You know, the very idea of some eldritch deity, AIs, paranormal beings like spirits and curses and Bloody Mary type things, all deciding to screw with Minecraft players. . . is very silly. Like, as players in a game, of course it shouldn't feel as intimidating as videos and stories make it out to be. It's MINECRAFT, after all. I've been thinking about it, and like. . . in the meta, the reason why it's Minecraft is because that game is popular. People are gonna click on these videos primarily because they're drawn to the game and the stories people can tell with it, and the horror will attract those drawn to that genre like any other.
But what about the in-universe reason?
Why is some guy's ghost in the game? Why are random demons getting caught up in computers rather than coming through a traditional summoning?
Why is a Bloody Mary knockoff chasing its targets who can easily escape by logging out of the server, instead of haunting them in physical life like the good old days?
(Edit: Why is what appears to be the King in Yellow deciding to torture a guy through a server in a digital space rather than through the physical world where it can actually touch the victim?)
And then you remember:
Minecraft is currently one of, if not the, most popular video games on Earth.
Millions of people are spending an awful lot more time these days online, paying attention to digital media rather than physical locations and artifacts.
And it's just a harmless game by itself. Even marketed to naive children, but having a reach of any age and most regions. If something happened "in Minecraft," then it's unserious, even joked about.
This is a space that has a wide population and is regarded as safe to the point where the very idea of being harmed through it by an evil spirit is ridiculous.
You'd expect a ghost or a demon to get you in a graveyard, your sleep, an old doll or foreboding journey.
Not through a space of one's childhood created a mere fifteen years ago. Not through a screen that blocks one's identity.
So. Is it really a dumb idea for an entity to seek out unknowing victims where anyone who could help them wouldn't look?
After all, spooky things happening in Minecraft is a very silly idea.
