Ustrasana. 💙 Camel pose admittedly hasn’t been a favorite heart opener of mine in the past. Which is saying something, because it’s rare I meet a heart opener I don’t like! 😊 This pose used to feel compressive in my low back. It left me feeling dizzy and nauseous coming out of the pose. When I learned to really lift up and expand my chest - take the pose out of my low back - it started to feel good. Then amazing, open and light. I engaged more through my legs and deep abdominals to support my low back, rather than collapsing into the lower lumbar curve. _ I’m quite sure I tried intense camel variations before my foundation was truly solid. I can assure you they didn’t feel good - my body wasn’t ready. Now, I love experimenting with camel variations. While challenging, they don’t hurt in a way that’s potentially harmful to my body. There’s no rush to go deeper. I find it really silly when my students shy away from yoga props. Everyone haul their yoga mats to studio but using blocks it against some rules. Yoga mat is also a prop. Good yoga mat can make your practice easier, safer more comfortable. Yoga blocks can support you as well. You can deepen the pose and modify as needed. I find stretches in the most basic poses with props and correct alignment. For example, using the blocks in the lizard pose the chest lifts and I get better hip flexor stretch in the back leg. So it’s all about exploration and modifying for your own unique practice. . . Like it.
