—¿Y por qué te iba a querer a ti? —le preguntó el Toro con el ceño fruncido—. ¡Si no eres más que una rata de alcantarilla! 

—¡Y tú no eres más que un bastardo! —«¿O tal vez fingía que sólo era un bastardo?»—. ¿Cómo te llamas de verdad?

 —Gendry —replicó él, aunque no parecía muy seguro.

 —No veo por qué os tendrían que buscar a ninguno de los dos —dijo Yoren.

i love this appearance of the ‘smallfolk’ themes in arya’s chapters. it comes after a lot of detail about how filthy and abject they are and how different it is for arya, but here they all show real courage in the face of the queen’s men. yoren kind of exemplified this as he first appears to arya (and bran) as foul-smelling, mean and harsh, but he does take a risk here protecting both arya and gendry.

this is almost kind of an ‘i am spartacus’ moment where arya tells them to take her (and it’s also funny once you realize the men really are trying to get gendry, not her) and all these smallfolk stand up too

Suicide

Yoren loved her, but not like his brothers of the Night’s Watch, but in a different way, like a forbidden love that would never be consummated because of his oath to the brotherhood, in front of the heart tree under the first light of dawn.

The old man was the first to find her. His knees struck against the rocky ground, kneeling, and he held her in his arms. His head sank into the young woman’s hair, crying. She had committed suicide. Her neck still bore the rope that caused her end. She preferred to die rather than surrender to the destiny that men had traced for her, and she let herself be consumed by the silence of death. Not for being cowardly, but to escape a pain greater than death.

Yoren pulled his head away from her hair and caressed it through tears, tucking it behind her ear while he looked into her eyes. His black leather gloves brushed her hair and her cold, pale cheek. The young woman’s eyes were closed, but her lips were half-open and dry.

But what led her to make this fateful decision? Her father’s words had driven her to the edge of desolation and grief, trapped in a world where the only way out was physical death, and thus her soul could travel through the winds of the North, beyond the limits of this world, freely, like the people who live beyond the wall, beyond the edge of maps and men’s laws, where snow falls silent and no lord holds power.

The best thing about Yoren he protected Arya and Gendry from the (mad) Queen like before Jon Arryn did the same for Ned and Robert. I like Lyanna-Robert and Arya-Gendry parallels but i worship Ned-Robert parallels.

The Red Comet makes them both inadvertently think of the lives they both just lost

“The Red Sword,” the Bull named it; he claimed it looked like a sword, the blade red-hot from the forge. When Arya squinted the right way she could see the sword too, only it wasn’t a new sword, it was Ice, her father’s greatsword, all ripply Valyrian steel and the red was Lord Eddard’s blood on the blade after Ser Ilyn the King’s Justice had cut off his head.

The plaza was beginning to empty. The press dissolved around them as people drifted back to their lives. But Arya’s life was gone.

“Master Mott said it was time I made my first longsword. He gave me a sweet piece of steal, and I knew just how I wanted to shape the blade. Only Yoren came, and took me away for the Night’s Watch.”
