The summer heat boiled oppressively in the east, a mid-July sun bearing down on the valley stream where Roy Mustang laid watching Riza Hawkeye work. Every muscle in her small body coiled with anticipation as she stared down the barrel of an old hunting rifle, waiting for the young buck across the waterway to move just a little bit closer.
Roy kept silent as Riza crept forward an inch, leveling the rifle slowly. She was still for a long time, so long Roy wondered if she'd turned to stone, when a sudden gunshot reported sharply through the air, and Roy jumped in spite of himself.
Across the stream, the buck crumpled silently, dead before it even hit the ground, and the blonde girl was already pulling her battered shoes off to wade through the water. Roy scrambled to his feet, stripping his boots and following her to lend a hand that he knew she didn't need.
@moms-made-fullmetal-2020 Day 5: Comfort
This one came out naturally after @firewoodfigs and I were talking about a slow unraveling, theorizing how young!Roy must’ve spent so much time and effort to win young!Riza’s friendship, only for her to become estranged from him later and refer to him as “Mr. Mustang” the next time they saw each other.
Perhaps Riza simply couldn’t wrap her head around why Roy had to leave, and why he had to leave for the military of all bloody--!
How did that go down in the Hawkeye mansion? Did Roy ever get the chance to explain his decision? Did Riza start to avoid him up until the day he finally took the train to Eastern Command? What exactly must’ve made it so hard for her to accept..?
While at the Academy, Roy is permitted leave and visits his sisters and the Madame. He gets the chance to explain how his apprenticeship didn’t exactly end well. The Madame, of course standing as his mother, could infer that Roy was much more upset about his childhood friend...
Miss Hawkeye must have noticed Roy watching the Manor's high windows. "My father does most everything in our basement." She said. She gave no more explanation than that. Her face belied nothing but boredom, the dregs of annoyance sat so plain on her brow. "Show me what our King's men have taught you."

Riza was four months into thirteen when she woke up, for the first time, with her bedsheets stained with red. She was a little confused, at first. Her mother, long passed, was never there for her to ask questions about… well, girl problems. Riza had pushed all the confusion to the back of her mind upon waking, and shuffled to the bathroom careful as to not trip on her sheets bundled in her arms. She kicked the door closed from behind her when she made it inside. At the sink, she heard a gentle knock at the door. “Riza?” It was her father’s apprentice. “Mister Mustang?” Riza replied, shocked and panicked; she didn’t want him, a boy, to know what had happened. --
Riza experiences the crux of womanhood, but thankfully she has the best friend she could ever have to help her, however mortified she may be.
i dont know whats wrong with me but “cis woman character getting helped w period by love interest” is CRACK so i wrote some... some may say: ‘gross!’ but to that, i’d say, ‘grow up!!!!!!!!!!’

“You’ve never been to Central?” Roy exclaimed, straightening his back.
Riza pressed her lips into a small frown. “What’s so great about it, anyway?”
“The people, the food— it’s my place!” Roy gushes about his hometown, his hands gesturing at every thought. “The way the entire city lights up after dark— it’s as if stars fell from the sky!”
Riza’s lips drew into a half-smile, gazing at him in amusement. “I think I’d like that.”
“You definitely would!” Roy leaned forward. “And in Harvest festivals, they shoot fireworks in the sky!”
Riza cocked her head, to which Roy supplied an explanation, “Fireworks burst into the air and make lights of different colors. They go boom, boom, boom— like flowers of light at night!”
Riza giggled at Roy’s excitement and gestures. She never knew her father’s apprentice could be this goofy.
“I’ll let you come with me!” Roy grinned, the widest he’s ever made. “If the Master approves, of course.”
Riza’s smile disappeared at the mention of her father. “Mister Mustang, I think we should get going.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Roy stood up, squeezing his cardigan dry. Fortunately, the rain had stopped pouring. Then he reached out a hand to Riza, “Call me Roy instead.”
Riza eyed his hand, then placed hers onto his palm. Roy helped her stand up, and their eyes met. With their hands still clasped, Riza smiled at him. “It’s nice to meet you, Roy. Call me Riza.”
When they had arrived at the mansion, Berthold forbade them from getting too familiar with each other. Riza was only allowed to do groceries or go out hunting early in the morning. But that hadn’t stopped their friendship from blossoming.
