Thoughts on 異世界の沙汰は社畜次第 | The Other World’s Books Depend on the Bean Counter, Episode 6: I Made A Proposal (it was great :D):
There's also a cute new poster of Aresh and Seiichirou available in the March 2026 issue of PASH! (a magazine):
This will be spoilery for the novel and manga, too.
I appreciate the focus on how government excursions like this cost money. Like yes, it is very funny an accountant is involved in managing the fantasyland projects, but trips like this do cost money. All the staff have to be paid, and if they stay at inns or other places that presumably aren't open for free, and also pay for food, housing, cleaning, and feeding the horses, and this has to happen in two trips (to the cursed tree and back), all of that costs money. It is expensive. Sure, staff at the palace also get paid to look after Yua and the other nobility and higher up staff anyway, but this is a separate expense. And that's assuming anything they have for the trip (food, clothes, equipment, horses, carriage, etc.) isn't brand-new and doesn't have to be bought, cleaned, or otherwise serviced beforehand.
alkdjalj Aresh akldjlaj
I love that Seiichirou slightly tilts his head towards Aresh after a moment without removing his head entirely. It's really cute. I also love Seiichirou clutching his abacus alkdjlaj He can't have his phone or an actual calculator, so needs must!
Ist is bebe
Yua's going through so much. I would again highly recommend The Twelve Kingdoms by Fuyumi Ono, with art by Akihiro Yamada, if you'd like a vaguely similarish (but a bit darker) shoujo isekai story (from the female protagonist's perspective) about being thrown into a destined leader role and being really overwhelmed by the harsh realities and rising to the challenge (eventually). The novels are being re-translated, fully, by Seven Seas, and the anime is available for free on Tubi. Magic Knight Rayearth by CLAMP also deals with this, but the manga is shorter and the anime is a mixed bag (it is getting some sort of new reboot/something soon, though!).
Glad Yurius is at least rising to his responsibilities, even if he's still being a jealous, territorial brat about it. He's also quite young and inexperienced, so that's part of the issue.
Seiichirou, I know it's for dramatic demonstration purposes, but could you please not move closer to the cursed tree that has a high chance of murdering you adlkjalj Yes, there's no Tim Curry singing evil songs about it, but please alkjdalj
You're going to give Aresh a heart attack aldkjalj
I also just want to point out that it's very funny the tree is purple because - and I admit to not having academic knowledge of the whys of this - Japan often makes evil things purple, not just including queer-coded villains. Often it's villains related to nature (particularly ones with butterfly symbolism). Aizen Sousuke in Bleach notably was surrounded by purple in his more advanced form. I don't know that it's just a Japan thing/just a queer-coded villain thing, but it's a thing you see in a lot of anime in particular and it's kind of funny (which is interesting when Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling gets a lot of purple, as that's a manhwa thing that the anime kept, given he's the protagonist and not a villain... from a certain point of view). FernGully: The Last Rainforest used a lot of black, gray, brown, sickly orange and green (though that was specifically about pollution) for its cursed tree and villain. What's also notable in Bean is that Aresh has purple eyes, as does Siegvold. So making purple the miasma color is an interesting choice.
Anyway, poor gay evil tree, we knew thee only a little.
The thing with planting flowers to see the advancement of the miasma is roughly a version of what vineyards do: roses are planted around the vineyard as a fence because roses catch disease easily. When the roses start to get sick, the vineyard owners know there's something they need to look at for the grapes. Canary in the coal mine, but plant version!
Ignore what's happening with Seiichirou's eyes and that his head is for some reason larger than Aresh's despite being farther away from the "camera" to focus on how he's sitting on the bed with Aresh, which is quite adorable:
He folds. Like a cat. Given Aresh's panther look, I guess this works lol They match lol
I really liked this shot of Seiichirou:
The sequence here was really good, considering how messy the rest was.
Another good shot of him (really this bit was quite good):
One of my favorite aspects of Seiichirou as a person is how forward-thinking he is. He doesn't work because he wants to get rich, he just does it because he's been brainwashed by capitalism. But he also, when given the opportunity, seeks to encourage productivity while removing problems down the line for future generations. He doesn't teach Yua because she's a dumb girl or territoriality over Aresh: he tries to help her gain more understanding and autonomy over her horrible situation - and life in general - so that she can help herself and make herself safer in future (while endangering others as little as possible). He's not purely doing all this with the miasma out of revenge for being kidnapped or because he, I don't know, wants to hoard the money for himself or hates Yua (though revenge is part of it). He's doing it because it'll be better for everyone in the long run and will avoid future kidnappings: the kingdom can manage the miasma when it comes, hopefully with fewer to no casualties, and they don't need to rely on risky, mythical spells. Once the system is worked out properly, it'll probably also be cheaper. These are all long-term goals that help other people and will be systemic changes in governmental and even religious systems, so that future generations will benefit.
Anyway, barrier reinforcement time XD
Well, actually in the novel and comic it's explained that absorbing bodily fluid from Aresh is a better way to make the magic and whatnot, hence sex (which Seiichirou acknowledges in this scene in the novel), and "pleasure" is unnecessary, but alkdjalj Seiichirou flailing is very funny alkdjlaj Aresh wants to smang, Seiichirou XD (This scene actually has a further cut because there's a (also entirely erased from the manga) novel plotline involving Seiichirou offering to blow Aresh instead, as it seems the most economical way to do all this; Aresh doesn't like doing that)
And Seiichirou (in the anime) is finally acknowledging Aresh's feelings XD He does it a lot earlier in the novel (sort of), but the anime cuts out a lot of his thoughts on things. He's a lot more self-aware in the novel and manga.
Fudanshi voyeur Ist lives XD
Aresh petting Seiichirou XD So cute XD (It looks cuter in the manga)
The conversation is a bit weird in the anime, and it works a bit better in the novel and manga. But well, Aresh doesn't want to wait, he wants to be clear on his feelings (to a degree, anyway).
He's claiming his husband :3 This was really cute. I like Aresh's slightly worried expression (in the manga, it's more intense than worried). He cares, and he wants to be clear on where he and Seiichirou stand. As stated previously (at least in the novel), Seiichirou's past relationships ended because his workaholism took precedence. Aresh isn't aware of that (because they don't talk), but he's being proactive and is at least not letting Seiichirou push things aside. He is committed and refuses to back down, and he's not going to end up like one of Seiichirou's past partners (in part because he can't: Seiichirou needs him to live).
Aresh planning to take advantage of Seiichirou's distractability alkdjlaj At least he's honest XD Despite Aresh's controlling nature and Seiichirou's manipulative side (mostly to his own detriment), they are equals in their own way, which is fun XD
There's a plotline in xxxHolic where a few characters note that some people think that their own sacrifices - done for the benefit of others - should have no other effect. That harming yourself doesn't harm the ones you love, so long as it's done out of like... the greater good or something. As Yuko puts it, "If a person sacrifices himself to save another, then that person should know just what kind of scars that action leaves on the rescued person." (I have the single volume original release version so I'm not sure where it is in the omnibus re-release, but volume 7, which is where the line comes from, is in omnibus 3). I forget where else it was stated, but there's a line from somewhere where a character says, people who de-value themselves think they have no effect on others. That to remove yourself from the situation is a good thing, basically, ignoring that other people notice you and sometimes care about you and miss you when you're gone. Seiichirou here has this problem: he thinks he's too old, too unattractive, too uninteresting, or whatever, for someone young, handsome, powerful, etc., like Aresh to notice and care about. But Aresh does notice him. He does care. He wants to stay. And he refuses to let Seiichirou's issues get in the way of that relationship. And he will in fact acclimate to work around them. He gets on Seiichirou's level. And Seiichirou finds that rather appealing.
I really like the anime armor design for the king's guards, with the little headdress thing. It's nice.
It's not what they look like in the manga. I like the change, honestly. This looks a little more Japanese in a way, with how traditional Japanese armored helmets are designed.
I'm sad that we lose the novel and manga moments of Seiichirou taking note of how Yurius' anger is actually about a continued kidnapping of Yua, and how Seiichirou refuses to allow that to stand:
“They all felt as though having one was advantageous to the kingdom. Although Seiichirou thought that Yurius alone might have had slightly different motivations in mind.
This role binds the woman for her entire life. It should be abolished!” - Light Novel Volume 1, Chapter [Eight] Decided
And in the manga:
"Actually... ...the prince seems to have slightly different motives, but still--he's attempting to put restraints on another person for the rest of her life. I won't let that sort of thing stand." - Manga adaptation Volume 4, Chapter 20
I don't know if it's meant to be pointed that most of the visible nobles and all the ones talking are male. The only female nobles we really meet in the novel (besides Yua, technically) are Norbert's foster mother and Aresh's mother and sister, and Aresh's sister is the only one who does all that much in the narrative (Yurius' mother is mentioned but not shown). Romany has different issues than Japan, but it's still seemingly, for all intents and purposes, a patriarchy. That the male nobles are shouting over Yua's cries of distress, demanding that she's important as an object, essentially, despite her desire to see her family, feels very pointed. And while they try to blame Yua's distress on Seiichirou, Seiichirou correctly points out that Romany kidnapped her in the first place. With the intention of keeping her there forever if it worked, and no ability to send her back.
I really don't like when stories treat rather basic information as too overwhelming and incomprehensible to dumb normies. Like the idea here is that what Ist is saying is too complex, and yes, in a situation like this, maybe it's a lot. But if you just listen, he's not saying anything complicated (I imagine because the episode writers didn't want to make it all up). So this kind of stuff is always really grating. I'm not a physicist or an engineer and I can understand this just fine. Maybe it's something about how unintelligent the nobles are (not surprising) but it doesn't feel that way, really, especially given Seiichirou's carriage thoughts (though part of that was lack of interest and distraction, not lack of understanding).
Seiichirou's husbands have his back XD You love to see it XD And if anyone is being weird about getting involved with palace staff, it's random irritating noble who probably doesn't even live there lol
HUSBAND WANTS PETS FOR BEING GOOD BOI SEIICHIROU! GIVE!
It is hilarious to me that if people want Bean but with furries (and herbalism rather than accounting), My Younger Knight Takes Care of Me in Another World already exists lol But at least we get smirky panther Aresh adlkjalj
Again, Seiichirou wants to give Yua more autonomy. He wants to let her choose her future, not choose for her, or allow others to choose for her. He cares about others a lot, particularly children like Yua who are at the whim of adults.
Despite Yurius you know planning to trap Yua forever, the way he looks bereft and how the sad sting plays when he realizes she wants to leave is a bit, well, sad. The anime translated the manga panels here well:
It's okay Yurius, you're still rich and hot and are inheriting the throne after your father. There will be other women whom you don't have to kidnap into marrying. Yes I know he just marries Yua.
I also don't know how much is just the usual, "playing the ED song because they can't have the ED animation", but I think it is very pointed that the line, "you're my everything" is playing while Yurius is aghast that Yua is rejecting him and Yurius is experiencing some heartbreak of his own. Yua is his everything already. And she's saying no :D She's taking back her autonomy!
Also, I do love how the story focuses on how gifts can be manipulative. Gifts (not always but sometimes) make you feel obligated to the giftor in many cases. The palace gave Yua so much, and so she would feel indebted. It's not quite the intention, but that's how it can work. It's also an abuse tactic (e.g., how can [abuser] be bad, they give me gifts and care for me). Yua is trying to give everything back to avoid the obligation to the palace and Yurius in particular. She wants her future on her own terms.
Aresh walking up to Seiichirou, pushing the paper down, and his little smirk are so cute. He really is adorable.
This is the end of the "main" story in light novel volume 1 but doesn't include Epilogue and After the Epilogue, which covers Seiichirou moving into Aresh's home. Since it's necessary for the rest of the narrative, I assume that'll be in Episode 7. So although Episode 6 did technically conclude Light Novel Volume 1, it's not fully doing so. It'll be interesting to see how they squish LN Volume 2 into the rest of the season... And it'll be interesting to see if we get a new OP/ED next episode!
Overall, it was a pretty great episode, despite the animation issues and cuts (some of the latter are from the manga). Looking forward to Episode 7: I Went On A Temporary Assignment. Siegvolddd time XD
Please also observe this adorable little Seiichirou and Aresh hand towel that is being handed out for free at an official event in Ikebukero on February 13, 2026:
If you haven’t heard, a fourth Bean light novel was announced: 国境治安再構築計画, to be released 23 March 2026. It seems to be set at some point before the epilogue of Light Novel Volume 3, judging by the description: “Research into teleportation magic is progressing through a partnership with Egorova, and it’s been decided that Yua will return home temporarily. Seiichiro is suddenly left with a free day off, and Aresh proposes the promised "retreat to a place with a view of the sea.” For the first time since coming to the other world, Seiichiro and Aresh take a long vacation and head to the main residence of the Indolark family, Aresh’s family home. However, the eldest brother, who will become the next marquis at the main residence, orders them to solve a recent spate of banditry in a village along the border of the territory. Using their respective areas of expertise, the two begin investigating the village and the main residence. What emerges is unclear financial movements, a mysterious bandit organization, and the involvement of a neighboring country. To seize their future, Seiichiro and Aresh team up to solve the case!“
Yen Press is also adapting the light novels into audiobooks. Volume 1 is out already, and Volume 2 releases March 17, 2026, while Volume 3 releases June 9, 2026. There is no current release date for the English translation of volume 4 as a novel or as an audiobook.
Isekai Office Worker: The Other World's Books Depend On The Bean Counter Episode 5 Review - Clingy Black Cat Is Actually A Dog
This episode is basically seeing Aresh be very clingy and possessive of Sei. He may look like a black cat, but he has a dog software installed within him. Also, new characters show up and I’m excited to talk about one of them!
It’s nice to see Sei all nice and fancy for a banquet for once. I bet Aresh is doing his best to suppress himself from wanting to cover Sei from all staring eyes. Anyways, this banquet has its good and bad because best boy Ist shows up alongside Zoltan who is funny and is tired of his sh*t. As someone who did read the original source material, Ist is my favorite because he’s weird, spacey, but is also surprisingly competent at his job (when he needs to be). By the way, Ist and Zoltan are part of the royal sorcery department, meaning that they’re a factor to how Yua and Seiichiro got pulled into this realm.
And yes, the prince Julius is very unlikeable in this part, given that he’s willing to put Seiichiro in danger despite knowing his non-resistance to magicules. Don’t worry, he does get better, but he is very insufferable in this portion of the story. Regardless, I’m still not that fond of him knowing all this. It’s still crazy how Norbert is related to him, despite only sharing the same father.
Speaking of Yua, she does seem annoying too, but it’s out of naiveté and ignorance rather than malice like Julius. I don’t find her as annoying as other people do because of that. She’s still young and it’s not her fault for being coddled by the people around her. She doesn’t know the harsh realities of the world around her, hence why she had to get a reality check. I’m glad that Seiichiro was the one giving her that lecture. He did almost die twice, after all. She has a crush on Aresh, which was why she requested that they switch places. However, she doesn’t know that Julius hates Seiichiro and would leave him for dead if he was in the carriage. So yeah, it was a big-brained move on his part: give Yua a reality check to set her up for some character development and avoid death 2 more times.
I did say that the animation quality was the weakest part of the anime by far and it shows here. Man, the fight scene with the giant beasts was hard to watch. The part where Aresh was protecting Seiichiro was animated like a slideshow. Studio DEEN, you can do better than this!
Ist is voiced by Takaaki Torashima who voiced Son Kihoon from Solo Leveling and Bill from BEASTARS. Zoltan is voiced by Kenta Sasa who voiced the janitor in Hana-Kimi, Lee from Kowloon Generic Romance and Graf Dach’s grandfather in Frieren. Julius is voiced by Tomohiro Yamaguchi who voiced Shirone from Medalist.
Other than that, this was definitely an episode for the ones who wanted to see the leads be affectionate. Say what you want about the anime, but I’m glad they don’t skimp out on showing the affectionate scenes, which is mostly on Aresh’s part. I actually liked the scene where Aresh and Seiichiro were talking about their family and knowing that Sei is all alone in an unknown world, Aresh embraces him, as if he detected his loneliness. What are your thoughts on this episode?
