Personally, I think it’s a form of child abuse to get your child a pet and then neglect that animal to death. It’s definitely a form of animal abuse but it is also a horrible thing to do to a kid. This is an especially common phenomenon with ‘indoor-outdoor’ cats. Some guy buys his 10 year old daughter a kitten so she’ll actually want to see him on the weekend and then refuses to get it neutered, microchipped or vaccinated and lets it roam free, refusing to take it to the vet when it is inevitably badly wounded by another animal or hit by a car. I’m from a rural farming area where pet husbandry isn’t great and there are an abundance of puppies and kittens every year and I’ve heard horror stories from people who’s parents let them get a puppy and then refused to take the dog to a veterinarian when it had serious medical event, just let their crying, sobbing, traumatized 14 year old watch their beloved dog waste away of an intestinal blockage with no way to get them care since they weren’t the legal owner, couldn’t drive and couldn’t afford treatment. Money isn’t even the primary issue for this particular type of evil fucking parent, if they cared about the animal or their kid’s wellbeing, they’d explain that they had to surrender the animal so it could get treatment or they’d take it to be euthanized so it didn’t suffer. Nope. Watch your beloved dog die for days.

Ive known something was wrong with my cat for weeks, my parents didnt listen and called me crazy. He has severe tooth decay and plaque buildup. He has most likely been in pain for days and i dont know when my parents will take him to the vet. I have no money, no car and i am completely incapable of helping him. I will never get a cat again. I will never get another pet until i am in my own home.
