who's your favorite youcouldmakealife character / why?
Amazing question
i mean i love them all
I think Mike (from Thrown Off the Ice) is probably my favourite, i love reading him struggle with disability, his complicated relationship with his sexuality, with violence and softness, with his dad, i love that while he grows as a character throughout the story he's never "fixed" he can never tell Liam he loves him, something about that feels so honest to me, you can know your flaws and still not be able to overcome them, that bittersweet kind of happy ending really gets me
for similar reasons I really like Luke (from Throw Up Your Fists, Throw Out Your Wits) his story really aches in such a beautiful way, and i'm obsessed with love stories that are not romantic, where love does not fix people and it does not conquer all, and I'm obsessed with the fact that Luke loves Niki and Niki loves Luke but they do nothing but make each other bleed, but Luke can't forgive him and can't let him in, and probably is right to, and like the ending of that story is satisfying without being happy, which again, I'm obsessed with
And then Georgie (Always In Tandem) . fucking Georgie. Again he is such a beautifully complex character and i love the way ao3 allows stories to be free of normal narrative arcs, and how we have been able to watch Georgie and Robbie throughout their lives, moving away from one another and then coming back together and like really growing up, it's so beautifully written. And georgie is such a lovely person who is so fucking lonely and he fucks up but it's so fucking real and relatable and I don't know, i adore him, i hope he gets his boy in the end
always thinking about georgie dineen btw
niche posting but @ycmal-verse enjoyers: Challengers is like if instead of fighting over Evan, Harry and Roman were fighting over/negotiating polyamory with/being psychosexually manipulated by Playoff Willy
is impaired judgment (and other excuses) done already... am i waiting in vain for a new chapter... i need my dose of my hockey otp bad
For fans of @youcouldmakealife here are my comprehensive YCMAL playlists. Each one follows a particular pairing in order of their narrative so I recommend not shuffling (unless you want to, it’s a free country lol). I have been hyperfixating HARD on this universe and my feelings are way too big for words so here’s music instead.
Disclaimer that some of these songs are on here primarily because funny. Not most, but some (looking at you camila cabello song on Jared/Bryce).
Here they are in no particular order:
i ain’t dumb but he’s my tweedledee
Scratchnmoney
i won’t say (i’m in love)
Liam/Mike
it’s gonna be forever/or it’s gonna go down in flames
Georgie/Robbie
kiss with a fist
Luke/Nikita
little lady
Gabe/Stephen
freckles
Dan/Marc
i’m on the bleachers
Vinny/Anton
i keep a window for ya/it’s always open
David/Jake
wildest dreams
Julien/Alexei
take off all your preppy clothes
Jared/Bryce
you’ve got that thing/that makes birds forget to sing
Harry/Roman/Evan
Okay so a year ago I made a reclist of books that have a similar vibe to Captive Prince, and then @getbeatrized commented on it saying that they wish there was one for the Him series by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy.
Now this isn’t the exact same because they’re not all m/m friends-to-lovers hockey series, but a good few of them are so hopefully they’re useful to someone:
• Season’s Change by Cait Nary (This was a book I really enjoyed and cannot fathom how it has less than 4 stars on goodreads. Like, I debated making a post about it a few weeks ago to try and get people to read and review.)
• Game Changers series by Rachel Reid (Shane and Ilya!!!).
• All of Taylor Fitzpatrick’s hockey books (The author also has an AO3.)
• Scoring Chances series by Avon Gale.
• Catherine Cloud’s books.
@youcouldmakealife’s new series is what I have been waiting for my whole life
