Oh God I took a peek in the tag and basically all I see is: 'it doesn't matter if they got it annulled!! Rhaegar luvs Lyanna! Not!! Elia!!' Like Rhaegar wouldn't be the first person in Westeros to marry and stay married to someone he didn't love. Besides House Targaryen has a precedent for having multiple wives, they could have just said he revived the practice instead of an annulment. Like do they think their audience won't accept polygamy after already accepting ice zombies, dragons & incest?
This is something I can’t understand. I still would have beenfrustrated with the polygamy too because asoiaf history does not supportRhaegar taking a second wife (it happened twice, and only while Targaryens haddragons, and even then there was a huge war). Having said that, it would havemade more sense than setting Elia aside and disinheriting his two otherchildren, one who he thought was the prince that was promised and the otherwith an important role too because “the dragon has three heads.”
They could have sold the polygamy story, even though it stillhas holes. Instead they chose to go full on “lovesick” prince, willing todo anything to be with Lyanna and it does a disservice to all charactersinvolved, including Rhaegar and Lyanna.
I’mthinking back to Oberyn and how they had him speak of Elia in season 4 and howmuch she loved the children she had with Rhaegar, and how Rhaegar left Elia foranother woman and Oberyn was angry. Youwould expect from this that we’re meant to disapprove but the most recentepisode simply makes it seem that the important part was Rhaegar chose anotherwoman, not the insult to Elia or what it means for her children.
So now that Oberyn is dead nobody cares?
Well I still care, and I’m glad I’m not the only one even if the tagsare full of gross opinions.
And I’m about to reblog a post that covers my feelings on this better than I could
