ok so there’s a lot going on with the muslim pro app right now so i decided to compile it all in one post for my muslim siblings so they know what’s happening, and for all of you who want to support us.
first off, i’m gonna put a summary here (it’s at the end as well), so you know approximately what’s up:

it’s a whole clusterfuck so let’s get into it
so vice reported that the u.s. military is buying location data from two muslim apps, the muslim pro app and the muslim mingle app (a dating app). you can read the article here if you’d like to, i’m about to give you a concise version of it and other articles i read that i’ll link continuously or below this post
so basically, the company of bitsmedia, which developed the muslim pro app, had contracts with several data partners, including x-mode, which is a data broker (=a company that buys or collects user data). data brokers usually work in a way that the app would incorporate a script from the company and the script will just do what it’s programmed to do - send specific data to the data broker. the exact same thing happened here. except pretty much illegally, since when you download both of these apps, there is no privacy alert about your data being collected nor sold to the army.
motherboard downloaded both muslim pro and muslim mingle and observed that the app repeatedly sent the exact geolocation coordinates, the name of the wifi network the device was connected to, and information about the type of device. motherboard uncovered that x-mode was selling the obtained data to the u.s. army. their report was confirmed by both x-mode and the army, as well as u.s. senator ron wyden.
the reasoning behind the army’s purchase of the data is frankly ridiculous, and i quote (source):
“Our access to the software is used to support Special Operations Forces mission requirements overseas,” Navy Commander Tim Hawkins was quoted as saying. “We strictly adhere to established procedures and policies for protecting the privacy, civil liberties, constitutional and legal rights of American citizens.”
this raises several questions:
what mission requirements overseas?
what do the obtained data have in common with the rights of american citizens?
why are you invading the privacy of your own muslim citizens to protect all american citizens?
obviously, the possible answers could point to possible monitoring and targeting muslim minorities in western countries.
x-mode also tried to defend themselves, quoting again (source):
“X-Mode licenses its data panel to a small number of technology companies that may work with government military services, but our work with such contractors is international and primarily focused on three use cases: counter-terrorism, cyber-security and predicting future COVID-19 hotspots,” X-Mode told the online magazine.
it is maybe worth mentioning that x-mode did an illegal screening of facebook data a few years ago as a “counter-terrorism” action.
but now onto what the bitsmedia (muslim pro) management has said about this.
firstly, they denied everything. when the whole drama was uncovered, they said the report was incorrect and untrue (they did not specify which part of it), but they also said they are breaking contracts with all their data partners including x-mode. they specified that they started working with x-mode only recently (four weeks before the incident).
it is very shady.
another thing worth mentioning is that x-mode has collected and sold data from a few other apps, such a craiglist app (a rather popular one, with 5 million downloads), a step counter app and a weather app as well. the interesting thing about this is that although these have quite a bit of downloads, it is pretty much incomparable to the muslim pro app, which has more than 98 million downloads across several platforms.
