Staying Close

Pairing: Zarkon/Kolivan Rating: T Content Warnings: N/A Word Count: 1449 Summary:  Zarkon and Kolivan are on vacation in the mountains, and the climate is not agreeing with either of them. For different reasons.

“Your Highness! Could you slow down, please?”

At the sound of Kolivan’s voice, Zarkon’s ears twitched, and he looked over his shoulder as his bodyguard came over the crest of the hill. They looked rather frazzled, fur standing on end and fluffed up in anxiety.

“You should be staying close ,” Kolivan reminded him sternly, frowning as they stopped at his side. “I can’t protect you if you’re running off on me!”

In the blade!shiro series, Kolivan has pretty much adopted shiro as his cub. You have also hinted/revealed, if it was a part of this, that Kolivan is/was mated. How would his mate react to Kolivan claiming shiro?

*rubs hands together* A part of the Blade!Shiro series. 

In the beginning of the Great War, they met almost daily,Zarkon drawing Kolivan into the astral plane. They sat in the transparentfield, ruffling Black’s fur and talking about the horrors they both witnessed,Zarkon as the Black Paladin, Kolivan as the leader of the Blade of Marmora.

They embraced and vented. They sought solace in each other’spresence during a time of absolute despair. Horror and destruction sweptthrough the galaxies Voltron once protected, and both were at a loss of how tostop it.

Eventually, Zarkon lacked the strength to call for Kolivan.Later, he lacked the will.

Ten thousand years passed, and Kolivan thought he wouldnever see the astral plane again – until one night, he opened his eyes to seethe transparent purple landscape. Shiro had been talking, sitting at hisconsole and muttering something about Keith and a trip to the space port and atail piercing. So Kolivan had been tempted to think the cub had brought him heresubconsciously, but then he heard the thundering footsteps behind him and thegravelly voice that had once been smooth and warm.

“He’s been here, in this realm,” Zarkon said. “I have felthis presence with my lion.”

Kolivan long stopped bracing himself for Zarkon’s disjointedmanner and turned, meeting his mate with a dark countenance. “Whether youbelieve it, the Black Lion has chosen another. You are no longer its paladin.”

“Lies!” Zarkon roared, his eyes glowing a venomouspurple. “He is nothing but an upstart. A cub. I will tear him apart.”

A furious rage raced through Kolivan’s veins, causing hisclaws to twitch. “You will do no such thing. He is stronger than you know. Hewill not surrender.”

“Everyone is fallible.”

“He is the Black Paladin. They are stubborn beyondcomprehension, as you well know.”

Zarkon’s eyes narrowed; any affection that might havelingered there was gone, replaced by utter disdain. “I see the fight withinhim. You have been fostering it, teaching him, but all your effort will notsave him.”

Kolivan looked away, his bravado failing for a moment,before his fists clenched and trembled. “I will not fail.”

“Hm.” Zarkon spun and began to stride away. “Disengage now,for I will crush him and the Paladins of New. I will take back what isrightfully mine, and you cannot stop me.”

Advice? Concern? After all these years, was that possible? “Itis not I who will stop you.”

Zarkon halted, his back completely straight, eyes never turningback toward Kolivan. Perhaps that was mercy.

“What is his name?” Zarkon asked in a wondering murmur.

Kolivan sucked in a sharp inhale. “Takashi Shirogane. Shiro.”

“Shiro…”

“He reminds me of you, all those years ago. Strong and reservedbut passionate.” The weight of his blade tugged upon Kolivan’s waist and soul,a birthright that Shiro would have inherited along with the crown. “He would havebeen a fair and wise king of Daibazaal.”

“Daibazaal is gone,” Zarkon growled, his threatening tonereturning to his voice. “And soon, so will yourcub and any challenge to my reign.”

“Then why come to me? Why bring me here?” Kolivan demanded,teeth gleaming in the purple light. “To order me to stop training him, so youcan easily dispose of him? Or are you begging me to stop, so you’ll never haveto?”  

Zarkon uncharacteristically remained silent, refusing toturn. He wouldn’t fight a battle he couldn’t win.

“He is my cub,”Kolivan insisted, which makes him yours,too.

Zarkon let out a rumbling growl. “If he is truly mine, thenthere is only one outcome.”

As if Kolivan would allow anything else.  

“Kolivan…? Kolivan?” A hand upon his wrist jerked Kolivanback into his body, and once he blinked, the leader of the Blade found Shiro standing in front of him with a worried but eager expression. “Are-Are you all right? You seemed to go…somewhere.”

Yes, about tenthousand years into the past. Kolivan took a deep breath and calmed hisracing heart. “I am fine. Thank you. Now, explain to me again why Keith is notallowed at the space port without a tail harness.”

Shiro looked skeptical, like he didn’t appreciate Kolivan’sbrush off, but he relented. He’d save his argument for a battle he could win.

Like father, like son.

Have you shared any young and in love Zarkon/Kolivan headcanons with us?

There have bean a few mentions here and there in some of the memes I’ve answered, but here, let me give you some more:

Kolivan never expected to court or be courted by anyone even close to the royal line. So every time Zarkon showed him even the slightest bit of fond attention, he clammed up and tripped over his words.Zarkon was originally drawn by Kolivan’s striking features, but became really determined to court him after watching him lead a strategic fleet and also catching sight of him in hand-to-hand spars in the training fields.

Once they’re together, Kolivan is incredibly physically affectionate. He believes he’ll never quite have the way with words that Zarkon does, but he makes up for it with forehead touches, nuzzling and not-so-accidental brushes.

Zarkon dotes on Kolivan, and it’s never to make a show of the difference in their upbringing, but because he wants Kolivan to know nothing is too good for him. He’s even more insistent on it when he starts leaving the planet with the rest of the Voltron Paladins. Kolivan receives souvenirs and exotic food every time Zarkon returns.

Zarkon is not above sneaking away from the throne to spend time with Kolivan, making the other advisors in the court fret and fuss. Kolivan also fusses “You should not be here” when he sneaks into Kolivan’s military quarters. But never gets much further than that. Kolivan doesn’t really want to argue.

They are very passionate with one another, even more so when their time together is limited by their responsibilities. Becoming a Paladin takes Zarkon away from the planet a lot more than either of them like. It doesn’t stop them from talking about having cubs together and having a future in a peaceful universe. That’s why Zarkon fights so hard – for the future of their family.
