what’s your thoughts on the upcoming UK version of SNL?
I don’t mind the OG SNL ofc (in fact there’s a couple of sketches of the OG that I quite like), but honestly I’m quite excited for the UK version (tho I am British so I may be a bit biased on that lmao), but mostly cuz us Brits haven’t had much *mainstream* comedy sketch shows in a while now (tho thankfully there seems to be a bit of a sketch show revival going on atm, w/ examples such as “Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping”, among others), plus as I’ve mentioned in my previous ask, the main cast really promising frfr!!
(also, just out of curiosity, who’d your dream SNL UK guest host(s) be + why 👀👀?)
honestly, i think sketch comedy comes down to expectations: understanding at the get-go that you'll almost never have a 100% hit rate, how well you can stomach a miss (cringe levels can be high), whether you can accept sketch acting vs. comedy acting you see on tv & film, what you already know and enjoy about the comedians appearing. i don't know why people who typically don't like sketch — anything from madtv to big gay sketch show to mitchell & webb — tune into stuff like snl and expect to like it. it's a very specific form of comedy writing and performance, and it's not for everyone. and it requires an open mind and a lot of forgiveness 😅
i think the performers are a pretty strong bunch, and we also just got the details on the writing crew! there are a few people i'm not a massive fan of, but seeing names like al roberts, ellie fulcher, and joseph moore, among others, gives me even more optimism the show will be pretty quirky and silly! personally, i grew up on classic snl, fry and laurie, mitchell and webb — i'm very excited!!!
omg dream hosts..............i take these kinds of questions so seriously and i'm gonna be thinking about all of the people i forgot for the next week, but off the very tip top of my head..............
olivia colman, danny dyer, julie walters, daniel radcliffe — obviously. no explanation needed.
david jonsson — sorry he is my husband
dan stevens — he's a big comedy fan, and i love that he's the kind of actor who is down for all sorts of weird and wild roles. even some of his "dramatic" roles like, say, ich bin dein mensch had a comedic nuance to them that he walks the line of perfectly. and i miss him!!!
alex kingston — i know i'm a fucking whovian piece of shit but trust me she has all of the command and confidence to pull off sketch comedy specifically 👌
richard e. grant — apart from being a hilarious human being full stop, i think he would know exactly what to do with all of the silliness of sketch. like, total absurdity has never stopped him from smiling or playing along, and he's only getting better at that as the years pass. i just love him<3
helena bonham carter — if i'm correct she has never hosted snl! how is that possible when so much of her career could inspire amazing writing for this format specifically. we need her and her big hair!
daisy edgar-jones — i find her super charming, and i think it can take that kind of personality to draw out the forgiveness that sketch comedy often requires. and i think she'd have fun with it!
hugh bonneville — elite combo of being an incredibly talented actor and a down-to-earth good hang. he also loves taking the piss out of himself. his episode of graham norton with matt & bill is still iconic like ten years later. get him on to promote paddington 4!!!!!!
other middle-to-old age white guy actors for more or less the same reasons ... colin firth, hugh grant, matthew macfadyen, bill nighy, tom hollander, tobias menzies, ralph fiennes
hugh laurie — we obviously need him back in sketch/comedy, but i also personally just need something to associate him with (in recent years) that isn't 1) the night manager or 2) him talking shit about house md fans. man is so grumpy like please write him some funnies 😭
dominic cooper, jodie whittaker, anthony boyle, claudia jessie (never seen anything she's acted in but i know she's funny af), michaela coel would all be amazing
i'll try and think of some more! my sorry-for-putting-this-in-the-universe prediction is that james corden will be one of the guest hosts... 🙃 and if i made any other actual predictions that may be a little more realistic (lol) hmmmm...
celia imrie, hannah waddingham, aimee lou wood, sian clifford, lee mack, miranda hart, kit connor, mawaan rizwan, that little kid from hamnet, tom ellis, ncuti gatwa, gina yashere (especially to promote the new star trek show), asim chaudhry, alan cumming
i don't know what calibre of celeb we should be expecting, whether it's proper a-to-b-list with some degree of hollywood crossover like we get on snl usa or may be a little more...modest and local? 👀 because the first host (tina fey) is snl royalty, it feels a little like a cheat? like, is she doing this just because it's snl or should we expect more big-ish names like hers, you know? very curious!!!
