Em 2023, o UNAIDS marca o Dia de Zero Discriminação - 1o de março - com o tema “Descriminalizar salva vidas”. O objetivo é mostrar que a criminalização de populações-chave e pessoas vivendo com HIV – infelizmente uma realidade em 134 países – amplia o estigma, a discriminação e as desigualdades estruturais que retiram dessas pessoas a perspectiva de uma vida saudável e produtiva. É por isso que a descriminalização salva vidas e colabora para a meta de acabar com a AIDS como ameaça à saúde pública até 2030. O Brasil é considerado um exemplo mundial ao oferecer o acesso gratuito a serviços de prevenção, diagnóstico e tratamento do HIV e da AIDS no sistema público de saúde. Apesar disso, embora não haja no país a criminalização de pessoas vivendo com HIV, as desigualdades, reforçadas pelo estigma e a discriminação, atuam como elementos determinantes na geração de barreiras sociais que dificultam ou impedem pessoas em maior vulnerabilidade de acessar os serviços de resposta ao HIV. Além disso, as desigualdades aumentam seu impacto negativo sobre as pessoas.
