Hey, I'm making a character that's a werewolf gallivanting around in Ancient Greece. I already know about Lycaon, but you also mentioned that there were other Greek werewolves. Unfortunately, I don't know who they are. Could you tell me more about them, if you know anything?
Oh, there are lots! I have a few posts where I cover more Greek werewolves, too--
First and foremost is the Arcadians, a Greek culture in which werewolf rituals played a large role. Here’s a post on them that I did a while back.
There are some Greek elements to the vrykolakas, as covered in this post.
There is some mention of Greek werewolves in the post on the full moon, as there are some Greek stories in which moonlight is specifically mentioned. It may or may not be related to the werewolf in question, however.
Apollo was also the protector or slayer of wolves, depending on whom you ask. His mother lived in the form of a wolf for a while to hide from Zeus, so it is often said that the idea of him slaying wolves is misinterpreted, and he is instead a protector of wolves. Many ancient Greek cultures (often the more niche ones) actually really respected wolves, unlike the average Western culture since or today.
And of course, Greece is where we get the term “lycanthrope” and “lycanthropy” (though the latter is retroactively created).
For more on Greek werewolf legends, I recommend looking into these various sources (my favorites), as well as looking up the following...
Herodotus, in Histories, makes mention of the Neuri, a people associated with werewolves. I could have sworn I mentioned them in a werewolf fact here once, but apparently I’m just thinking of my dissertation...
Ovid’s Metamorphoses has what is probably the most popular retelling of Lycaon’s tale, it’s worth reading the most popular source.
Pausanias tells various werewolf tales throughout his writings.
Pliny the Elder recounts another tale from Pausanias that may be worth pursuing, and he also tells other werewolf tales.
Essentially, all of these are covered in the sources I mentioned in one of my posts on werewolf sources.
Hope this helps, and thank you for the ask! :D Ancient Greece is almost certainly my favorite culture/time period, so of course I have extensively researched their werewolves.
im astounded that you can just, like, ask for a reliable dnd group and you'll just like. find one. people will just tell you where they are. how did you do that
to be fair I’m as surprised as you are that I just instantly found one
Diggsboy was Zach's old editor because god knows Zach was not doing that shit by himself. Quit after the slur incident, did his own thing. The game is in the fucking works, Zach, and it looks more promising than your future, Diggs tweets in response
Zach blocked Diggsboy on twitter and tweeted about how Diggsboy’s poor work ethics made him hard to work with and was the reason the old videos were always released late. Also Diggsboy was the REAL reason Zach’s cameo voice role on that Nickelodeon show got cancelled cause his girlfriend is a storyboard artist on it.
Aaron can turn into a werewolf but his second shapeshifting ability is turning into the family disappointment
