It was an accident, honestly. He had gotten complacent, uncharacteristically forgetful in his comfort. In retrospect, he should have seen this as an inevitability. Your spiritual awareness had become more sensitive over the years, first, in friendship, which became more over time. You had been living together for just over a year. He started to notice you react to things that other humans didn't. When there are spirits or demons nearby, more often than not. But he never had a reason to believe it had developed further than, say, Kuwabara when they first met. He had mentioned to Koenma that he'd need harder encoded correspondence to counteract the effects of your awareness. So when the tape came, he put it in the VCR right away.
You were reading in bed when you heard a strange sound from the sitting room. You tried to ignore it but soon found yourself straining to listen to what Shuichi was watching. It sounded like the radio when it's between stations, one barely louder than the other. The sound also sent the most curious shiver down your spine and made all the hair on your arms stand up. As if your body was detecting something your ordinary senses couldn't. It made your heart beat a bit faster. You slowly peeled yourself out of bed and quietly entered the hall.
"We need your expertise, Kurama. I know you said -zzzssst-" You heard from the TV as you approached the room. 'Kurama?' you thought. What was he watching? It sounded terrible. You stood in the open doorway of the sitting room. Shuichi was watching something that you couldn't quite perceive. It looked static, but sometimes you'd make out the faintest hints of a person's outline or splotches of blue or pink.
"There's some sort of disease of biological origin that is suspected to be demonic in nature-"
Your heart jumped. 'Demonic? What the fuck?' Your mind started to race but was also blank. You kept your breathing shallow, not wanting to make any noise that might interfere with your hearing.
"Experts on our end say that it's been made to affect humans in ways that make the Makai insects look like a kiddie ride at the fair," the garbled voice continued. The sound was clearing up the more you focused on it. "Again, I know we said you were off the hook, but we've exhausted our resources, and you're our last, best hope as a demonic plant expert." Another voice chimed in, a cool, female one. The screen filled with light pink and blue swirls. "Please, Kurama, consider it, at least."
The screen went blank. You stood in the doorway, frozen, and he didn't move either.
"Shuichi?" You cleared your throat and finally asked.
His heart clenched when he heard your voice; he twisted around in panic.
"What's going on?" You asked, "Who's Kurama?" Your scent gave away your anxiety and frustration. For the first time since he met you, he had no idea what to say.

After almost a year of dating, Kurama brought you back to his apartment, telling you there was something he wanted to show you. He sat you down on his couch and stood back to put plenty of space around him. With a deep breath, he closed his eyes.
The air in the room suddenly felt heavy and a fog danced across the room, obscuring your sight. It only lasted a few moments but it was long enough for anticipation to bubble through your veins. In Kurama’s place was a man standing proud with silvery white hair that seemed to glow in the limited light of the night. His amber eyes you knew you had seen before gleamed at you brightly. Youko.
You pulled yourself to your feet and slowly circled him, Youko’s tail swishing back and forth as his ears curiously twitched. His gaze followed you even as you stopped in front of him. You crossed your arms with an irritated pout and looked him up and down.
“This is just unfair.”
Youko tilted his head at you without a word. The only thing breaking his poker face was the confusion swirling deep in his eyes.
“You were already taller than me. Now this? That’s like... What, another foot added?” A smirk overshadowed your pout.
His shoulders shook as he burst out in laughter, having expected any response other than what you gave. He pulled at your arms to uncross them and bring you to him. His hug was still just as warm as it was in his human form, your face smooshed right above his abdomen. You weren’t even close to being tall enough to reach his shoulders.
You wrapped your arms around him as much as you could. “I’m happy you trust me enough to show me this side of you.”
His grip tightened a second before he pulled back enough to bend down and nuzzle his face in your hair.
“But seriously,” you huffed, “stop being so damn tall.”
Kinktober | Day 11 | Aftercare
Character - Yoko Kurama/Shuichi Minamino
Aftercare - The period of time after a scene in which partners attend to one another’s physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
“Would you like a glass of water?”
“Huh?”’
“I asked, would you like a glass of water?”
Oh, so she did hear him right the first time. Such a simple question sent her for a loop. [Name] sat up, pulling the duvet with her to cover her bare breasts. Her eyes locked with Kurama’s, who stared at her questionably as he waited for her to answer from the doorway.
“Uh, no thank you?”
His eyebrow quirked. Why did she answer with a question? “Are you sure? I wouldn’t mind giving you a massage. I can run you a bath. Would you like that?” His voice remained soft and gentle, just as he’d been with her during intercourse. Something about that made her heart flutter, reminiscing on the recent love making session.
The questions he asked were simple. They were common questions you asked your partner after the deed. But to [Name], by the look on her face, they were foreign, something she’s never heard before. And that’s when realization hit him. None of her past partner’s had ever treated her to basic standards like this.
[Name] snapped out her daydream, when the red haired boy waved his hand in front of her face with concern. Her face flushed out of embarrassment. She shook the lewd thoughts out of her mind, and nodded. “I-I guess.” He simply smiled, clasping his hands together with a nod. “Give me a moment to set it up for you, Princess.”
After spending a few moments setting up the bath, adding scented candles and bath salts to increase the calming atmosphere, Kurama went back into the room to retrieve her. [Name] had been mesmerized by the outside view in the window, not even noticing him as he stood and watched her.
“Beautiful, isn’t it? Japan truly does light up at night.”
The inquiry startled her, she jumped a bit. She simply motioned her head ‘yes’, and that warm smile re-appeared on Kurama’s face as he approached her. “Please, let me help you,” he said while extending his arm out. She grabbed onto him, and before she knew it, was being carried bridal style to the restroom. She nuzzled her head in his chest, taking in the smell of fresh sweat he still had on him.
The bathroom smelled like warm vanilla, and as he lowered her inside the tub, she noticed the bath salts and floating lavender in the water. He’d chosen the perfect temperature, her body quickly relaxed against the water, and she let out a deep sigh. She’d never known aftercare like this, or at all for the matter. Somehow she felt herself undeserving of this.
“Well, alright then. Let me know if you need anything.”
“Shuichi wait.”
With a blush on her cheeks and the twiddling of her fingers, she stared nervously down into the water. “Would you care to join me?”
Embracing the Seasons | 118 | You vs. Yul
Shuichi had the potential for anything in life — he could be outrageously wealthy, successful in his ambitions, and could quite likely woo any woman he set his eyes on.
However, none of that interested him. Or so he thought.
He longed for something more, something that sparked the thrill of adventure, purpose, and challenge.
He never could fathom how the call of the autumn wind would one day summon the side of him he left behind and bring to him a future, a love, worth protecting.
This is a wholesome and wistful account of Kurama, and how he finds a love so compelling that his world is shaken. He meets phantoms of his past, and the sacrifices he makes to keep his loved one safe forces him to confront the piece of his soul that is demon. Both Kurama and his beloved must overcome the darkness that threatens to destroy their future together.
