Xibala
Three “canon” Gods of Death that are much more likely to be Bwonsamdi’s boss, than the Lich King.
(that comment physically hurt me so much I needed to make this post)
In no particular order.
-Mueh’Zala.
A Farraki Loa, makes an appearence on the series of novels “Traveler” and on the same stones that speak about Kimbul, another Farraki Loa that you can find in Zandalar. There’s a shrine dedicated to him in Zuldazar, on Farraki territory, so far. He is described as a formless shadow, although he can take different forms, and is referenced as the Loa of Death, Father of sleep, Son of Time and the Night’s friend. It is very possible that, just like in greek mythology with Thanatos and Hades, Mueh’Zala is the Loa of Death and Bwonsamdi the Loa of the Dead.
-Xibala.
Ancient Devilsaur (the first devilsaur), and Mother of Rezan. Mentioned in the questzone of the same name. You can actually see that what would appear to be a small hill, is the resting place of her bones. Feared by the Zandalari, there are many stories of how she would bring terrible deaths to her victims. Her name appears to be a derivation of Xibalba, the name in Mayan culture used to refer to the realm of the dead. If she is Rezan’s mother, there’s a possibility that she was a Loa/wild God, and thus capable of influencing current events and taking actions beyond her death.
-Helya.
Although on the surface you could say she is not related to the Loa, we have to remember that Wild Gods come from normal creatures blessed by Titan Keeper Freya. So, for one, their power has Titan origins. Second, Helya wasn’t always the creature we met in Legion; originally, she was a Titanforged “witch” that could create “pocket realms”. That’s how the titans sealed away the Elemental Lords into the elemental planes, and why the Halls of Valor and Hellheim are in different planes from our own. We know that the Emerald Dream and the *Shadowlands are also different planes from the one we inhabit in, created by the Titans. And while the Emerald dream is associated with life, the shadowlands is associated with Death.
If she had a hand in the creation of these realms as well, it would made sense if she was the one that gave Bwonsamdi (and maybe Mueh’Zala) the power to have influence on the sadowlands, and thus over the dead and souls that end there. Thanks to current quests, we also know that she is far from gone.
*Remember, the Shadowlands is the place you see as a ghost in game, and the Spirits you can talk to to get a quick ress, were once Helya’s Val’kyrs, that decided not to follow her or Odin when she escaped from him and created Helheim.
the literal SECOND Xibalba appeared on screen at the thearter I knew he'd turn out to be the kind of villain that I really like
when he said "care to make a wager?" I was almost tempted to rest my hands in my face and stay like that for the rest of the movie
but when he asked manolo what his worst nightmare was and got the answer out of him just by LOOKING INTO HIS EYES I ALMOST JUMPED UP OUT OF MY SEAT AND LEFT THE THEATER
LIKE THE CHARACTERISTICS BETWEEN XIBALA AND A CERTAIN ***SOMEONE*** WERE SO SIMILAR I HAD TO BITE DOWN ON MY LIP TO PREVENT MYSELF FROM SCREAMING
