hi !! just wanted to pop in and say i absolutely adore your art style !! i was wondering, as someone new to using procreate as my main art software, do you have any tips for people who want to learn how to properly shade/render art and what brushes you yourself would use for that? sorry to bother but im just a little lost atm and it's almost impossible to find the guidance im looking for elsewhere. but anyway yeah -- hope you're having a good day/night !!

Not sure I can give you the answers you're looking for since I wouldn't say I'm necessarily the best one at shading and rendering in particular - but here's how I get around it lol

For shading:

Layer modes/effects are pretty much my best friend, for shading especially. Multiply for shadows of course, and then Screen, Colour Dodge etc for lights. What I do most of the time is select my shading layer, invert it, then (on a new layer!) fill it in a bright orange/yellow or whatever my lighting colour is, and then set that layer to screen/colour dodge/one of the other brightening effects..it just adds an extra layer of contrast in brightness and colour than the multiply shading layer on its own.

Other than that I like to put down harsh (cel shading) down first, then reduce the opacity and use the eraser tool at a low opacity to carve out light areas in the shadows (both soft airbrush and hard but textured brushes) I only blur the shadows lightly in some areas.

For rendering:

Basically don't be afraid to just draw over your piece to add details. You don't have to include everything in the sketch or lineart right away. In fact one of my fav parts is just adding one final layer on top over everything and add details that way!

I also like to use texture layers (set to overlay), usually just a simple grain.

(I dont render that much...my pieces aren't very detailed if you really look at them 😭)

For brushes:

The brush I use most of the time (the one I use for lineart) is one I downloaded somewhere years ago once and modified to be more textured i think (it's honestly just a pixely mess tho, not sure I can really recommend it in good faith).

Other than that I pretty much just use the basic procreate ones (The new ones are great!).
