What a shitty day yesterday had been.
You had woken up much too late for you're boring job, that you (already) had no desire to go too, and the stress of getting ready without time did definitely not help with that. The only thing motivating your body to move, was the thought that tomorrow was the weekend.
When you arrived at the gray building, you lovingly called 'the fortress of doom' (while complaining to you're friends about it), you're mean (and disturbingly also sexist) boss started to scream at you. Who did you think you are to just come in late, everybody here was able to do what they're job required, why should you be an exception, where you on you're period or something?
You wanted to scream at him, punch him, not care what the consequences are and cry you're eyes out at the same time. And yeah, you had gotten you're period yesterday, but why did he even care, my god, he can go fuck himself. What a creep.
But you just shook you're head instead, swallowed all the insults you had collected since day one of working there, pushed back the tears that were threatening to spill, sat down at you're desk and started you're work. You definitely needed a new job. One more week like this and I will be going insane or get a burnout. Probably both.
And of course you're day couldn't even get the chance to get better when working there. You had to stay, past you're normal working hours, to do some shitty paperwork for you're boss because apparently he couldn't do it himself.
Just as you thought you could finally escape this horrible day while leaving 'the fortress of doom', you're phone vibrated in you're pocket. Annoyance was the only thing you were capable of feeling, while picking it out of the too deep pockets of you're jacket, and opening it to see what and who still dared to bother you even after you had gotten off work.
You're mother.
"We selled the house. You're stuff was outside already since you moved and we know you would have made a fuss about it, so we didn't inform you before. Sorry honey."
You stared at the message in disbelief, put you're phone back in your pocket and started walking, and walking, till you're fingers burnt from the chilly night air. You didn't notice how cold it had gotten when you finally arrived at the old ruin, the place where you and you're siblings had played almost everyday before the world had turned to shit.
The worst thing was, that you couldn't even get mad at them for selling the house. They took away the last place you felt fully comfortable in, where pleasent memories were ingrained in everything, the furniture, the pictures—hell, even the wallpaper. But only because they couldn't afford it anymore.
You're family wasn't poor, no. But the house was big, and since you're father had passed away, there wasn't much income anymore to help with maintaining it.
Finally, the tears spilled. Holding back the entire day hadn't been easy, and that message had been the final drop. You just sat down on the cold, dusty —but at least dry floor, in a random room of the big building and cried. And although you felt incredibly let down by the whole entire world, crying did feel relieving.
The next morning, you realised that you had lost you're phone charm (which normally wasn't that important to you, but after the message from yesterday, you desperately clinged to every normality that you could still have). You hurried to get dressed and hastily ate something before heading out to search for you're little charm in the old ruin.
Sitting on the cold ground yesterday had made you feel a little sick, but you knew it wouldn't stick for long. You bundled yourself up in the thickest winter jacket you could find, and headed out.
Frank knew it would've been better if he hadn't gone to his safe house today, especially after the sudden appearance of you yesterday. But he couldn't just change his routine and most importantly, he couldn't just sit somewhere and rot away without doing something productive.
So there he was, setting up the targets to train his aim.
And so where you. You weren't setting up targets, no, you didn't even know how to shoot. But you did have a target. You're goddamn phone charm.
He heard a noise, flashbacks from yesterday making him turn around quick. But you weren't crying, you didn't even look half as miserable as yesterday. You looked shocked, but who wouldn't. A man, a big one at that, standing in the room you had wanted to go in, gun in hand, ready to shoot. And you knew him. From the news, from neighbours murmuring about his doings.
You weren't against him, had lived long enough to see how bad the world could be. But seeing him now, here, with a gun? That was different.
The first thing that came to mind: Run. So you ran, but not fast enough. He had you locked against the wall, pressing the smell of old cement and dust in you're nose.
"I'm sorry, sorry, didn't know that someone's here," you pressed out, trying to get the air back into you're lungs.
"Why are you here." He rumbled, and you swear you could've almost felt his breath on your ear if it hadn't been this cold. His voice didn't go up at the end, it was a demand for answers, almost a threat.
"I just," your spit on the wall made your face scrunch up in disgust "I lost my phone charm somewhere in this building." You tried to calm you're hectic breathing and turned you're head a little. At least he hasn't killed me yet.
There was a pause before he spoke again.
"A phone charm?" There was almost something like disbelief, maybe even amusement, in his voice. But his grip on you didn't loosen.
"Yeah." You nod, you're cheek scraping against the cold wall. One of his hands let go of you, searched the pockets of you're big jacket, finding you're phone.
And he saw it. The little peace of broken string attached to it, which definitely lost its main peace. His hold on you slightly loosened, letting you breathe properly again.
"You going to tell somebody?" His voice was gravelly. You could only guess he ment, telling someone that he had been here, so you answered accordingly. "No," you tried to turn you're head even more, searching for his eyes, "No." His eyes met yours for a short moment, then focused back down to the phone in his hand.
Okay, you've got this, he's just a man. Every man has one weakness, right?
The adrenaline in you're body made you act, he wasn't expecting it. Body turning, your foot went straight between his legs and you ran. Ran faster than ever before, down the stairs (thank god you didn't trip, that would've been you're downfall, litterally) outside, in the direction of you're apartment complex. And for some reason, you managed to put distance in between him and you. You realised how incredibly dumb your reaction was, while catching you're breath inside your apartment. If this hadn't worked out exactly like it had, you could've easily been dead by now.
And he still had you're phone, he now knew who you are. And he now knew where you live. But something about you stopped him from going straight into your apartment to stop this whole thing for good. It wasn't like he didn't have an appropriate weapon, or that he wasn't strong enough. There was just something he couldn't explain, making him act different than usual.
Maybe it was the fact that he had seen you at you're lowest, or that you had come back, just for some random trinket that had embellished you're phone. Or, that he somehow believed you when you said you wouldn't tell anyone.
And of course, killing you wouldn't really be compatible with his values.
He sighed, and when he arrived back in his own apartment, he got to work to get every important information from you're phone that he could possibly need.
You were a nuisance.
At first, because you threatened to take his safe house from him.
Now, because you and you're damn little phone charm wouldn't leave his mind, the little memories that he had of you, now stronger than before.
I hope you liked this chapter, I'm sorry for any grammar or spelling errors!
I tried to make it realistic and made the reader fight back, I don't know if it worked. (;ŏ﹏ŏ)
And also! I think I want this to play in the 2000's because I adore flip phones!!
(constructive feedback is more than welcome)
Love y'all ♡
