*slow clap* The pacing is also completely wrong in the 2005 version, but then again, there’s not much right in it. It’s pretty, but soulless.

How do you chase a skunk away? Isn’t that a little… dangerous? I tried buying Stella a catnip plant once and I came home a few days later to a squashed plant. He had tried rolling around in the pot or something. It worked a little too well LOL

Yes, well, that’s what I thought the first time we saw the skunk. But apparently they don’t just spray automatically--they sort of warn you. And this one tends to run off when we open the door. 

I think planting catnip is a lost cause--how do they ever grow it without cats rolling around on it and squashing it?!

Oh, good idea! This reply reminded me that we have a little bag of catnip. It is raining a little tonight, so after Widget had eaten a lot and Poppet had eaten a little and they’d left, I sprinkled some catnip in the beds in hopes they would smell it and decide to try out the beds. It worked! At least on Widget. I don’t know where Poppet went. Widget came back, ate Poppet’s leftovers, and then when all the wet food was gone he started sniffing around the beds. (Actually, when I left the door ajar to get the food to put out for him, he actually started to come in and I had to move quickly to prevent that!) He hopped into one of them and was licking up the catnip. I went to get my camera, but when I got back, the skunk had arrived (sigh) so I had to chase it away, and Widget ran off too (in the opposite direction). Oh well. Maybe he will try it again. The beds are in a pretty well-sheltered spot.

Thanks! The kitties make me happy every evening, even though I worry about how little Poppet eats and even though I am getting much less sleep because I’m spending so much time cat-gazing and trying to feed Poppet!

Oh man, same to all of this - although I don’t think I’ve seen most of Logan’s episodes since they first aired, so we’ll have to wait and see how I feel once I reach the college years.

What did you think of Boy Snow Bird? I just packed up all my books, but I'll try and remember for in couple of weeks :)

I really liked Boy Snow Bird to the point that right after I finished reading it I started another book by Helen Oyeyemi, White is for Witching, and unfortunately reading them both so close together made them blend a little in my mind. But I thought Boy Snow Bird was tremendously compulsive, and that it beautifully mastered the strange, detached language of fairy tales while also grounding the story very real and relevant history. I think my biggest struggle with it was the ending--both Boy Snow Bird and White is for Witching felt much more like novels about the journey rather than the destination so the so-so conclusions of the book didn’t detract from the experience (I’m planning on tracking down all of Oyeyemi’s other books) but it was a missed opportunity to end the book on its strongest note. I’d recommend the book strongly--have you read it or are you thinking about reading it? 

(My view here might be affected because I also just read Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad which was AMAZING AMAZING and also had an ending that seemed impossibly satisfying for a novel that, like Oyeyemi’s novels, I could see how the author was going to wrap everything up.)
