as he neared you, he noticed you talking to a tall figure, though their face wasn’t visible due to the darkness that enveloped where you two were standing. closing in the distance, nevertheless keeping far enough so you wouldn’t spot you, he began realising the said figure was a guy. jaehyun remained nearby, staying within earshot for “safety,” but he knew deep inside it was because he was jealous.
despite feeling like an absolute loser – hanging beside a bunch of people yet somehow looking like a loner – he’d finally felt like his loss of face had paid off when he caught the guy flirting with you.
“i mean, you’re really pretty.” the guy chuckled, a dumb smile growing on his face. “you’re single, right?” it was completely insane how he was so straightforward, not doubting his honour once.
the guy leaned a little closer, like he expected the question to work in his favour. you shifted awkwardly, forcing a polite smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes. “uh… yeah, but-”
“but?” he pressed immediately, grin widening like he’d caught something promising. his shoulder brushed a little too close to yours, and you instinctively leaned back half a step, unmistakably uncomfortable.
your phone buzzed suddenly in your hand, vibrating loudly enough that you felt it rattle against your palm. the screen lit up with a string of notifications from jaehyun. “i need to go.” the words rushed out of your mouth, hoping that it’d save you.
“come on,” he laughed under his breath, taking another step closer. “we should go somewhere quieter. talk a bit, y’know?” he suggested, ready to bring you elsewhere. “it’ll only take a minute.”
jaehyun’s patience snapped.
he’d been telling himself you could handle it yourself, that he was being ridiculous for standing there watching. but with the way the guy continued leaning closer while you kept shifting away made something bitter twist in his chest. before he could talk himself out of it, he pushed away from the wall and walked straight over.

you looked up, surprised that he had just been texting you, and was now right beside you. his hand closed gently around your wrist and tugged you a step toward him, positioning himself between you and the other guy almost without thinking. “let’s go,” he told you simply, like the decision had already been made.
the guy furrowed his brows, clearly caught off guard. “uh… who are you?”
jaehyun barely glanced at him at first, his eyes flicking to your face like he was checking if you were okay before finally turning back. his expression had gone flat, jaw tight under the shifting coloured lights. “it doesn’t matter.”
“we were just talking,” his hands flew up. “she didn’t say there was a problem.” the guy scoffed, evidently annoyed now.

it’s been hours since you went out, and yushi’s still ruminating on having let you go out, overthinking about what you were up to. before you left the house, he stole a glance at your look, and it definitely stirred ideas in his head that he wished he hadn’t contemplated about. you had a full face of makeup on, and although pretty, you didn’t wear a full beat even on dates with yushi, prompting him to begin his never ending deliberation. on top of that, your outfit was a whole other topic. you were dolled up as if on a date, wearing a short skirt that felt way bolder than what you tended to wear. his heart tugged with agitation, worried if you had lied to him.
the nerves took over his body, pushing him to finally ask the question that had been sitting on the tip of his tongue. “...isn’t it a bit much?” his voice hesitated to question you, nervous that it’d erupt an argument, but he couldn’t get it out of his head. “i mean- you look good, yn. but you’re only going to your friend’s house, right?” his fingers fidgeted with the hem of his hoodie, unsure how you would react.
“i just wanted to dress up a little more, yu.” you fixed your hair, looking in the mirror as you ran a hand down it. through the reflection, you could see how he sulked, sitting on the edge of your bed like a dejected kitten. “i’ll be back in a few hours,” you said, walking toward him. “see you later, okay?” you press a soft kiss on his cheek before picking up your keys and waving him goodbye.
as reassuring as you sounded, and as much as yushi believed you, part of him was ill with anxiety and couldn’t recover. he regretted not asking if he could come, afraid of pushing boundaries, but he’d rather have tried than whatever situation he was in now; sitting alone in your shared room, brooding over you and what you were doing while out of his sight.

yushi made an effort and tried to keep his mind off thoughts of you and where you were – keyword: tried – but it was no use. scrolling on his phone occupied his hands, yet his mind was consumed by you. watching a movie was futile too; the idea of a plot went through one ear and out the other, and he could hardly keep his eyes on the screen. there was no place in the house for him to take his mind off you, after all it was your house too. he was completely hopeless. pathetic, even.
his initial uneasiness shifted into envy, because who (other than him) deserved to see you dressed so nice? a sharp twist of bitterness settled in his chest as he quietly clicked his phone on and off, awaiting a text that you were on your way back.
to his desperate demise, the text did not come until three hours later. three whole hours of him pacing around the house, flicking between calling you to come back or letting you enjoy your night, and huffing heavier and heavier as thoughts he couldn’t control swirled in his mind before you sent him a quick “On my way! back” with a pink heart. the moment he caught the notification, a thick, freeing sigh lifted off his chest, finally at ease now that you were coming back to him.
that said, once he saw you walking in with a bright smile still lingering on your face from the night out, the vision of you being happier with someone else wormed its way back into his head.
picking up on how his entire demeanour had a dull, downhearted quality to it, you felt compelled to check on him. “yushi, you okay?” he was sitting on the couch, a blank look in his eyes as he stared toward the floor. it was evident something happened in the time you were gone. “c’mon, tell me, yu.” you cupped his face in your hands, stroking a thumb along his cheek.
in spite of all the turmoil, he shook his head in opposition. “i’m fine.” except the breaking in his voice told you otherwise. you decided to let him off the hook and not press him on it, heading to the shower instead, planning to ask him later when he was hopefully in a better mood.
you barely finished washing up when you opened the door and were face-to-face with yushi who was standing outside the bathroom, eyes wide, clearly aching to say something.
“i’m sorry.” the words spilled out of his mouth like it was beyond his control. “i was sulking because i was upset.” his lip quivered, eyes diverting from the strong gaze it held with yours to the floor. “...because you were going out like that.”
furrowing your brows in confusion, you tipped your head to the side. “what d’you mean by ‘like that?’” he probably meant no harm, but you just couldn’t understand it. the outfit felt fine to you, nothing too far from the usual, what could be so outlandish about this one?
“no! not like that, like that, but your skirt was kinda… short.” his hand scrambled to the back of his head, sheepishly scratching as he spoke. “and your makeup- i mean it looked really pretty, but you don’t even do that on dates with me.” his lips formed a pout, cheeks slightly puffing out.
in that very moment, you realized what had been eating at him. “oh, yushi.” you pulled him into your embrace, to which he melted into right then and there. you planted a playful kiss on his jaw, giggling as he burrowed his head into the crook of your neck. “you’re overthinking too much,” you murmured with a grin, letting your hands rest casually on his back. “no one else’s getting me, you know that, right?”
he silently nodded, keeping his face hidden. “i just don’t want others looking at you while i’m not around.” he drew away from your neck slowly and finally revealed his face, cheeks warm and hands fidgeting at his sides.
“are you… jealous?” despite you having to look up at him to catch his gaze, he suddenly felt like the smaller one. an urge of defence washed over himself, but he couldn’t get a single word out – because it was true. he was stupidly jealous of people that didn’t even exist. “you’re such a big baby, yu.” you cradled his face in your palms, gently pinching his cheeks. “i promise, i’m not seeing anyone but you. there’s no need to be jealous, okay?”
he blinked up down at you, chest still tight from the jumble of feelings, before a small, reluctant smile tugged at his lips. “tch… big baby,” he clicked his tongue, but the way he leaned into your touch said everything words couldn’t. you laughed softly, brushing a loose strand of hair out of his eyes. and just like that, the tension melted, leaving only the two of you, close, warm, and exactly where you were supposed to be.
