WORD COUNT: 4k
A/N: happy 2026 !! wish fic to start the year off right !!!!
When you planned to move out of your family friend’s basement a year ago, you had no idea how hard it would be to find a good place to stay. Too many nice places were expensive, and too many creepy men posted cheap offerings.
You had a steady job, but it didn’t pay enough to live by yourself in an expensive city. That’s why you were all over Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, looking for someone who seemed normal and friendly to live with.
You could tell when someone posted a reasonable rent and when someone posted a discounted price, provided the applicant was a woman with certain qualities. God, you thought, why are there no women looking for a roommate?
As you saved seemingly decent listings, you also made a point to look at the poster’s profile, especially to see if you had any mutuals. One day, as you were scrolling through Marketplace, you found a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment to share with a man. For the commodities, the price listed looked reasonable.
“Tokuno Yushi...” You whisper as you look at his highly rated profile. His profile picture was cute, and you couldn’t help but think he looked familiar. You’re sure you’ve heard of a Yushi, but there has to be a million guys named that. You try searching his name on Instagram to see if anyone you know followed him.
Followed by Sullyoon, Gyuvin, and 3 others
You raise your eyebrows in surprise. Of course, you knew Yushi; you always saw your friends talking to him during parties, but you were usually busy talking to someone else or suddenly needed to use the washroom. You wonder if you could get special treatment as their friend.
You try to write your message to Yushi, but have trouble. You didn’t want to sound too excited or too formal. Finally, you decide to stop stressing, as you’re sure he knows you from all the gatherings you both happen to be at at the same time.
Y/N: Hey, Yushi! I’ve been looking for a place to live in and share, and I was surprised to see you pop up. Is the offer still available?
You send the message, and let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding. You go back to looking through more listings, but all you can think about is how badly you wanted Yushi to answer. Your thoughts were answered when you received a few notifications a few minutes later.
Yushi: Hi, Y/N! Yes, it is still available!
Yushi: My friend Jaehee just moved out, and I need someone to split rent with
You see that he is still typing, and quickly take a screenshot. You go to your messages and send it in a groupchat with you and your two friends.
Gyuvin: Yo, if there’s anyone I would wanna be roommates with, it’s Yushi
Sullyoon: You should really live with him. He’s the nicest. I feel like he’d just do all the chores
Y/N: Fr? Is he that nice?
Gyuvin: Yes
Sullyoon: Yes
You laugh as they send the same text at the same time. You wonder if Yushi was waiting for your response, but when you go back to the app, he’s still typing. You wait a few more seconds before he finally sends a text.
Yushi: If you’re interested, I would honestly accept immediately. I haven’t met many trustworthy people on here, but since we have so many mutual friends, I trust you. If you have any questions, or wanna come and look at the place, just let me know!
You looked at the text and smiled. Yushi must have rewritten the message multiple times to sound both professional and kind.
Y/N: I am definitely interested! I was excited to see someone I knew on here. A lot of men aren’t subtle with their postings lol
Y/N: Are you available at 6 in the evening tomorrow? I can come after work
Yushi: That’s fine! I’ll be back from work then
The next day, you made sure to look extra nice in the morning before heading to work. You needed to look presentable for Yushi, hopefully your soon-to-be roommate, and if that meant waking up earlier to iron your clothes and make sure your makeup was perfect under many layers of setting spray, then so be it.
At the end of the day, you drive over to Yushi’s place. The apartment was way closer to your workplace than where you were already staying, which was another reason why you wanted to move there. As you find a spot to park on the street, you spot Yushi by the door, who smiles when he makes eye contact with you. He approaches you as you get out of your car.
“Hi, Y/N.” Yushi shyly greets you, and you smile at him. You hadn’t seen him in a while, and you forgot how cute he was. You realize his hair has gone blond since the last time you saw him with dark hair. He’s in a white button-up and slacks, and the lack of fatigue in his face suggests he freshened up before seeing you.
“Hello, Yushi. Thank you, by the way. I know we haven’t really talked, but I’m happy you considered me.” You tell Yushi as he walks beside you inside, tapping his key fob on the sensor to open the door. He turns back to smile at you. “Blond really suits you.”
Yushi quickly walks in front of you to hide the blush creeping up on his face, “Of course. I’d rather have someone I see all the time because they know my friends, than some random guy who looks like he’d make me wash his dishes or touch my things.”
Entering the bright elevator, Yushi turns towards you as he presses his floor’s button, and you can see the slight blush on his face when he looks at you before immediately looking down at his feet. He leans back on the wall as he brings a hand up to his hair, “Thanks, by the way. I got it done last week. I'm gonna wait a bit before I try even more colours.”
“I can't wait to see what you have in mind.” You smile at the timid man in front of you. Yushi looks back at you and smiles. The elevator reaches his floor, and he walks you to his apartment.
Once he opens the door, you take off your shoes as you look at the living room in front of you. The furniture and decorations are all off-white. The couches and TV are large, filling the ample space. The open kitchen is right behind the couches, and you can imagine Yushi and his old roommate watching TV as they cook.
“So, this is the living room and kitchen. Pretty big. I bought most of the decorations. Jaehee bought most of the kitchenware. We split the big things like the seating and TV.” Yushi explains as you walk to the kitchen, hoping it isn’t completely barren.
The cupboards are stacked with plates, and the drawers are filled with utensils. You go over to the fridge and find many ingredients lying around. “I like to cook healthy things for my roommate and guests. I can't have my fridge empty.” Yushi shyly says as you look at him, rubbing his neck.
“That’s sweet. I like to cook too. Hopefully, we can cook together. I was scared you would only have junk food in your fridge and barely any plates.” You laugh, and Yushi shyly joins in. He didn’t blame you; most of his friends live like that. Yushi gestures over to a hallway, where two doors face each other.
“These are the bedrooms. Let me show you yours.” Yushi says as he opens the door on the left. The white room looks huge because it’s almost entirely empty, save for the queen bed frame and wide wardrobe. You’re surprised Yushi waited till Jaehee left to post the listing.
“That door is the washroom. Mine is also attached to my room.” Yushi says he walks towards it. You look in from behind him, not realizing how close you were. You stare at the bathtub with a shower overhead, the toilet with a bidet, and the spotless walls and floor.
You look ahead to the spacious sink with many cabinets and drawers beneath. The mirror is also big, and that’s when you notice your head is almost leaning on Yushi’s shoulder. You note the shy, wide-eyed look on his face as he stares at you, and quickly step back. You suddenly miss the warmth of his back that you didn’t realize was radiating so much heat until now.
“This place is really nice,” You clear your throat, “I can’t believe it’s not more expensive. I absolutely love it, though. I don’t mind doing my own chores or splitting them up.” You smile, and Yushi nods. He gestures for you to follow him.
Yushi opens the door to his room, “This is my room, by the way. You should know what it looks like since you'll be my roommate. I leave my door closed most of the time if I'm in there, but you can always knock if you wanna hang.”
His walls have framed photos and artworks of him with family and friends. You're sure the plushies on his queen bed were either from his friends, or bought when he was out with them. His vanity holds some of his skincare products as well as accessories like glasses and jewelry. Around his gaming setup, you see many small figurines from anime or video games.
You smile to yourself as Yushi leads you to the living room couches. His room is so cute, you think, it only makes sense. You sit on the large sofa, and Yushi sits a bit further down the couch to keep space.
“Jaehee and I split chores up so that I cooked and washed dishes, while he cleaned the living room, kitchen, and halls. Of course, we cleaned our own rooms and did our own laundry. The machines are in that closet by the front door.” Yushi points behind you, and you quickly look.
“If you want to cook too, though, we can change it up a bit. We can alternate on who cooks and washes up, or just do both together. For cleaning, one of us can clean the floors, and the other can wipe down surfaces.” Yushi suggests, and you nod.
“I like that. So, does that mean I made a good impression?” You ask with a smirk, and Yushi giggles as he nods. He was already willing to let you be his roommate the moment you messaged him. He’s always wanted to talk to you, so moving in with you immediately made him feel like he was the luckiest man alive.
“You can move in this weekend. Let me give you my number, so that if you need any help moving things, I can be there. If you want to go shopping too, I can be there as company.” Yushi smiles as he holds his phone, and you exchange your phones. “I was about to make dinner, by the way. You should stay to see if my cooking is up to par." He jokes, and you laugh as you get up with him, following him to the kitchen.
Months later, you’re grateful to have Yushi as your roommate and great friend. Yushi, who wakes up before you on weekdays, always packs both of your lunches and has a small breakfast ready right when you wake up, which is when he’s out the door. When you both come back, you make dinner together, and he washes the dishes. The first few times this happened, you felt guilty.
“Yushi,” you sigh in annoyance as he immediately goes to the sink after eating, “I can wash the dishes. You already make my breakfast and lunch in the morning, and you insist on making dinner together. It's the least I can do.”
“It’s okay, don’t worry. I enjoy doing things around the house. When it's cleaning day, you can do most of the cleaning if it really bothers you.” Yushi laughs as he washes your bento box. You already knew you wouldn’t be able to clean without Yushi insisting on cleaning with you, and he will succeed.
All of your friends and Yushi’s friends tease you in private. You wonder if they’re immature, thinking that roommates can’t be platonic, but you quietly hope their assumptions are correct.
“Sure, he was a nice roommate, but he wasn't packing my lunch and cleaning my bento every day.” Jaehee, Yushi’s ex-roommate, quietly says as you, him, Gyuvin, and Sakuya are sitting around on the couch during a small party.
“Exactly, bro,” Gyuvin affirmed as he put his hand on Jaehee’s shoulder, “I’m telling you, he likes you, Y/N. I always noticed how he looked at you at parties back then; he had that longing look in his eyes.”
“I think you’re just being delusional for a roommate romance to happen between us.” You roll your eyes, making Sakuya laugh, but you feel your heart racing at the possibility.
Unfortunately, in the awkward working days between Christmas and New Year’s, you found yourself catching a cold that was spreading in your office. You thought it was just your throat being sore and your nose being stuffy from the weather at first, but your headaches and coughing fits proved you wrong.
"Y/N?" You hear Yushi knocking outside your door. You had taken a sick day the day before New Year’s Eve, and you had been in bed all day. Your kind roommate assumed you were sleeping in, but as he was about to make lunch, he heard bouts of coughing from your room.
“Come in.” You weakly let out. Yushi slightly opens the door, but as soon as he sees your bundled-up figure sitting up in bed with a pale face, red nose, and droopy eyes, he immediately sits across from you in bed. He presses the back of his hand to your forehead and your cheek, feeling the heat.
“You should have said something.” Yushi frowns. You feel your heart slightly ache; you didn’t want to make him sad. “I’m gonna make us some soup.”
You nod as you watch Yushi walk out your door. You feel bad and decide to move to the large couch in the living room so you can offer him some company. Yushi turns around when he hears your feet shuffle and blanket slide on the floor, smiling when you make eye contact.
Yushi puts both of your bowls on the table in front of you. He sits by your feet as you lie down on the big couch and lets you put on your comfort movie. The two of you silently watch the film, as you’ve made him watch it with you a million times.
Long after your food was done, halfway through the movie, Yushi realized that you had fallen asleep. He smiles as he watches the way you look at peace, finally, as you had been sniffling and coughing throughout the movie. He didn’t mind, though.
When it became late, and you were still sleeping on the couch, Yushi hesitantly woke you up. You felt like you could sleep on the couch for the night, as you were too tired to even keep your eyes open.
“Are you really sure?” Yushi asked, and you let out a slight hum before knocking out again. He feels guilty and goes to his room to grab his own blanket. He settles down on the small couch beside yours, and although he feels uncomfortable sleeping in his seated position, he falls asleep so that you’re not alone.
The next morning, New Year’s Eve, you wake up before Yushi. You barely open your eyes, but when you see Yushi’s bundled-up, sleeping figure near you, you pry your eyes open. His red hair was sticking all over the place, and you could tell he had to keep adjusting his posture throughout the night. You can hear his breath coming out of his lips, and the light from the windows shines on his straight nose.
You quickly grab your phone and act like you just woke up when you see Yushi let out a big yawn. He slowly opens his eyes and immediately looks at you, surprised that you have woken up.
“Good morning.” Yushi almost whispers as he gives you a warm smile, and you can only give him an apologetic smile. Despite his smile, you tell by his eye bags and the way he cranes his neck that he did not sleep properly.
“You could have slept in your room. I wasn’t gonna go anywhere.” You laugh as you both get up to stretch. Yushi just shakes his head, not wanting to tell you that he just wanted to be around you, and in case you felt lonely or unsafe. “Thank you, though. I'm feeling a bit better. Just don't get my cold.”
“Let’s freshen up. I’m gonna let Jaehee know we can’t make it to his party tonight. I’ll make us some more soup after I’m done.” Yushi splutters as he quickly walks to his room, trying to hide his blush from you. You quickly get up to follow him.
You find Yushi in his washroom, washing his face. You make eye contact with him through his mirror. “No way,” you cough as you lean against his doorframe, “I can stay home by myself. You should go, I don’t wanna ruin your fun.”
“You're not ruining anything. I'm not going if you're not there. I’d rather stay here and watch the fireworks on the TV with you.” Yushi responds as he finishes up, getting ready to brush his teeth. He looks back at you, your frown evident.
“Fine,” You relent, “I’m ordering dinner for us, though.” Yushi just laughs and nods as you walk to your own washroom to get ready for the day.
Later, you’re surfing through TV channels from the kitchen while you hover over Yushi as he cooks. His soup from yesterday helped you tremendously, and you wanted to learn his recipe in case he catches your cold.
Suddenly, you hear the doorbell ring. You both look to the door, and as you do, Yushi smiles at you and nods slightly towards it, indicating that you open it. You scrunch up your face in confusion, but do what he silently asks.
You open the door and find a delivery person from your local flower shop. You didn’t get a clear look at his face because of the bouquet of about 20 white roses in his hands.
“Are you Y/N?” The deliveryman asks. You nod and finally close your mouth, which has been agape. “I have a bouquet for you from a Tokuno Yushi.” Your eyes widen, and you look over at your roommate. His smile is broad as he stops cooking the soup and walks over to you. You slowly take it from the man, who bids farewell as you are still stunned.
“Do you like it? I figured it would cheer you up.” Yushi smiles as he slips past you to close the door, smiling at the bouquet in your hand. You watch him step even closer, and you don’t know what to say. You’re sure your wide eyes let him know how surprised you were.
“Thanks.” You mutter, stepping away to take them to your room. Once you enter, you close your door and rest against it to catch your breath. Is it normal for your roommate to give you such beautiful, expensive flowers?
You hurry to your table to unwrap the bouquet and cut the stems with your scissors. All you could think about was Yushi’s sweet, innocent smile. Almost like he was in... love. You finish cutting them up and place them in your vase. You head to your washroom sink to fill the vase, then rush back to your desk to put in the flower food.
Without thinking, you bring your vase to the living room. Yushi, who thought he had messed up by getting you flowers, watches as you place them on the little table in front of the couch. He smiles and quickly prepares your bowls of soup.
“You keeping them here?” Yushi asks as he sets your bowls before you. He goes back to his spot by your feet. He smiles when he realizes you had his comfort movie ready to stream before you went to grab your flowers.
“No, I'll take them back to my room later. Just wanna keep them where I can see them for now.” You smile as you look at Yushi, and he tries not to melt from how cute you look wrapped up in your blanket.
You talk as you watch his favourite movie, and Yushi is touched that you know his favourites. After, you play some teamwork games on his Nintendo Switch, sometimes arguing, sometimes hugging and cheering. For dinner, you agree to eat Korean food, so you order a few stews and appetizers as Yushi prepares rice.
Yushi gets drinks ready as you decide to watch a new comedy movie. It was hard to find activities until midnight, but you were grateful that your roommate provided company, making time fly by faster.
You and Yushi are laughing the entire time. You were sitting up straight right beside him, and you kept holding onto each other, trying not to fall over laughing. You couldn’t tell if the movie really was that funny, or if tipsy Yushi laughing hard was the real reason you were laughing. Your movie ended minutes before midnight.
“Quick! Put on the New Year broadcast!” Yushi says, lightly hitting your arm. You laugh at his enthusiasm. You had never shared a New Year’s celebration with one person, and it just happens to be your cute roommate.
You suddenly feel Yushi clutch onto your arm as you watch couples do the same on TV. Your eyes widen, and you look at the flowers he gave you. Had Gyuvin been right about Yushi? Jaehee has always complained about how Yushi spoils you, and you never thought much of it anyway. You thought it was just Yushi being nice because you didn’t start off as friends.
You turn to stare at the side of Yushi’s face. His sharp features and kind face were comforting to see. His smile as he watched couples get ready for the New Year’s kiss was slight, but you wondered if he was wishing for the same thing as you.
Yushi turns towards you with a knowing smile. “You know how the boys always tease me about how I do everything for you?” He asks as he clutches your hand. You only nod, and he sees your eyes flicker down to his lips.
“Do you think it’s a coincidence?” Yushi continues, now only staring at your lips. You breathe hitches, and you can’t believe this is happening.
You put one hand on his cheek, the other on the curve of his neck.
Fireworks erupt on screen, and you and Yushi latch lips. His hands go to your waist as you kiss slowly, yet passionately, savouring the moment. In between each kiss, your foreheads and noses lightly brush. You feel at ease as Yushi rubs your waist, hoping to comfort you.
You pull away, and you both look away, blushing extremely. You recover first and hold Yushi’s hand so he looks at you again. You both smile at each other, lightly giggling. You kiss the corner of his mouth, and he goes silent again, with that cute smile.
“Why don’t we start this new year differently?” You smirk teasingly, leaning your head close to his. He laughs again and suddenly lies back, bringing you with him. Your head is on his chest, and he looks down at you with adoration.
“New year, new relationship with my roommate.” Yushi smiles as he pecks your forehead. You smile and peck his lips. “Everyone is going to freak out.”
“Everyone’s gonna call us their parents, especially Ryo and Sakuya.” You joke, and Yushi laughs. He suddenly falls into a coughing fit. You get off his chest and look at him with a deadpanned face as he smiles apologetically.
“Oops. Looks like I’m sick now. At least I have my girlfriend to take care of me.” Yushi playfully teases, causing you to roll your eyes with a laugh.
