The American Women’s Voluntary Services began operations on January 4, 1942 at Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street. They ran a mobile kitchen serving hot drinks, doughnuts, and sandwiches to all men in uniform. This being the '40s, cigarettes were handed out, too. Some of the first “customers” are shown taking advantage of the free service.

WVS Surgical Training Course, Thailand 8 spays and 5 castrates down! It's been an intense couple of weeks with the pups in Thailand and the learning curve has been as steep as the north face of Everest. Thanks to all the incredible vets and nurses at the International Training Centre, I now have the confidence to anaesthetise, monitor and recover patients, take charge of drug administration, and perform basic sterilisation surgeries on my own. The street dogs of Thailand were a delight to work with and so full of personality and life. WVS is a truly inspirational organisation that I am proud to have been a part of. Until next time!

WVS Surgical Training Course, Thailand Final surgery of the course complete and I now feel confident performing an orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy solo! Mission accomplished.

WVS Surgical Training Course, Thailand Shelter Day 🐾 My surgery buddy Milly and I spent the day at the WVS Care for Dogs shelter, where we met street puppy Jolly. The little pup had been hit by a motorbike which snapped her metacarpals and left her right foreleg in a bad way. She didn’t seem to be in any pain, but still required urgent treatment. We immediately cleaned the wound (which was in surprisingly good condition) and administered antibiotics. Donations to Worldwide Veterinary Service funded her scapulectomy, which was a huge success. The following morning, Jolly was up to her usual puppy tricks and seemed completely unfazed by her missing leg.
