Pokeri’s not sure what she was expecting. She watches helplessly as Ben writhes in pain against his shackles. What’s happening with him? What’s causing this terrible suffering?

It hurts to watch. What could she possibly do? She wants to hold him, tell him everything’s going to be okay. Would that even help?

She reaches out to touch him... And mentally curses her impulsive flinching when he jerks against the restraints. What a coward.

Should she try again? He’s restrained. He can’t hurt you...

No. He won’t hurt you. Because he’s Ben! One of the sweetest people you know! This isn’t him... He’s only suffering! He’s the one being hurt! It’s not his fault! The least you can do is be there for him!

She reaches out to him again. “Ben...?” Her hands rest firmly on his shoulders (careful now, don’t touch the wounds!), fighting the urge to flinch back at his sudden movements. She must be strong for him! “Ben,” she says as soothingly as she could muster. “It’s me. Pokeri. You can make it through this, alright? You’re gonna be okay.”
