I am sharing a few things I have learnt about writing in the past few months. And I hope it is helpful .
Now keep in mind that most of these tips are NOT my own, I had read them somewhere. The only problem is, that I can't remember where lol! So I can't give credits to anyone. Let's keep the source unknown So here it is --
Tips:
1) Use short sentences. Maybe 5-8 words at most i.e in a single sentence. (If you place them in between other lengthy sentences, those short sentences act like buffers :))
2) Use 'he said' or 'she said' instead of 'replied' 'answered' 'hissed' 'warned' and so on. Trust me, it makes writing dialogues a bit more easy that way
3) Give precise descriptions and give them where they are necessary. You don't need to describe a wall if it doesn't have any meaning to the MC (main character)
4) Look for repetition in a paragraph. You might have explained one sentence in multiple ways in that paragraph.
5) Never ever forget what your characters looks like, be it the main character or secondary characters. Always remember the eye and hair color of that character. Or best yet, write it all down, so you don't forget
6) Don't start the story with an alarm clock scene or a dream scene (this was mentioned in the previous link I had posted.) Follow it !
7) The mirror scene is a big no-no. Don't have the first chapter with a scene where the character describes herself/himself as she/he looks into the mirror.
8) You need to answer all the questions when you put your character in a particular situation. Why is she there? What led to such a situation? Who was responsible? Was it important? Should you torture the character more? If so, than why?
9) Keep a balance between the heavy/brief descriptions and dialogues in your book/novel. It shouldn't be too much or too less dialogue. Try and strike a balance
10) Lastly, you have to ENJOY what you write. Be it a story, a poetry or just a plain diary entry. You're writing it, because you want to, not because someone said so. You have to find your own stories interesting. Only then will your readers truly enjoy your story along with you !
I do hope this was helpful. If I do come up with more tips, I will edit this post. Also if you have any tips then by all means share it in the comments section below and I will add them here - Sanya
