The way that I can’t even go and read books on writing craft anymore without getting angry at the way that Stranger Things was fucked over by the Duffers.
I just want to yell at clouds.
I’m currently re-reading “20 master plots” by Ronald B. Tobias, which is a basic writing craft book on how story works and what to look out for and …
The Duffers ignored essentially most of the basics every beginner learns
(That’s not a new revelation, but rereading it after a long time and seeing it all laid out on the page just reinforces how much they fucked up.)
Fiction is not real life. Real life is chaotic and stuff happens out of the blue life.
Everything must make sense and follow the internal rules you as the author created. And you have to be consistent and not just start playing god by bending stuff to your will.
Lucas is completely right that we shouldn’t believe in coincidence anymore because there shouldn’t be coincidences in a story that was well crafted.
Everything that happens in a fictional story should be causally related to the overall plot, even if it looks casual, heck, especially if it looks casual — think of Chekhov’s fucking gun they used to shoot themselves in the foot.
And then the the eighth section in "The Lowest Common Plot Denominators" is called "Make Sure Your Central Character Performs the Central Action of the Climax."
The essence of plot is to ask a question.
And this part uses Cyrano de Bergerac as an example, where the question is, will he ever succeed in telling Roxanne he loves her?
The goal of the plot is to answer this simple fucking question in the climax.
That Stranger Things answered the question not with Cyrano winning his Roxanne, but with the fucking painting not being addressed at all, is just so infuriating.
Fine, maybe the answer they wanted to give us was “oh sadly, he failed” but then at least he should’ve tried.
Instead of, well, crickets…
