Huffing the last of my zero-byler-doubt fumes one...last...time.....

if byler doesn’t happen i’m gonna be pretty upset and on top of that ALL OF THE MILEVENS ARE GONNA LAUGH AND RUB IT IN MY FACE.
good thing bylers gonna be canon then 😛😛
Why Robin's Speech In The Tunnel is Not Anti-Byler.
I was in such high spirits after watching volume 1, only to realize so many people are misunderstanding a pro-Byler scene.
I wanted to explain this scene from Robin and Will's perspective because it's a scene written for queer people.
Why does Robin talk to Will?
Let's first understand what Will is going through when Robin talks to him.
Before they all go down the tunnels, Will fist bumps Mike in an attempt to flirt with him. Mike acts shy and walks away.
Will immediately gets engulfed by shame and self-hatred. Something he internalized from all the homophobic bullying he faced as a kid.
Even the lighting in this scene symbolizes that. The dark light on Will’s face after Mike walks away is a stark contrast to when he was flirting with Mike.
Meaning his internalized shame is stopping him from fully being himself (and being with Mike).
Shame is a very scary emotion because it keeps you stuck. Over time, it diminishes your ability to take action and feel good about yourself.
And you can’t date someone as a queer person unless you overcome shame by finding compassion and understanding for your sexuality.
Now Robin notices all of this and decides to talk to Will about her journey of coming to terms with her sexuality.
Who is Tammy Thompson?
Understanding who Tammy was for Robin is crucial to understanding this scene.
Robin was infatuated with Tammy. She believed that only if she would get to be with Tammy can she be loved.
‘That with Tammy, I would finally be able to be myself, all of myself.
This is also obvious from the fact that Robin had a made-up, perfect version of Tammy in her mind.
‘I thought that she sounded like Whitney goddamn Houston.’
When we, as viewers, know from multiple characters that Tammy is actually tone-deaf.
Robin also calls what she wanted to have with Tammy ‘a fantasy life’.
That's a stark contrast to how Will sees Mike.
Will likes Mike for who he is. The qualities Mike already has: his loyalty, leadership, protectiveness, and bravery.
Will wants to date Mike. Whereas Robin thought that being with Tammy would save her from having to face her internalized shame and fear.
Now I want you to imagine this:
Let’s say there is a girl who is a lesbian. We'll call her Amy.
Amy grew up in a very homophobic society. She is bullied in her school.
And even though she never really comes out to anyone, everyone around her picks up on signs that she is not straight. (Like Will).
She internalizes all the hatred and shame around her.
In her high school, Amy has been friends with her classmate for a very long time. She is in love with this girl and wants to ask her out.
But unlike Will, she doesn’t have any support or guidance to help her come to terms with her sexuality (from Robin).
She doesn't know how to process her feelings towards this girl while struggling with internalized shame.
Here's where Robin's experience parallels Amy's:
Instead of addressing her feelings of shame and fear, Amy starts to pour all her attention on the girl she likes.
In the hope that it would make her feelings go away.
Like Robin says:
‘Because there was always this part of me that kind of scared me, you know. But I thought if Tammy loved me, all of me, then, you know, I wouldn't be so scared anymore.'
But Amy doesn't know that she can’t be with the girl she likes until she processes her fear first.
You can’t tie your sexuality to one person.
This is what Robin tells Will,
‘It was always just about me. I was looking for answers in somebody else, but… I had all the answers. I just needed to stop being so goddamn scared. Scared of who I really was.’
This is why volume one focuses entirely on Will connecting with himself on a deeper level.
So is Byler happening?
You are asking: what about the girl Amy likes?
The fact that Amy needs to process her internalized homophobia DOESN'T MEAN the girl she likes doesn't like her back.
We don't know that. Maybe even Amy doesn't know that yet.
Because she can't see the ‘signals’ until she starts to come out of self-hatred and shame.
In this way, Amy’s story is very similar to Will’s.
Robin encouraging Will to accept his sexuality DOESN'T MEAN that she is implying, ‘Will needs to accept himself and forget about Mike’.
NO! She is saying to Will: you need to accept yourself as you are.
So that you can see for yourself whether the person you like, likes you back or not.
What does Robin know about Will and Mike?
I personally believe Robin wouldn't want to assume anything about Mike from just observing them together once.
Yes, she might have noticed Mike's flirtatious behavior as well.
But she doesn’t know him well enough to make any statement about this (nor is this her place to do so, in my opinion).
Her purpose was to help Will accept his sexuality. Which she did.
After that, it's Will’s own journey of telling Mike about his feelings or figuring out if Mike is interested in him or not.
I always knew that when they would portray Byler, they will focus on Will's personal journey of self-acceptance first.
Robin helping Will accept his sexuality is the first step towards Byler, not a rejection of it.
Will wouldn’t have been able to confess his feelings to Mike until he accepted himself fully.
Which we see him doing in the climax of episode 4. So the resistance from his part is gone now.
Finally, why did Will’s film reel begin with Mike?
That too, a memory that is Mike’s favorite memory of them? So something that is mutual between them.
Why is Mike in Will’s film reel when in Robin’s, she only saw herself? That is because Robin’s feelings weren’t reciprocated by Tammy, while Will’s are.
Will doesn’t have to give up on Mike to accept his sexuality.
In fact, accepting what he feels for Mike is a part of his self-acceptance journey as well.
And unlike what Robin felt for Tammy, Will’s feelings for Mike aren't infatuation; it’s love! 💛💙
“Cool. Coool” ahh perfumes 😋
The resolution of the supernatural plot literally lies in Mike, the DM, coming to terms with his demons and this is why Byler has not happened yet. They still need to fight evil. And his acceptance of himself will be central to this.
on my life i will not let byler be queerbait
