“what?”
you started at him in shock. not only did he just reveal this to you, he said he loved you, not just liked.
“i—i mean, you’re you, i’ve been in love with you for a while.”
what.
you couldn’t find it in yourself to reply, you’d always loved yuji like a friend. he’d been with you through thick and thin and obliviously there’d been times when you thought of him in a different light, but in the end he was always just yuji, your friend from middle school.
“i’m sorry i sprung this on you, you don’t have to answer and you can reject me if you don’t feel the same. i don’t want things to be awkward between us because of this.”
you stared at him.
you and yuji… dating?
would it be so bad?
he was a good fake boyfriend, he was actually better than anyone else you’d dated before.
“i need time to think, this is all so sudden.”
“yeah, i figured. i’m really sorry, y/n.”

he left your house shortly after. it was awkward and different. you missed how things were before. laughing and joking with yuji.
you didn’t know how to feel. on one hand you liked yuji and he was basically perfect but you didn’t know if it would last, if dating would ruin your friendship you didn’t want it.

you heard a knock on your door and sprinted.
looking at yuji you felt like the biggest fool, how could you not see that you liked him?
he smiled and greeted you, you didn’t hear what he said, your thoughts only focused on his actions. how he acted normally just so you wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. you got filled with an overwhelming amount of warmth. how did you miss the small things he did for you?
the way he always made sure you were comfortable, like everything would be okay if you were happy. the way he looked at you like he saw you.
for a couple minutes you just stared at him, how were you so dense? how could you ever think about someone else when the perfect person was right in front of you?
“yuji.”
he smiled at you. “hi!”
your heart fluttered.
“i don’t want things to change between us.”
yuji’s smile faltered at your words. “what do you mean y/n?” he laughed nervously.
“i mean that i think—”
“it’s fine i get it! to be honest i shouldn’t have said it anyway! i’ll try to move on and get over you, i’m so sorry for making you uncomfortable y/n. i don’t want to ruin our friendship so just ignore what happened okay?” he got up and was about to leave.
what was he talking about?
you grabbed his wrist. “yuji.”
he looked at you, guilt and nervousness swirling in his eyes. you couldn’t look away from him.
“i love you too.” the words slipped from your lips before you could realize what you were actually saying.
“you… what?”
“i do… sorry for not realizing it sooner.” you held your breath. not knowing why. hearing yuji say he would move on really was the final push you needed.
yuji pulled you against his chest. “i’m glad.” he smiled, right before pulling you into a kiss.
you smiled and kissed him back.

you barely noticed until a boy from your class stopped by your desk.
“hey, i was wondering… do you wanna study together after school?”
you smiled politely.

he was too busy watching the boy laugh at something you said.

when the bell rang, the boy walked over one last time.
“i’ll see you tomorrow?”
before you could answer, yuji stepped beside you.
his arm rested lightly around your shoulders as he smiled.
“there you are. i’ve been looking for you.”
the smile on his face was warm.
his eyes weren’t.
he looked at the boy for a second.
“thanks for keeping her company.”
“…yeah. no problem.”
“i’ll walk her.”
the boy gave an awkward laugh.
“right… see you.”
he left much faster than before.

“were you jealous?”
he stayed quiet for a moment before letting out a small sigh.
“…yeah.”

you couldn’t help laughing.

he rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding your eyes.
“…i just don’t like people looking at you like that.”
“looking at me like what?”
“like they have a chance.”
you smiled and gently slipped your hand into his.
“you’re cute when you’re jealous.”
his cheeks immediately turned pink.
“…don’t encourage me.”
you laughed again.
“come on.”
he intertwined your fingers with his.

you were supposed to talk to yuji today. he’d been avoiding you since you ended your fake relationship, and you had no idea why. did he not like “dating” you? it didn’t matter right?
you looked in the mirror, practicing what you were going to say. to be honest, you didn’t know what to say. “stop avoiding me?” no, you couldn’t say that. you just missed him. since you stopped liking naoya life had gotten boring. why did you spend so much of your precious time and energy on that guy?
you were nervous, you’d never been nervous with yuji before, what’s different this time?
you checked the time: 4:45. fifteen minutes. he should be here in fifteen minutes. you took a deep breath, trying to ease your nerves when you heard your doorbell ring. was he here early?
you walked towards the door slowly.
you still weren’t mentally prepared for this conversation.
you opened the door, a nervous smile plastered across your face, expecting yuji.
your smile dropped seeing who faced you.
naoya zenin.
he smiled. “hey y/n!”
you sighed, pulling the door closer to you, you didn’t want him to think you were gonna let him in. he laughed. “still throwing a tantrum?”
you groaned, how did you deal with his attitude for so long? “what do you want naoya?”
“i’m guessing you’re still mad?”
“i’m not mad naoya, i told you not to talk to me.”
“cmon babe you know i love ya.”
you rolled your eyes.
“save it naoya, i’m not getting back with you.”
“i miss you y/n, i’ve been a wreck without you and i need you back.” he put his hands on his chest, it was so over dramatic you could laugh.
“yeah because i was literally your maid. get the fuck off my porch now.”
his eyes darkened. “stop messing around y/n, i told you you’re mine.”
“who do you think you are? get off naoya.” you were about to shut the door in his face, but he held it. then he grabbed your face, trying to kiss you. you gasped, what a weirdo, your instincts kicked in and you punched him in the face.
he stepped back, head spinning. “what the fuck!”his nose started bleeding. you couldn’t find it in your heart to feel bad for him. “i told you to get off my porch.”
“you’re a crazy bitch!” he said, stumbling backwards and running away. coward.
you were about to close the door for real when you saw him. yuji. did he see everything? oh no. he probably thinks you’re some violent person.
both of you stared at each other from a distance. then he smiled and started walking to you. wait he smiled?
“h—hey yuji…”
“why’d you punch your boyfriend?”
“my what?”
“aren’t you dating zenin again?”
“no? where’d you get that idea from?”
“well you said that he asked you out again so i assumed…”
“what?! no way! dating you made me realize how bad he was!” you blurted out, not realizing what you just admitted.
his ears were bright red. “oh. um, you looked cool when you punched him. he totally deserved it. i was gonna step in but then… you’re so awesome y/n!” he smiled brightly.
compliments came easy to yuji, the way his smile was blinding, it was all oddly comforting. you found yourself thinking about how important he was to you. wait what? where’d that come from?
“oh yeah, why’d you ask me to come over again?” he asked, looking at you with those eyes.
you cleared your throat. you were about to start your speech, something you’d practiced in the mirror all day. something you should be able to say in your sleep. but when you looked into his eyes your mind went blank. what’s wrong with you?
“h—how about we sit inside?” you offered instead.
“oh yeah, good idea!” he said, smiling.
you fidgeted with your sleeve, why were you so nervous? it’s just yuji. your friend yuji. your friend that you kissed…
“hey are you okay?” his voice broke you out of your spiraling.
“um yeah! i was just…” you looked down, this is so embarrassing. “it’s just that you were avoiding me after we stopped fake dating, and i felt like you were pulling away from me, and it just made me realize how important you are to me. i also realized that i missed you a lot and without you life feels kind of dull…” that was definitely not what you planned to say.
“oh…”
“i just wanted to know if i did something wrong, i don’t think i did. and it made me spiral. i thought you didn’t want to be friends anymore and i couldn’t take it because, i need you yuji. so why?” after you said that you stopped, looking at him for an answer. you didn’t care about the script you planned, you just wanted to know how he felt.
“um… i— i thought you got back with naoya so i kept my distance because i love you y/n.” now it was your turn to be silent.
“what?”
