He really wasn't expecting it at first. Diluc thought you were going out for a mission and that's that. When he realized you hadn't been back in some time, he decided to go ask. Jean broke the news to him and he thought she was kidding. He prayed she was kidding and you were okay, just taking a while to do your job with the best effort. However, when Jean's face looking away from him with concern and hurt, he knew that it wasn't a joke anymore. Tears stinged his eyes, his head was spinning, his heart felt empty, he couldn't manage to form words. Jean went on, explaining how you got badly injured from some Treasure Hoarders and by the time you got back, you were almost dead. Diluc rushed out to the Cathedral, just wanting to see you one more time. He went into your room, his hands shaking as he'd turned the handle. You were there of course, but you looked more beaten up than he imagined. Deep gashes all over your arms, a stab wound on your stomach area, scratches all over your legs from trying to run, all with such a calm and serene look on your face, like you were having the best sleep of your life. He broke down at the sight, dropping to his knees beside you. You were his outlet, something he finally got to look forward to after a rough day, someone that would hear his problems and get him through it. He didn't have that anymore. Fuck, he was a mess really. Banging the floor with his fist to the point they drew blood, with tears pouring from his eyes. He didn't want you to go. Not this soon. Diluc felt like such a big chunk of his life was ripped away, like when his dad died. The worst part for him was..
" I didn't even get to say goodbye.. "
He went to the Guild when you were a week late from your travels. Xiao's karma got more pent up without you to even it out, and he missed you. As much as he'd hate to admit it, he hated not hearing you at home and how quiet it was. When he came, Lan and Katherine looked at each other with a " He doesn't know-? " glance, making him cross his arms and raise a eyebrow. Lan whispered to him, sorrow lacing into her voice. " No one has told you yet? " He'd get impatient, looking at her with a menacing glare. " Obviously not. " When she broke the news, he thought he didn't hear her correctly. Maybe he was dreaming? He couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it. When Xiao went to see you, he tried to convince himself he didn't care. So many of his friends have died in his face, he shouldn't get pent up about you. So, why does he have this aching feeling in his heart? Why does his karma feel.. heavier? Seeing you, covered in bloody bandages and scars from the last fight you would ever have, he didn't know how to react. He felt like he just got stabbed but he wouldn't die. His hands trembled and reached out for yours, now cold and lifeless unlike all the hand holds you did while watching the pier in Liyue Harbor. Your soft, gentle hands holding his rough calloused ones, always felt full of love. They didn't anymore. They felt like the tip of the highest mountain in Dragonspine. He hated it. He hated how the humankind was so weak and couldn't just heal themselves. He just wanted you back, that's all. He could live with this karma for years and years to come, but he wanted to go through it with you.
" Why didn't you call my name? I- I could of saved you.. "
