“I Want One of Those New York Hats You Get at Topshop”
So far, the U.K. has been more amazing than I could have ever dreamed of. My roommates are sick as hell. Contrary to what everyone told me before leaving, the milk is good. And it doesn’t actually rain ALL the time. To be honest, the Leeds vibe reminds me of Halifax. Lots of students, too many hip coffee shops, and lots of people wearing baseball hats.
Lots of people wearing baseball hats?! I thought England was the land of soccer football and rugby. I know Derek Jeter was a hottie. And I could also go so far to accept that The Sandlot was a pivotal childhood movie even to the Brits! But could a baseball babe and The Great Bambino really have enough clout to influence the rise of a baseball revolution across the pond?!
I came to this realization while out shopping with my friend who is from Australia. We were browsing a FCUK when this conversation took place:
George: I want a New York hat
Me: A what?
George: A New York hat.
Me: *blank stare*
George: You know, I want one of those New York hats they sell at Topshop. You know, with the N and Y on it.
Me: Like a Yankees hat?!
George: I donno? Is that what it is?
Maybe Empire State of Mind did have more influence other than making Generation Y-ers want to feel like champions...
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not going to claim to be a HUGE diehard baseball fan. I do not know the batting average for every player in the American League and I get confused with the designated hitter rule when there is an Interleague game. But I follow the Blue Jays as much as I can (when the games don’t start at 1am) and wear my Jays hat with Canadian pride. It’s not that there is anything wrong with Europeans wearing an MLB cap, I just find it so strange. Like it everyone in Halifax decided to start wearing this:
^ I’ll bring home British chocolate to the first person who tells me what sport and team that hat represents.
I don’t know if there is really a point to this rant, more so this is just something I’ve observed since moving here. Maybe this is the start of something. Maybe the increasing popularity is the gentle whisper before the band takes the stage! (I don’t think that is a real expression at all, but it painted a nice picture, don’t ya think!?)
I suppose, if I could have it my way, I would love to see more people wearing Jays hat. A lady did smile at me once on the bus when I was wearing mine. She was either flirting with me, having a seizure, or maybe she was also a fellow Canadian, who was sick of seeing Yankee hats all over the city.
