Chloe sat alone in the room. The house was quiet and empty. A year ago that would have been normal. Now it wasn’t. The silence was almost deafening. She preferred to hear screaming and yelling, running footsteps and overlapping voices, bumps and suspicious crashes. But there wasn’t that anymore. There wouldn’t be that anymore.
A year ago, her life revolved around Elijah Kamski. Now, she hardly saw him. Now she was alone.
And perhaps she could have returned to Belle Isle. Perhaps Elijah would have welcomed her back and helped her settle back in. Perhaps her sisters would have been comforting and kind towards the situation. Perhaps there was that option… but she didn’t want that option.
She didn’t want to return to her old life. As much as she had loved Elijah, she’d grown to love the kids more. She’d grown to love Corwin more. She’d grown her own little family, only to have it ripped away from her. And she couldn’t bear it.
She couldn’t bear the thought of continuing on without ever hearing Carlin play his violin, without hearing Claire sing, without combing her hand through Liam’s hair, without seeing Penny’s bright smile, without feeling Corwin’s warm embrace.
Without them, her life meant nothing anymore. She had no one to stay for. She’d lost them all, and lost a part of herself with each of them.
There was no hesitation. Her shirt discarded, her fingers found the slight crease of her pump regulator in the middle of her torso. With a quick twist and tug, she pulled out the cylindrical piece. Thirium dripped out of the opening and a warning message appeared in front of her eyes.
Time until shut down: 00:01:50
There should have been a sense of panic, an emotion overdrive of self preservation. But Chloe felt nothing. She hadn’t felt anything in a long time. Having slowly lost everything, she’d become numb. Yet, even without those feelings, she was far from being a machine again.
Time ticked away. She reached over at the bedside table and picked up a picture frame. She looked down at it and smiled. The smiling faces of her family looked back up at her. Tears blurred her vision and she clutched the photo close to her chest. Her eyes closed as the timer reached zero. A single tear fell as her system shut down, the last of their little family leaving the living.
Liam is dead

It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair!
He was ripped away from her. Her child. Her son. He was gone. It wasn’t fair. He didn’t deserve that. He didn’t deserve this.
And, somehow, Chloe couldn’t help but blame herself. Had she brought this upon them? Had she, in thinking she was keeping him safe, actually brought him into the light of danger?
Tears flowed and a wail had come from her lips. Chloe wanted to scream. She wanted to scream and cry until her voice processors burnt out, until she couldn’t make a sound anymore.
It felt as if a piece of her had been torn out. Her biocomponents, her wires, her thirium pump… her heart, gone. She felt empty. Eventually she stopped crying, though her eyes seemed to perpetually be watery and ready to spill tears.
She spent days locked away. Days in bed, curled up with Bear. She didn’t leave her side. It wasn’t clear who was in more pain, but they comforted each other. The others rarely entered the room. Carlin and Claire peeked in every so often. Penny entered and cuddled between Chloe and Bear. Elijah wasn’t allowed inside.
The house became quiet and dreary, like a storm cloud had enveloped the house.
It wasn’t fair. He was just a boy. He was her son. She would give anything to have him back, even if it meant taking his place.
Holiday (?) headcanon
it's not that the kids don't visit the family normally, but during the holidays, they tend to stay over more often. Chloe personally thinks that the kids like going over to Hank's just to play with Sumo (Bear also likes to go to play with Sumo). And really, Hank doesn't seem to mind having the kids in his house. They don't cause any trouble.
What does end up happening is a sudden shift in fashion choices. They come back to Chloe a day or two later in ridiculous outfits. Cheetah print pajama pants, Hawaiian shifts, tie-dye, various other animal print. Carlin is wearing that God awful banana shirt and Chloe very nearly shuts down.
It's Connor's fault, she's sure of it. Hank has a terrible fashion sense, but he doesn't care about it, nor would he go out of his way to dress Chloe's kids in the worst possible outfits. Connor, on the other hand, was the worst, and he would do that.
Corwin laughs about it, but Chloe knows he hates it just as much as she does. He's just laughing at her distress over it. He gets the kids to change, but the damn banana shirt stays.
At least Cassius would never do this. At least Cassius has his head on right. At least he has a fashion sense.
Chloe declares Cassius to be the superior rk unit because of this.
I had a series of thoughts last night, and I thought I would write out a drabble of a series of confrontations post Kamski Test ( completely out of order and not entirely linked to the same verses )
