Sorry, I'm going to continue gushing over WSQKsync
I didn't really buy the whole every season syncing up theory because even though there were some good matches, I felt it was like just a bit too much work. And so far I hadn't seen anything that mad me go "Yeah, this can't be a coincidence" (a lie actually, but I tend to be pessimistic). But this convinced me otherwise because it's such an absurdly minute detail:
This is Material Girl playing and the lyrics literally go "I just walk away" when El leaves. And then as pointed out the "Some boys try, and some boys lie" as Mike kisses her. Like holy shit. They really did that, huh? (And I'm not even going to talk about the fact that Material Girl was written in irony which - to Madonna's annoyance - got over everyone's head and was misunderstood as praise for materialism [= mileven = love at first sight parody]. I'm not even going to talk about the fact that is serves as a reminder of the Material Girl scene in the show in which Max helped El discover that she's more than Mike's boyfriend. I'm not even going to talk about how it contrasts Angel, the only other Madonna song on WSQK if I remember correctly.)
The level of genius it takes to even come up with this shit. Giving the entire show a different meaning, RECONTEXTUALISING, through music out of everything with the answer right before our eyes.
And then it being the WSQK radio which I know so many of us loved and listened to every day - the WSQK radio getting this insane pay-off: It's not just the radio from the show that you can listen to, it's a new way to watch the show.
And it's so much more amazing because we KNOW these songs, we've been listening to these for weeks. To me, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" was a Byler song and "Looking for a girl like you" was a Mike song and "We meet again" was a Henry song - and then hearing these songs in exactly these contexts hits harder than any edit could. And then other songs like "Angel" or "Never tear us apart" that I imagined for other characters but that were used in such a clever fitting way, giving the whole song another new reading.
All the c/g theories were so insanely good that I just wasn't expecting that the real thing could keep up but - this just makes me so happy.
