Look at all this amazing rescued food! I went dumpster diving tonight and rescued a LOAD OF FOOD that is still in perfect condition! I've had so many delicious free meals made of food diverted from waste streams 😊 plenty of protein - frozen so it keeps past its use by date - and veggies - stored properly so they are good for weeks past their best before dates. Storing food properly is one of the biggest things you can do to reduce food waste once food enters your house. Did you know that cow milk can almost double the carbon footprint of a cup of coffee??? That is in spite of the fact that coffee is usually grown far away, transported, processed, packaged, etc. One shot of espresso has an average carbon footprint of about 0.28 kg (assuming Arabica coffee grown in Brazil or Vietnam and exported to the UK). Lattes have a carbon footprint of about 0.55 kg, followed by cappuccinos on 0.41 kg and flat whites on 0.34 kg. That's with locally made cow milk. Drinking your coffee black or with locally made plant based milks can dramatically decrease your coffee carbon footprint. 😁 We choose irish-made oat milk. @flahavans is our fave 🥛 because all their oats are grown in Ireland. #rescuedfood for lunch 😁 this baguette was destined for the bin, the veggies were starting to look a bit sad, and the parsley is from my #balconygarden. It has been challenging trying to eat more bread to avoid it going to waste. I have a history of #disorderedeating, so bread is something that I basically didn't eat for a few years. Adding simple carbohydrates back into my diet is a challenge, especially multiple meals per week. Local as heck honey! I LOVE this concept! @ollysfarm has hives all over the place, including some right here in Dublin City. This jar comes from the rooftops of @teeling_whiskey distillery, which is a short cycle from where I live. One of the coolest things about supporting smaller local businesses is hearing stories like this. There is no faceless corporate, no barrier between me and the person who harvested my food. That's incredibly special. 💚 I had a chat with the man himself, Olly, when he dropped the honey off this morning (he doesn't always hand deliver 😛) and he told me that he had never really intended to grow his honey supply to what it is today. That "new-plastic-free-produce-and-bulk-shop" shop feel!!! 😍 I found myself a couple of blocks away from a spot I had heard about through the #zerowastedublin tag and naturally had to pop out and see it! It's still in its first week so they are still settling in with their products and things. Their vegetables are almost all unpackaged and they have a nice selection of grains and seeds and nuts and legumes in their bulk section. I'm quite excited to see how this one grows! 😁 It's brilliant seeing shops like this opening up everywhere.
