This is my presentation, showing a breakdown of my research, how it has affected my understanding of 3D animation and the industry. It has influenced me to start my career in animation.
Bellow are my notes to follow the presentation with:
Presentation Notes
Intro
Name, what I have chosen, what I hope to find out.
Slide 1
Animation is to create a sequence of images changing and moving over time to create a motion picture story using paint, or different drawing methods.
Slide 2
The industry is worldwide with major business’s in Canada, UK and Asia. London is the centre of the UK industry for animation.
Slide 3
The animation industry is highly competitive and according to these statistics there are only 4,624 people in the UK employed, 30% of those are freelancers employed for 364 days or less.
Slide 4
These skill gaps are reported to be less than industry standards from technical skills to sales and marketing skills so although there is a lot of competition getting into the animation industry, they are in constant need of people in the departments they lack.
Slide 5
The creative industries provided £84.1bn to the British economy in 2014
They reveal the number of jobs in the industry grew by virtually 9% between 2013 and 2014
Slide 6
Tax Reliefs have been introduced for each of the sectors, this ensures that the UK film industry is continuously maximising its position in a competitive environment, that is is producing more prosperous British products and employment.
Slide 7
The UK animation programme production business remains relatively minuscule – in 2013-14, production expenditure was £51.7 million, producing £41.4 million in direct GVA, and fortifying 1,100 full-time similar jobs.
However, the animation industry is known to spill over into other sectors of the creative industry effectively encouraging other sectors to generate more income, employment and tax revenue.
So when the multiplier and spillover effects are taken into account, the UK animation programme sector is visually perceived at an income of £171.1 million in GVA, creating 4,700 full-time similar jobs, and providing £52.0 million in tax revenue to the Exchequer.
Slide 8
Although the impact of the incipient animation programme tax relief (ATR) will take time to take place majorly,
A comparison between 2011 (pre-ATR) when the amount of animation produced was £46 million and in 2013-2014, when it raised to £51.7 million suggests an advance of 11% in the amount of production spend for the first year of the ATR.
This is equivalent to a taxation return for the Exchequer of £0.32 in adscititious tax revenues for every pound of tax mitigation.
This shows that the production of animation is rising fast year by year generating more gross income for the UK economy causing the UK economy to encourage the increase of production and employment creating a cycle between the animation industry and UK economy.
Slide 9
Apprenticeships, Degrees, work experience and internships will give a great advantage over other competitors.
Many companies look for a thing called Tick Apprenticeships or Degrees which is simply an award give to those
That incorporate the most with many industries and give a big sense of industry work flow with their projects.
Internships - major understanding of industry work-flow and receive great work experience, it also allows you to start building a network
Slide 10
The larger companies tend to hire specialists in animation, character rigging, modelling for example and smaller companies go for hiring generalists with more adept skill sets.
There are also many less artistic but as important roles in the industry such as technical animation, coding, human resources.
Your CV should highlight these skills in specific programmes and should especially apply to the company you’re sending it to.
They look for your knowledge of their company showing evidence of your interests in this specific company.
There are ways to prove your passion for the role why explaining your commitment to projects, your further education for a 3 year degree
Portfolio show specific detail and a breakdown of your skills in the best of your work with sketches and drawings - artistic abilities.
Slide 11
3D animators do this using various tools in programmes such as maya allowing them to create these images by keyframes parts of the character or object, with much depth and ease rather than drawing every frame as a 2D animator would do.
They could work in feature movies for example Pixar movies; or short animations for marketing and advertisement or website animations.
A 3D animator can also specialise in producing different features of an animation.
For example, character animation - commit to environmental animation or secondary animation such as objects, bringing life to the backgrounds of animations.
3D animators will follow a brief set by the Lead Directors and Producers and will also be managed by specific Directors to different sectors of the project.
Workflow can vary within the industry - start relaxed - perfect styles of animation - end of deadlines - fast workflow - heavy workload set upon them
precise skill sets are required for 3D animation
It is unlikely starting off as a 3D animator - modeller or even starting off as a runner.
Talent and determination you will progress very quickly

Contract agreeing that they give up their Intellectual Property and rights to the ideas and work produced by them, in order to receive payment.
Slide 13
Entrepreneurship
Turning an idea into a profitable business that in theory enables everyone to profit and succeed.
Instead of following the status quo - take unpredictable opportunities for the greater good that others would not risk.
Pixar have uses their stories or characters they’ve created to explain how entrepreneurship.
Characters succeeding and proving the non-believers wrong.
Slide 14
Marlin is close to giving up hope and Dory advises him to “Just Keep Swimming.”
Risk thinking they have made the wrong choice
Keep a strong and positive attitude,
Short-term goals are exactly what is need for business’s to grow popular fast and start trialling new ideas
It’s sometimes best to get through one short-term goals at a time and “Just Keep Swimming.”
Slide 15
“I never look back darling, it distracts from the now.”
The Incredibles family brand/attire throwing out the old design saying
Many business strategists advise not to allow yourself to over work or let it consume you
Entrepreneurs will be challenged with difficult decisions and challenges that require complete attention and consumption.
When Edna is in the “flow” of designing she gives her full attention into new ideas coming up with the removal of the cape as it is impractical.
This workflow is exactly the state of mind that an entrepreneur needs to be in to successfully
Slide 16
Buzz keeps a strong mind-set of “Infinity and Beyond” in which he achieves successful entrepreneurship
Strong sense of courage and bravery he also gets frustrated when the other toys don’t share his opinions
As entrepreneurs it is usually best to surround yourself with others that do share your enthusiasm and ambitions in order to create an outstanding business.
Slide 17
Innovative ideas are the constant future for business, animation and the entire world. These allow technology to grow - evolve animation
Innovation doesn’t only apply to inventing new technology but creates new business strategies and ways to grow
Innovation in animation has strived through the years, there have been more and more innovative ideas from Magic Lanterns
I have found many innovative trends that have been used in animation in the recent years to either create a greater experience for the audience when viewing an animation, to create new efficient processes of animating and overall increase the capabilities of producing amazing new animations.
Slide 18
entertaining not only for the audiences but for the creators of it as well
projects such as shorts, advertisements and interactive games.
It uses both 2D and 3D animation with a 360 degree spherical camera allowing it to capture a cinema quality video with full sphere surround sound using advanced sensor fusion techniques.
It expands on existing 360° platforms by allowing creators to include interactive components and camera techniques.
Another innovative invention that has changed that way audiences can view an animation as well as changing the way the animation industry will consider creating them.
Slide 19
“Motion capture is the process of recording the movement of objects or people.”
In filmmaking, animation and video games, it records actions of human actors, and using that recording to animate digital character models in 2D or 3D computer animation.
Advantages -efficient testing in character movement and personalities, and is limited to a specific character personality by the talent of the actor.
More complex movements created easier with the movements of the actors showing precise realistic actions such as secondary actions and weight.
Andy Serkis has used motion capture to portray famous characters in films such as The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes.
He founded his own studio
He also has an ambition to incorporate this into universities for degrees such as animation so people can hone their skills in motion capture for filmmaking.
Slide 20
From the research I have gathered into the industry I have shown that the Animation Industry is growing in production and employment by the year.
There are still even now skill gaps within the industry and are lacking within these certain departments so although it is a competitive industry it is still striving for new talent to fill these roles.
As I have shown, the industry is constantly generating more gross income for the UK economy where it had raised 11% within the last few years.
This is causing the UK economy to encourage this growth creating a constant cycle; the more the animation industry succeeds the more the economy profits, the more the economy will fund the animation industry.
I believe this means the larger the animation industry grows the more generates income for the UK economy creating a need for larger production which will create a higher rate of employment.
Therefore, I believe job availability in the near future will still be competitive in talent however, there will be a higher demand to hiring more talented animators.
Slide 21
From my research I have gather knowledge of the industry that I had no idea about, from economics and how the industry help the UK economy to how the message of entrepreneurship is conveyed in Pixar animations to new innovative technologies that will change the near future of the animation industry.
I now understand how the animation industry works in my different ways.
It has definitely informed me on how it will plan my career, I realise now exactly what the industry looks for in animators, from education to internships, work experience and even CV’s and showreels.
It has given me an understanding of an interesting field in the animation industry that I will definitely consider specialising in. However, there are other sectors I wish to experience before I make a definite decision.
I found myself being interested in the research I have created, I again now know the industries standard and requirements and what talent they seek. In doing so I am excited to begin planning to apply for internships to help me set up a network and I also hope to find a job as simple as a runner like I previously used to, so I can understand the workflow of the industry better and also create more networks in doing so.
