With trepidation I toe open the door of 2022

I was just looking over my posts over the past year and got to my summary of 2020, in which I implored 2021 to at least TRY to be better in the tags.

Well. I think it TRIED. In a gold star “You tried!” sort of way. In a flying by jumping off the roof with cardboard wings sort of way.

Thinking back, it’s definitely been a year. I want to say that it was better than last year but I feel like the good evened out with the bad in the end. We get vaccines and things start to get better...and then we get variants and it goes downhill. I get an opportunity to travel to New York...for family reasons that Really Aren’t Great.

But let’s talk summaries!

Some personal stats: --I started tracking the books I read in March, and according to that list I read at least 33 books this year, which I’m pretty proud of! I had a nice binge at the very end thanks to being off but hey, if it makes rooms on my shelves I’ll take it. --I sent out 35 story submissions this year to various publications. I sent out the last one last night after two weeks of pushing HARD to get a story together for an anthology call (I had written a draft over the previous two months, then in the process of the second draft realized it had Major Problems and I was better off starting over which SUCKED but I think this second version is better). I had precisely one acceptance, which is my first fiction publication, so that’s pretty cool! --I completed seven knitting projects, including a wrap inspired by Monty Python and the Holy Grail. --I traveled out of state precisely once, the aforementioned trip to New York. There were a couple of smaller trips in-state but otherwise I’ve pretty much been here.

Other things that happened this year: --Thanks to the events leading to the aforementioned trip to New York I have somehow acquired the hobby of fixing up antique sewing machines, Singer Featherweights to be precise. I really need to write up a bigger post about this because lemme tell ya it came REALLY out of left field for me. --I attended multiple writing classes, including Cat Rambo’s six week short story workshop, which was really neat and I met some cool folks through. --I made bagels and cinnamon rolls for the first time and good gods I want a cinnamon roll now WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. --Eien started a new job, and while it has its own brand of ups and downs it is overall in a MUCH better position than where he was previously, especially work-life balance-wise. --I continued taking Japanese, which I still enjoy, but HOT DIGGEDY it is hard. I’m finding short form, at least for me, complicates things to a huge degree. I also think I achieved a second language student milestone by accidentally incapacitating my teacher with laughter by trying to say one thing but ending up saying something else that was Very Much Not What I Was Trying To Say. --Got my passport renewed I AM SO READY TO TRAVEL AGAIN ON MANY LEVELS.

Things that are coming up next year: --My lab moves across campus to a very shiny new building. I have very mixed feelings about this, the stress of moving aside. The building is really nice, but it’s at a more isolated part of campus and works under a different work paradigm with a lot of shared space and I’ll no longer have a personal private space where I can take my mask off if I need to, which really sucks. But I’ll have windows. I’m VERY looking forward to windows. Oh, and no longer having to brave the traffic circles where I got rear ended last year on a daily basis. --I VERY VERY VERY TENTATIVELY might be going to Ireland. It really depends on if my boss decides to hold a workshop there or not and what’s going on virus-wise. I REALLY hope this’ll happen. My entire Irish experience right now consists of an overnight stay at the Dublin airport and noting Irish grass at 2 in the morning. Oh, and a massive breakfast. --4th Street again? Maybe? Pretty please? --Possibly also following Eien on one of his work trips to Vancouver? --More baking, more knitting, more Japanese, more writing, more submitting. I’m hoping I can get into Cat’s advanced short story workshop, but we’ll see how things go.

So there we are. I don’t know about you all, but I’m going to close out this year by making fondue. Because after this year, nothing soothes the soul like a bowl of bubbling hot cheese.

Hanari's 2014 Cosplay Roundup

I actually had a pretty good time this year, I learned a lot of new things and got to meet some awesome people and walk home with a bunch of cool props by a bunch of cool propmakers.

Of course this year I wouldn't have been able to do any of this on my own. if it wasn't for my friends helping me along I wouldn't have gotten as many things done as I did, and I certainly wouldn't have been able to get any of these wonderful shots!

I want to thank and shoutout all of the people who've helped me this year.

I want to give a shoutout to Franky, Jeremiah, and Angel, my three photographers who managed to get some of the awesome shots above and some beautiful shots throughout my conning this year.

I also want to give a HUGE thanks to both JD Builds and Devin for the construction of all of my props for the year, from Fishbones and Pow pow and Zap to Opal's Bow and several guns, I couldn't have been able to have as much fun as I did this year without them and their help and assistance.

And I want to give an even bigger shoutout to Ashley, Carrie, Willy, and Alex for being the best friends I could ask for and for being supportive of me and just really great friends in general this year. I wouldn't have been able to get through a lot of stuff without you guys.

Next year it's all uphill from here! I have so much more planned and I can't wait to blossom and burst onto the convention scene, even moreso that now.
