloping later this morning and early this afternoon. Majority of Georgia, particularly all of SWGA, is in the Slight Risk category for this system. The greatest risk for severe weather will occur later this morning & this afternoon. Damaging wind gusts will be the greatest hazard, hail, & a weak tornado or two cannot be ruled out. However the threat for that is not likely. This does not mean you should not be weather ready! Anytime there is a possibility for a tornado, no matter how small, you should always be prepared & weather ready just in case! Timing for the greatest risk for our area is in between 2pm-5pm today, but expect to see scattered showers prior to then. This is not going to be the end of the rain though! As we enter the 2nd day of Hurricane Preparedness Week today we look at developing a evacuation plan. In most cases evacuations in SWGA are not because of storm surge, but because of flooding and deadly winds associated with the hurricane. It is important that if you live in a flood prone area or in a unstable home such as a mobile home that flooding and high winds can be a deadly situation. Hurricane Preparness Week Day 2 During evacuations think of your pets! Not all shelters will allow pets so now is a good time to think of possible places you can take your pets for shelter. If you must go to a shelter during a hurricane here is what you may want to bring: What to Pack Note: You should prepare for at least a three-day stay. So bring a three-day supply of the below items. – Food and water: The recommended amount of water is about one gallon per person per day. As for food, bring non-perishable canned or packaged food. – Cash and credit/debit cards: Bring all necessary credit and debit cards and be sure to grab cash in the event the cards don’t work. – Clothes: Bring a complete set of clean clothes and shoes. – Bedding/blankets: Most shelters have cots or beds available for evacuees. Some offer bedding and blankets, but to be on the safe side, you should pack your own in addition to a pillow. Sleeping bags and air mattresses work, too. – Personal hygiene items: Deodorant, soap, sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste and all other necessary items. Some shelters offer showers, but that may not be an option at most. – Medications: Bring any and all important medications with you, as it’s not concrete how long you’ll be at the shelter. – Games/entertainment: Board games, books, cards, puzzles, iPads, etc. Bring these to pass the time at the shelter until the storm passes. – First-aid kit: Be sure to bring a first-aid kit along with you in case of an emergency.
