Hey
So
I'm about to have a crap ton of strawberries
i guess this is turning into daily progress, i get so excited seeing the seeds starting to sprout!
so far we have 1 lil yellow bean, all the cosmos, a few sprouts of Grand Rapids lettuce, and one teeny tiny sprout of Black Seeded Simpson lettuce!
my local library just opened the seed library for the season! ended up picking out chamomile, poppy and radish seeds!
cosmos already sprouting!!
sunflower in august
I started late in the season (planted in the beginning of June due to moving), but thankfully I'm advised I can count on bush beans to still produce before frost! I'm so excited looking at these little beans go.
It was a very windy but beautiful day. I worked but got to play outside in the evening.
Finally got my broccoli in the ground. Proud of myself for growing only two extra seedlings this year. You can spot a few peas peaking out of the dirt in the background.
We had a ton of rain so a lot of things I direct seeded are just now emerging. Spinach, daikon, Dino kale and peas. But I’m so excited for gardening season to begin.
Straw Bale Garden Planted
I took my digital meat thermometer out to the garden and tested the bale temperatures. I was able to plant on 8/27/16 since all were under 105 degrees except for one with a few hotspots; I sowed seeds there since there were no roots to burn. Most of the AeroGarden vegetable transplants have fared poorly-- it’s just been too blazing hot even with a protective summer weight row cover to shade them a bit. Even so, I think I’ll have plenty of cool weather crops planted and growing soon. I also put a trellis up which won’t be for vertical gardening but for supporting layers of polyfilm to shield the plants in winter (season extension). I still need to get some wires up for that purpose. I’ll also have to take and post some photos soon. Establishing a fall garden is no easy task in this zone since summer doesn’t let go easily. There is a touch of fall color in the meadow though-- the dogwood leaves in particular. However, the full spectacle won’t start until October.
