it was probably the way u look when u laugh. that smile, so perfect and genuine, was unlike anything else he'd ever seen. it's a warm, soft smile, one that brightens the day of everyone in the area.

the way you'd talk. your words were so gentle, so kind, when you told him anything. he felt like he could talk to you and you'd never utter a word of it to anyone else.

it was the way you'd always know what he was thinking. at times it pissed him off, but he learned to appreciate never needing to say his feelings out loud. it made him feel better about having feelings at all.

maybe it was the way that you could switch from serious to not, just as quickly as he could. the way you could laugh with him at times but have important conversations too.

Whenever people compare Ash and Yue I think something they always forget is that while both of them were very much prisoners, Ash was given a lot more agency than Yue ever was.

Think about it: Dino was raising Ash to be his heir he had him take on leadership roles and “allowed” him to run his own gang etc etc. In a sick twisted way Ash was valuable, an asset. Praised and admired, being polished to someday live upto whatever standard of greatness he was held to (never mind that no one ever asked him what he wanted for himself)

Yue was no one. He had nothing and his position in the Lee family was precarious. It was clear that he was just barely surviving by keeping himself useful in any way he could.

The elaborate Sun/Moon metaphor is entirely a part of his (unrequited) rival fantasy with Ash. It’s a trauma response - he hasn’t processed anything that has happened to him. He’s spent so much of his life fighting to survive against an external threat that when there no longer is a threat he feels lost and empty. 

We see a glimpse of a similar instinct in Ash. When they were hiding out Ash mentioned feeling like he can never relax, and how his head is always going through the worst case scenarios. This is dialed up to the max for Yue, who feels like he needs someone to hate at all times and work towards destroying because otherwise what is his purpose? His raison d’etre? What else is he supposed to do, sit back and relax?

This isn’t to minimize anything that Ash has gone through. It’s just that I always get upset when people use Ash as an example of how Yue could have been/done better. Because even before Eiji, Ash’s little pockets of freedom found him people like Shorter, Nadia, Skip, his gang - people who genuinely cared about him and looked upto him, while it’s very clear that Sing is the closest thing Yue’s ever had to a friend.
