Continuing the series with a rainbowcore (scenecore!) Zair. Her name is Lorelai and she made her own kandi bracelets!
Variants under the cut
Realized how badly this species needed representation. This is Aella; she’s very social and friendly but is still getting used to her flashy job as an office executive on Laranth.
I decided to update the biology and appearance of one of my alien species because I
didn’t like it
didn’t originate it
don’t talk to the person who did anymore
felt like the old design didn’t make a lot of sense
can
so here is the new and improved Zair ref sheet. It’s a little bit of a rough draft compared to what will eventually go into the alien handbook, but this is a good idea of what they can look like and how they live.
They are insectoid mammals-- they give live birth, but often to up to 7 or 8 at a time. They smell through their antennae and have small ear holes on the sides of their heads (protected by the fine, fluffy fur). The markings on their backs are not wings but are made to look like them.
Tell me more about Zairs
Zairs are insectoid mammals that live in large, tight-knit communities that generally have nothing to do with blood relations. Zairs believe that it is everyone's responsibility to raise the next generation, and that children are intelligent, thoughtful, and capable of solving problems on their own. This leads to a social structure where blood parents almost never raise their own children, but rather the children are raised communally. The children are taught life skills as soon as possible, and are given opportunities to be independent from a young age so that they might be more self-sufficient in adulthood. Despite this, community is a core value to many Zairs, and it's an unspoken ironclad rule that if someone asks you for help, you help them. No questions asked.
Another key feature about Zairs is that they do not experience (or conceptualize) time in a linear way; they consider lives to flow in a spiral shape, where sometimes one "curls" back into times that one had previously lived through. A weak analogy for this is like returning to an interest every few years and feeling just the same way about it each time. Zairs call these pools of time "lariats" and will often explain themselves by saying, "I'm in a creative lariat right now," or "I'm in a challenging lariat once again." As a result of this, Zair life schedules can be a little more fluid than other species'; it's more common to switch careers, hobbies, and even partners every few years rather than to stick with one for life.
As this implies, Zairs are usually not "monogamous" in the way we think. Zairs will have on-and-off relationships with up to several people at a time, usually alternating based upon what lariat they are in. On Palazair, it's generally understood that one will fall in and out of love with many people over one lifetime, and as a result most Zairs are far more accepting of breakups, strange relationships, and changed feelings. This principle applies to platonic relationships as well, and even to familial ones.
This is more about the planet than the people, but I always like to add that Palazair is home to a uniquely large number of venomous, poisonous, and otherwise dangerous species. This includes flora and fauna alike; Palazair's beautiful rainforests cover a large portion of the available landmass, and these rainforests are known to be too dangerous to traverse without a guide. Having said this, Zairs are of course well aware of which poisonous plants are the tastiest in food, which venomous animals can be safely prepared, and which brightly-colored leaves not to touch with even the tips of their antennae.
Speaking of antennae, Zairs use them to smell and to detect other chemicals in the air! Additionally, their thick furry coats act as a main part of their immune system, helping them to filter out harmful microbes and other contaminants. This is no joke; a shaved Zair could become sick enough to die. In some Zair religions, shaving the fur off one's head is used as a grave penance for sin, exposing the sinner to potential illness until it grows back.
This was a long jumble of sort-of related fun facts, but I hope it sated your curiosity and/or piqued your interest! And thank you for asking!
do ziar antennas give them any special powers?
Hi, thanks for asking!
Zair antennae are mostly their sense of smell; they detect chemicals in the air, which can be quite useful, but it's not quite a "special power."
Lunestrians, on the other hand, use their antennae to communicate telepathically!
