Fencing AU! Because in what other sport would Starscream have a convenient excuse to take a flying leap at someone with a pointy weapon? Reprise is the first fic in the Attaque Composée series, and I don’t know a thing about fencing, but I know some good writing, some delicious Starscream trauma, and some sweet Starscream/Wheeljack when I read it. The translation from canon Autobot/Decepticon wartime interaction to a long-standing space alien robot fencing feud is perfectly done, the Starscream characterization is fucking crisp, Stageflight is best girl who emulates Starscream’s victory screech when she scores points, and in at least one tumblr-only ficlet Wheeljack jokes about getting a mustache. 10/10, would scream again. I need...more...

With an additional plug here for @shibara‘s absolutely gorgeous fanart for this fic, located here: http://shibara.tumblr.com/post/179461125334/aaaah-it-is-finished-this-piece-is-a-lonnng. It feels almost redundant to rec one of Astolat’s fics when they’re so well known, but the fact is her writing is phenomenal, I’m a sucker for competency porn-style/time travel/fix it fic (especially ones where you get to explore people’s reactions to someone who’s just that good), and I do so enjoy works that do Quintessons right. Cyclonus winds up with a second chance to do things right after losing everything, and by god is he going to be good at it.

I just reread this at regular intervals and noodle about Starbladejack to friends constantly. The slow, growing discomfort as Wheeljack struggles to balance his old relationships with his current loyalties when he goes to visit Earth, while OP pushes more than he should, and then the relief and comfort once Wheeljack gets some space to breathe is v cathartic, and I love it.

Why is Galvatron your favorite?

Oh, golly. So, it goes back to my first few years in the fandom, when I was watching through G1 but wasn’t even all the way to Season 3 yet. And I found cute hot fic with Galvatron and Rodimus and Cyclonus (see some of it and I’m sure a lot of broken links on my old pinboard: https://pinboard.in/u:caiaslinks/t:galvatron/). And it was hot and cute and I got hooked. Galvatron and Rodimus and the other TFTM-created characters are curvy and sexy in a way that most G1 characters are not, and I dug the bold colors and the sexy thighs and hell, even Galvatron’s canon is nice and curvy.

At the time I was developing what turned out to be a long-running kink for loyalty and specifically loyal second-tier villains and Cyclonus was the first I really imprinted on. I really like that Cyclonus is powerful and ruthless and terrifying in his own right, but he’s still always going to defer to Galvatron, forever and ever. It hits me in happy places in my id. So, partly Galvatron is my favorite because he’s Cyclonus’ favorite. And because Galvatron, even though he doesn’t treat Cyclonus well most of the time, values that loyalty in the way (G1) Megatron really doesn’t. As much as I love MegaSound and MegaShock, there’s always the bittersweet sense that no matter what the ‘Waves too, Starscream is always the favorite. But Galvatron vaporizes Starscream the first chance he gets. I’m not going to argue that the Galvatron-Cyclonus relationship is a healthy one, but it makes me happy. Even when it’s making me sad.

Things about Galvatron specifically that make me happy: he’s got a real unrestrained joy to him, at his best. His evil brain impulses go straight from his processor to his cannon and it’s just fun to watch (from a distance). On the flipside, I identify with this struggle with chronic pain (migraines for me; I’ve often thought of making a Galvatron icon for Migraine Times) and feel for his struggle with brain damage and the trauma of being killed and enslaved in TFTM.

I've read the whole series twice and dear Cherryh I've READ IT TWICE STOP TELLING ME ABOUT WHAT A PAIDHI IS

Every single book she explains 1) what the paidhi is 2) Jago and Banichi are Assassins ™, and 3) the intricacies of household staff moving messages between people to coordinate everything.  EVERY. SINGLE. BOOK without fail these get a few paragraphs of explanation as though the reader has never heard it before.

meanwhile she has yet to give any explanation at all about how Jago and Bren manage to have sex

I did! I enjoyed most of Sailor V quite a bit. I’m hoping the main manga is just as enjoyable, or that I can at least find a few things here and there to enjoy. I hate when I hate things, I really do.

Unfortunately I got so much more “CRYSTAL IS JUST LIKE THE MANGA” pushbacks on every last drop of criticism I had about the damned thing that even though people I trust assure me it’s not, I can’t completely divorce that feeling. Crystal, alongside the commentary I was getting at that time, tarnished the manga so heavily for me, when I’d already been struggling for years with aggressively passionate manga fan reaction to my anime thoughts and opinions. I’m going to try to the very best of my ability to not carry that with me, but I know it won’t be easy.

Absolutely though, I agree that Sailor V had a million times more personality, emotions, and charm than Crystal. I feel I’m starting off on the best foot I possibly could.
