GUESS WHO JUST BEFRIENDED ANOTHER WASP!!!!!!!!! I THINK SHE WAS A QUEEN SHE WAS SO BIG AND PRETTY!!!!! I JUST PUT SOME JUICE ON ME AND SHE CLAMBERED ON MY HAND TO DRINK IT

AFTER I PUT HER OUTSIDE SHE FLEW BACK ONTO MY HAND THEN ONTO MY GLASSES BEFORE SHE FLEW OFF!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING GIRL!!!

Yellowjackets actually use visual cues when determining threat response. So if you're careful and move slowly around them, and keep your distance, they'll stay really docile!

Back from an extremely short camping trip to Lake Itasca. Had to leave out a lot of my regular habits (long solitary trail walks and plein air painting) but had a good time with friends and new people, as well as tried out new activities: rented a kayak despite never having used one and it turns out I’m not terrible at it. Went up the fire tower there, saw an even better than usual view and managed to not lose my cool due to fear of heights.

Also made “friends” with plenty of critters. I’m sure the wood froglet couldn’t wait for us to stop admiring it, but the yellowjackets and honeybees were VERY interested in us and were convinced we were protein/hiding very tasty sugary goodness. Yes I let them land on my face. I’m entertained and unharmed. (Yellowjackets and I have always been on exceptionally good terms.)

Also first time seeing a “water scorpion,” (ranatra fusca?) that I initially thought was a confused stick insect. It hitched a ride in our car but flew off on its merry way after I admired it for a bit.

Despite the lack of time to do proper on location painting, I did a quick study from a photo to ease my sorrow at having to leave too soon. I think it turned out quite well! (Improvement?!?) Will be doing more, I have plenty of material to use.

Putting this under read more in case cause it does involve a dead bug’s head not connected anymore

So basically I just found a wasp’s head earlier when I knew it definitely wasn’t there before and even had to check to see if it’s a yellowjacket wasp (at least I believe so with quick research) because the yellow look very dull when I tried to investigate closely to see if that’s in fact a bug head and saw it’s suspiciously wasp shaped. Like literally it popped out of nowhere, no clue where it came from like the wasp did not flew into the place before any one of us killed the gal nor did we have any pets at all who’d somehow kill a wasp

Just poofed into existence

Only reasonable explanation is that my mom probably walked out to our balcony to see how heavy the rain is and must have stepped on it without realizing

Also the head didn’t have eyes or antennae at all and judging by how dull it’s in colors as well as decapitated, something probably caught and killed the wasp then the head is just left there for a while
